Some days just start out badly and you just know that even before you taste your first sip of coffee, that this very cup of coffee would likely be the day’s brightest spot, so you sip with care—slowly savoring it because the shitstorm is coming. I mean, sure, there are three little letters that could have something to do with it, but some days are just harder than others.
Some days the kids are more trying than usual—beginning with a lunchbox that didn’t make it into the kitchen, one of the only tasks on your children’s to-do lists that doesn’t involve personal hygiene.
Some days you allow your daughter to color part of her hair auburn and somehow manage to get red dye on not one but two white rugs.
Some days there is traffic during a snowstorm, and work crap, and spouse crap, and finance crap, and moments of not your best in the viewing gallery at the community swimming pool.
Some days you just realize that you need A PERSON and you don’t have one.
But then, at some point you sit down on the couch with an evening tea and press play on the dvr to watch the recording of the ladies free skate program. And your daughter Isabella, the skater, sits down next to you and has her I’M IN DISNEYLAND face while she watches the spins and turns and jumps and lutzes and axels.
“She is so beautiful, Mama. And her dress is lovely. And this is just wonderful,” she says, with stars in her eyes.
“Well, yeah, she’s pretty good. Almost as good as Isabella,” says Isabella’s brother, looking up from his book.
Take that, Adelina Sotnikova.
And take that, DAY.
