i bought my ipod on ebay. yes, yes, i knew the risks. but $100 for 20gb was too hard to pass up. My ipod arrived, in pretty great condition. it looked brand new, save for a few scratches on the screen and a shitload of crappy music.

one day, after several months of using my pretty perfect ipod, it wouldn’t turn on. blast! i tried everything. plugging it into the computer. the car. turning it off. (did you know you could turn an ipod off? i didn’t! i guess that’s what happens when you buy a used one. you don’t learn how to properly use it…) turning it back on. nothing.

finally, after a simple “hard reboot” (whatever the heck that is), she was working again. huzzah. i wasn’t going to have to replace my ipod for a fancy new 80gb video….boy, did i ever luck out… he.

well, this morning, i got in the car and plugged her in. deja vu, it was. the girl, she wouldn’t turn on. i drove two blocks in silence, kicking myself for not asking for a new ipod for Chrismukah (like the husband did…although he asked for an 8gb nano, which i can’t understand. for the EXACT SAME PRICE he could have gotten a 40gb video. yes, i realize it’s smaller and lighter and easier to jog with. but it’s 32 more gigs, for the same price.), when behold, she turned on.

i got through two songs and then poof! she stalled. i couldn’t press a single button. i can’t turn it off. i can’t pull up the menu. i can’t change the song. i can’t do anything. it’s on, it says it’s playing a song. but it’s doing nothing. nothing at all. except the screen, she’s a-glowing.

help! what’s wrong with her? save my ipod, please.

Her Bad Auction

so, the raffle/auction is over. over $3,000 was raised for MD Canada!!!! Amazing. Kristen, Julie and Sandra (and all of the other people involved) truly are amazing people!

of course, because i never win anything, i didn’t win. i was really hoping to win a new blog design from the lovely Karen RaniΓƒβ€šΓ‚Β and Izzy. i KNOW what you’re thinking, “Ali, your blog is beautiful, why do you need a new design?!” well, i’ll tell you. it’s NOT for this site, it’s for another site. a blanket site. it’s still a little bit in the hush hush stages, but i thought a nice site design would get it off the ground…

(anyone want to donate their services? or just some help? i’m slightly html literate, and could probably do it on my own, with the right guidance! and i could even provide a free personalized fleece blanket in return??? anyone? anyone?)

  1. My brother in law told me that ipods are actually only made to last a year or so – to make you buy a new one!

  2. I have no advice. My iPod usually stalls in the middle of a song with the backlight still blazing, and just stays until the battery runs itself out. But apparently that’s common because if you google something like “unfreeze iPod”, there are many many many sites dealing with the solution.
I had a 20G from BestBuy that froze multiple times, until I brought it back and got a 30G movie iPod! It’s wonderful except that still, I only listen to music. I have no movies. And it still freezes from time to time. I think that’s just part of owning an one.

  3. Mine has frozen once or twice. All you need to do is hold down the menu and select buttons together for about 6 seconds until the apple pops up on the screen.

And don’t buy the bigger ones if you want to jog with them at all, they have real hard drives and don’t hold up well under that much jarring.

    Good luck!

  4. Yeah, iPods are made to die. I thought your blankets were LOVELY and I can’t wait to see your new hush hush site!
You should have had my oldest daughter enter for you – she wins things ALL THE TIME. Seriously, she won nearly 20 contests/raffles last year. SHe’s freaky like that.

  5. Ditto on the incredible dying iPod battery. I read that the normal life span of an iPod battery is about two years. Just one of those things Apple doesn’t tell you before you purchase one.

  6. The batteries, check the batteries. The older ones have crap for batteries.

  7. Oh that stinks. I don’t have an iPod yet but it’s on my list. I doubt I’ll get it. My wife has the Nano and it hasn’t caused any trouble…yet.

  8. My ipod dies all the time, but it tells me it has no battery power first. It’s a mini, I bought it used on ebay too. I want a new one. But you CAN just get a new battery from Apple for $59.

I asked for a nano too, b/c I didn’t know the video ones were the same price… Hmm. Wonder what I should do. I don’t know that I’d watch videos on it ever. ANd the nanos are pretty!

  9. I would suggest using some specifc Google searches for the iPod problem. Really it depends on what generation it is (you can use Google to find this out as well). One thing that may help is to reformat the entire iPod (I think the Apple website has some info on how to do this) and reload the music… but don’t do it if a) you don’t have all the music on your PC or b) you have USB 1.1 only… it’ll take ages to reload.

    You can try this too:

Oh, and if you’re looking for HTML help, I can certainly give you a hand, as well as some JS if you need it. Just email me.

  11. my ipod is a few months old directly from the apple store in the mall and having trouble ghetting it to charge. Benefit is that they will replace it within a year if there is a problem…no ebay for ipod for me!~

  18. Try the reset. Hit Apple’s site and they’ll walk you through it. I’ve had mine for two years and never a problem (currently knocking on wood).
