March 5 12

This is what I did on Saturday night:

I watched Catch and Release.

For the 47th time.

Yes I did.

I’m not sure if you are familiar with this one, folks, since it scored a whopping 21% fresh on the tomato-meter, which, if my math is correct, means that 79% of the people who watched the movie thought that it was shitty. And, if we are being honest, they are probably pretty accurate in their assessment.

Plot-wise, the movie is…bizarre at best. A fiance dies, so instead of a wedding, there’s a funeral…and then a fairly predictable things-are-not-as-they-seem investigation into said dead fiance follows. And then there’s a lovely little romance in there that makes absolutely no sense but NO MATTER HOW MUCH I TRY TO HATE IT I CANNOT STOP LIKING IT.

What dead fiance? What best friend?

Also, don’t forget the bathrobed Kevin Smith and his tea-box inspired inspirational quotes.

It’s…not a good movie.

AND YET.

If it’s on, I cannot turn away.

It’s like how I totally pretend that I hate Whitney but when it’s on in the background, I simply can’t look away.

The force is strong with that horrible show.

There are also

(hangs head in shame)

others.

The Wedding Planner.

She’s All That.

Save The Last Dance.

Soapdish.

Never Been Kissed.

13 Going on 30.

Maid in Manhattan.

A Walk To Remember. (Nicholas mothereffing Sparks.)(WHAT?)

The Cutting Edge.

Center Stage.

10 Things I Hate About You.

A Cinderella Story. (Yes. The one with Hilary Duff.) (Yes. THAT Hilary Duff.)

The Lake House. (FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.) (I CAN’T BELIEVE I AM ADMITTING TO THIS.)

And now I will need to wash my eyes out and sit down and watch, um, Casablanca or something.

Just after I watch this week’s Whitney.

  1. Um, me too. To pretty much all of those. *stands beside you and also hangs head in shame*

  2. This is one of those movies I first watched because I had acquired the soundtrack first. Great soundtrack so the movie should follow, no? No. Another in that category was Once, though it completely lived up to the soundtrack. Sometimes you can judge a movie by its soundrtrack. Sometimes you can’t.

Comment by Tamara on March 5, 2012
  3. And by soundrtrack I mean soundtrack. 🙂

Comment by Tamara on March 5, 2012
  4. YES. good soundtracks should be good movies. AGREED.

  5. Confession: I LOVE Catch & Release. So much so that I own it, and I do not own a lot of movies.

Comment by Daisy on March 5, 2012
  6. I can’t explain my love for it…like, at all. It’s so ridiculous…but I can’t help loving it.

Comment by ali on March 5, 2012
  7. The Cutting Edge is one of mine too – “Toe picks!”

    Also,
    Pretty Woman
    Braveheart

  8. Are you kidding! Timothy Oliphant is the reason I have watched this movie about a bazillion times, that and Jennifer Garner! No shame here, I love this movie!

Comment by Gabriella on March 5, 2012
  9. I love Catch & Release! I don’t know why. It’s not good. But it’s just so good! I have it permanently saved on the DVR. YES I DO.

Oh man, The Lake House. WHAT IS IT ABOUT THAT MOVIE? It’s so effing ridiculous and yet? LOVE.

Comment by Kristabella on March 5, 2012
  10. This is why we are friends 😉

I don’t know anyone else who can tolerate The Lake House.

  11. I actually love that movie.. it reminds me of the Griffin and Sabine stories by Nick Bantock. Beautiful art in those.

  12. Okay – I can’t speak for the other ones, but the reason you like Soapdish because it is AWESOME.

Comment by Jessica on March 5, 2012
  13. I get mocked so much for my love of Soapdish…but it’s just so hilariously bad that it’s good, yanno?

Comment by alimartell on March 5, 2012
  14. I’d make fun of you for the Lake House, but since I love the rest of them…

Comment by Issa on March 5, 2012
  15. Hmmm…I feel like I should admit a few myself. Valentine’s Day and it’s sequel-ish thing, New Years Eve. Which hi, I love so much that I not only went and saw it three times in the theater, I’ve already pre-bought it from Amazon.

Also, Sex and the City. Yeah. Both movies.

Comment by Issa on March 5, 2012
  16. i know nothing about catch and release but after seeing that picture (and staring at it for a while) i’m gunna git me a copy stat!

  17. Laughing my ever-loving butt off. Catch and Release…yep watched it too. The Wedding Planner – own it. Never Been Kissed – watch it. 13 Going on 30 – own it. Maid in Manhattan – own it. The Cutting Edge – “toe pick!” Center Stage – own it. The Lake House – own it. Really, watching these on TV is one thing…admitting I own them, that’s a whole other problem. 😉
I completely forgot about Soapdish – haven’t seen it in years.

