You’d think that the hardest part about moving to a new country at the ripe-young age of 18 would be leaving your family and friends behind for more northern pastures. But alas, no, this was not the case. The hardest thing for me was giving up my creature comforts. You may think Canada is just an extension of the United States, but you would be wrong. It’s actually, legitimately a whole other country with its own currency, its own government, and its own ideas of what breakfast should look like. And in Canada, breakfast does not include Apple Jacks. I, at 18, thought this to pretty much be the very worst thing to ever happen, because Apple Jacks were a staple in my eating repertoire.
When family members came to visit, I made sure they weren’t crossing over the border OR the threshold to Casa de Martell without at least two boxes of Apple Jacks. When my grandparents visited me right after I gave birth to my son, they brought me 17 boxes. SEVENTEEN. And I will tell you something…it was the best baby gift I ever got.
People may try to tell you that there are good alternatives to Apple Jacks…some that look the same, some that might taste the same. They are almost all delicious, but there is NOTHING in this world like the “A is for Apple, J is for Jacks…”
Luckily for me, Apple Jacks are not my kids’ favorite. They are bigger fans of the more colorful Froot Loops and the more exciting Corn Pops and the louder Rice Krispies. Because of this, I don’t have to hide my precious Apple Jacks.
What I DO have to hide, though, are the ridiculously delicious Apple Jacks Cereal cookies I have a tendency to make more than I probably should.
