can we talk for a moment about American Idol? I love this show. i always have. i love everything about it. i love the audition round. the Hollywood round. the finals. i love the judges. hell, i even love Ryan Seacrest.

i enjoy seeing who gets through during the auditions and picking early favorites…like FidelbinJesus. and Sundance Head. and backup singer (Melinda?) and the Indian “donny and marie” duo.

i enjoy making fun of the wannabes. Topher squawking his way through footloose. and Janita and her handful of boobs. and Hairdresser Hicks. and the geeky line buddies. and Shakira 2.0

but people like Robert Holmes. remember him? the black dude who thinks he’s elvis. and Nicholas? the one who sang unchained melody? and Mischa something or other? the one with the boobs that hung to the floor? these people are seriously disturbed mentally. There is something wrong with them…i mean other than the fact that they can’t sing and are auditioning for a singing show. i mean, with these guys, it’s beyond delusion. and i feel bad. like i just want to put them out of their misery.

i understand that it makes good tv. it’s funny! but i’m embarrassed for these people. and for American Idol for completely exploiting them.

  1. I completely agree. It makes me sad.

  2. I loved Fidelbin Jesus, too! (he reminds me of my baby brother.) But I think there should be a more careful screening process of applicants to protect the people who are just nuts from exploitation. That’s hard to watch.

  3. I completely agree. Why isn’t anyone stopping them? It’s not funny to make fun of people who are disabled, so why these poor kids aren’t kept out of the televised part of the show is beyond me. I guess they can’t stop them from auditioning, but having all of America laugh at you? Not cool.
I like the geeks – they’re smart enough to use words like novella, but not smart enough to know they aren’t exactly AI material – like that mother-daughter team from last week.

  4. This is part of why I cannot watch the show… yes it is funny, but ultimately it is just sad. I have tried to jump in once they’re into the top 12 or whatever, but honestly I find that the singers I like get bounced early and we’re left with carbon copies of existing performers.

  5. I can’t watch it anymore. I lost interest in AI about two years ago but I still watched the auditions, because they were hilarious. I tuned in last week and it seemed to me that the show was deliberately setting people up to look stupid — people who I don’t think realized they were being set up to look stupid. And that left a really, really bad taste in my mouth.

  6. im telling you the talent pool is shrinking, so to fill 2 hrs, they have to show the hapless yokels

  7. I’m so right there with you girlfriend. I LOVE this show. I love that it’s got such popularity because it’s one of my favorites. And I couldn’t agree with you more…what is wrong with these people? Seriously, who tells them that they can sing? Clearly Mischa’s mom told her…twin WEIRDOS!!!!

  8. I completely agree. Last night I said to my husband that I was a bit pissed off at AI because they were exploiting those who were playing with less than a full deck. Not fair, just sad.

  9. I felt sorry for the guy whose wife left him so she “could keep screwing around” and was going on American Idol, so when she wanted him back after he made it big and all, he could totally tell her where to go, but then he sucked and his wife could lord that over him instead. Poor Bugger. The editors could have left that out – but they opened the door for him to be ridiculed by the person who hurt him the most.

  10. I’m with you. It’s just plain painful to watch such humiliation. I can’t help but think they must not have a friend in the world–someone who’d stop them from doing something so embarrassing.

  11. They are completely exploiting those people. It makes me uncomfortable. I did laugh at the boobs-down-to-the-floor, gold-shirted blonde, though…and at her mother…and at the two of them together….But, I did NOT laugh when Simon and Paula and Randy laughed at the guy they said looked “a little odd” and like a “bush monkey” — that was just cruel.

  12. You’re not the first person to post about this very subject. I am also an AI fan…have been since season 1! There is something wrong w/ these people…and they are exploiting them. But…it brings them good ratings, what can I say. And..I’ll still be watching, so I guess I can’t get too pissed about it. ha!

  13. OMG! My hubbie and I only watch the auditioning part, it’s so hilarious!! Did you see the girl that was giving them the speech last night, and they were playing “soap” music like she was auditioning for a role or something. Man, there are some weirdos out there, but so far…NY is the winner for weirdos.

And I was totally drooling over that 16 hottie who was adopted by an Asian lady, and he has a great voice too. I thought Paula was going to maul him or something.