Comment by Amanda on March 5, 2012
  18. We obviously need to have a movie night.

Comment by RunANC on March 5, 2012
  19. I’ve never even heard of this movie and I won’t judge you too harshly but I absolutely will not go to the movies with you unless I’m inebriated or in need of a nap.

Comment by Jessica Gottlieb on March 5, 2012
  20. Wedding Planner for me – two actors I don’t enjoy and yet I can’t turn it off. Ridiculous. Perhaps there’s a self-help group to join.

Comment by Kat on March 5, 2012
  21. I KNEW there was a real we were such good friends! That and you have Golden Girls and Full House on in your house on repeat.

Comment by Sam (temptingsam) on March 5, 2012
  22. THE LAKE HOUSE! I KNOW! SO BAD! And yet… Can’t. Stop. Watching.

I actually own it. How about I mail it to you so I never have to see it again, but you can watch it all you want, then pass it on to another closet fan.

Also: 10 Things I Hate About You. I’m pretty sure I could recite that whole movie. Um, not the life accomplishment I’m most proud of, but there you go.

Comment by Laura B. on March 5, 2012
  23. …but I LOVE that movie. What’s not to love?! Portland, groovy housemates who quote Celestial Seasonings, ski mountain living…it actually makes me home sick. EVery. Time. I. Watch. It. xo

Need to add: Elizabethtown (!), same effect. Just Married, Just Friends, A Lot Like Love & Definitely, Maybe. 🙂

  24. I’ve seen most of the movies you list and I choose to stand up tall, completely refusing to be shameful about it.

Why? Because while these movies may not be voted “movie of the year” they make me happy. I’ve seen several of them more than once (and some more times than I can count), and I look forward to watching them again.

Be proud of what makes you happy.

Comment by Hallie on March 6, 2012
  25. Love almost all of those.

A few you forgot Newsies and A Knights Tale. I love Newsies so much not only can I recite the entire movie and sing all the songs, so can my younger brother (29) and both my kids (boy and girl). Both my kids have the soundtrack on their ipod/iphone.

Comment by misty on March 6, 2012
  26. I haven’t seen it. I KNOW. I’m going to find a way to watch it asap. Today, possibly. Or tomorrow.

Also, I adore 13 Going on 30 and Save the Last Dance. I think we should have a movie watching marathon in NY.

Comment by Meghan on March 6, 2012
  27. See. I totally assumed that I was the only person on earth who HAD seen it. Hee!

    YES. movie marathon. LOVE.

Comment by ali on March 6, 2012
  28. Besides Soapdish, I laughed during the whole list, while nodding my head like a moron. 13 Going On 30? yeah, my mother & I use to watch it EVERY weekend…and try to learn the Thriller dance. This may seem ok to some, but neither of us are dancers. 10 Things is one of my all time favorite movies. And now, I must go find a copy of Catch & Release because it’s been too long.

Comment by Spring Blankenshhip on March 6, 2012
  29. Oh wait, I just remembered something; I wanted to name my daughter Gray after Jennifer Garner’s character in the movie…yeah, I have no pride. (Sadly, my husband refused, he’s such a loser)

Comment by Spring Blankenshhip on March 6, 2012
  30. You named just about all of my favorite movies. And I am not ashamed! Especially !0 Things…I could probably quote it all the way through right now.

Comment by Chris on March 6, 2012
  31. Wait…did you just dive into my secret movie stash? My coveted movie stash? The one that my embarrassed husband hides in the closed-door part of his movie cabinet?

    Center Stage – LOVE
Catch & Release – holy shnikies, I’m not the only one?

Wait – what about 27 Dresses? i forced my husband to buy that for me to ease my sprained ankle pain…I’ve watched it SO much. (Really any Heigl movie will do – i also adore The Ugly Truth and Life as We Know It).

Of course, I also watch the Dr. Quinn series over and over. oops, was that out loud? (in my defense I counter sappy westerns w/ things like Deadwood & Hell on Wheels)

I definitely have a stash of these – my husband just doesn’t let them mingle with HIS movies (of which he has 400, probably 50% of which are horrible, crappy or horror/grotesque).

And now I’ve realized that I don’t actually have a copy of Center Stage on hand…my disc got worn out and I haven’t replaced it…must buy.

(P.S. the one movie that I watch so many times I’ve burned out one VHS tape and one DVD is….Galaxy Quest. Being a total Geek and Trekkie…well, I DIE. Every time. M-Guy.)
