April 10 08

i need this t-shirt. yes, i’m one of those.  one of those people who likes to tell you that she’s been listening/watching/wearing something before it was popular. Entourage. Heroes. Doc Martens. Guitar Hero.  Abercrombie and Fitch (i shopped there in high school – in the 90s when BIG BIG sweaters were in style and they hadn’t yet realized that using half-naked men was a good marketing tactic) my love for Ryan Gosling (hello? i’ve loved him since he was superdork on The Mickey Mouse Club…and i even watched him on Breaker High. *hangs head in shame*) and don’t even get me started on the music. i was there. early.

about a year ago the following conversation transpired:

friend: “i am obsessed with facebook.”

me: “oh, me too. it’s really taken off recently, eh?” (note how well i can use the word “eh” now. correctly and everything. awe.some.)

friend: “really. it wasn’t crazy before?”

me: “well…i’ve been on it forever. like, since september 2006 or something.”

husband: “oh, Ali practically invented facebook. she was the first person to join. while you were still in diapers she was already on facebook.”

but i’m also quick to admit to the things that i’m way behind the times on. I didn’t start watching LOST until last summer (and then proceeded to plow through the entire 3 seasons in merely a few weeks. it was THAT good.) I hesitated for an entire season before slipping into my first pair of skinny jeans. ipod. it took me forever to finally cave and get one (and now i can’t go back) Big Brother. cell phones…mine is a fossil. no blackberry. no internet. nothing. all it does is dial numbers. imagine!

and now, my three newest loves obsessions are things i was late to jump on the bandwagon.

Dance Dance Revolution

and

Arrested Development

and

Twitter

i am getting nothing done in my life right now because of these three things. mind you, i’m awful at DDR, i can’t get past that first song where they actually say out-loud, left, left, right, right, front, back, front. etc. i’m too scared to actually dance to a REAL song. but still, obsessed. and arrested development? beyond. brilliant. i can’t believe this show was only on the air for 3 seasons. i demand that it returns. demand. and twitter? what’s there to say about twitter. it’s FANTASTIC.

what were you ahead of the curve to love? what were you behind the time to love? what are you obsessed with these days???

-
  1. *I* watched the Heroes premiere online, the Thursday BEFORE it aired on NBC (they had a promotional thing with Yahoo or something, and you could watch the episode early) so I was there before you. 😉

Gmail… while not first, my “welcome to gmail” email is dated June 14, 2004, which in most circles is pretty early.

Late to the party? Never. I’m cutting edge, y’all.

  3. I had to delurk for this one 🙂

First, I’ve been debating buying my boyfriend that t-shirt for months now – he’s totally Mr. Oh, I Was Totally Listening To That Really Obscure Band That Just Hit The Mainstream Way Back in 1999.

I also joined Gmail in 2004 – September, maybe?

AND… (here it is, my trump card)… I joined Facebook in 2004! I had just graduated from the University of Michigan, and back then you could only join Facebook if you had an email associated with a particular university that had been invited to be a part of Facebook… I think at the time University of Michigan got added, there were only like 20 Universities allowed to use it. We were all like, WTH is this “Facebook” business?? It took a couple years for Facebook to stop requiring that you be a part of an organization that they had invited or whatever. I am a Facebook pioneer, baby 😉

  4. Oh.my.gosh! I had completely forgotten about Breaker High! haha

I’d say I was early to instant messaging. I me my Canadian in a chatroom and that was right before things like PowWow and Babble came out and people were like OMIGOSH I can see when you’re typing and I don’t even have to hit refresh! lol My friend pointed out yesterday that my yahoo profile says last updated feb. of 1997.

Something I was very late on and am currently obsessed with is Etsy.com. It totally caters to my need to spend money on little unnecessary things!

  5. ‘see kai run’ one thing that i was into awhile ago but i see them a lot now on kids sites. they are the cutest shoes for babies and toddlers.

what did i jump on the bandwagon to? i would have to say ben folds. i know he has been around a long time but i am just now getting into the music and love it!

have loved loved loved Arrested Development since it started. i can’t believe they took such a genius show off tv. thank god for dvd box sets! george michael and gob rock.

  6. I didn’t start Lost until this past Xmas but literally watched all 3 seasons over the Xmas holidays. It wasn’t the most physically active Xmas break I’ve ever had. 😉

I just bought the 1st season of Arrested Development. Omg addicted! What? It isn’t still on the air?? I did not know this – dammit! I was looking forward to seasons and seasons of AD.

Right now I have this weird obsession with Jon & Kate Plus 8.

I know NOTHING of this Twitter thing… I must check this out I guess. lol

  8. I watched Arrested Dev. when it was on air – they should have sold that show to HBO, it would probably still be on. It’s way to smart a humour for the average person. There are no truly funny sitcoms on TV right now. Re: everything else, I’m usually last – especially anything technical.

  9. I introduced the song “You spin me right dound like a record” to North America in the 80s – seriously! I brought the 45 home from a trip to London England and insisted it be played at my grade nine high school dance!

  12. I came to The Office pretty early and then it exploded and I pouted because I WAS A PAM AND JIM FAN BEFORE ANYONE ELSE.

I also found One Tree Hill very early but then no one else found it that wasn’t still in high school so perhaps I shouldn’t admit that?

But I didn’t get an iPod until this last December. Little behind the curve on that one.

But lol, I think I’m a partial pioneer of im’ing too…wayyyyyyyy back in high school when it was brand new. Let’s not discuss when that was. And I guess I could say I’m a little late to the game when it comes to blogging, but…it sure is fun! 🙂

  21. OMG. Love Arrested Development. We *just* started watching it…still on the first season. So very funny.

Also really love the show Dirt, with Courtney Cox Arquette. Not sure why that show never did well.

Do you watch Tell Me You Love Me and Weeds? Totally brilliant shows, too.

I am always behind on the social media things. Facebook and twitter had been around for like a million years before I heard of them.

I was behind the times on Weeds. I am still a season behind, but that is because I am too cheap to get Showtime.

i always get conflicted with unknown bands that i know make it big…on one hand, yay for musicians i like getting success & recognition…but on the other hand, ugh i could REALLY do without every frat boy and his mom listening to MY music!! haha 🙂

what else…i saw napoleon dynamite the first week it came out in theaters, months before everyone was quoting it…no one believed me that it was funny!!

  25. Hilarious post, I am so glad I am not the only geek around! I loved Barenaked Ladies, long before they were mainstream. Way back in ’92 a boy gave me a cassette and I fell in love, but only with the band, not the boy.
I also was the girl who started to opaque tights fad in my small town;) Picked them up in Europe on a school trip. I also started a lot of fads that no one else ever picked up on. I would see cool fashions or hair styles on holidays or in magazines and then be the only one to ever wear them. I was a geek!

  29. I’m usually late with most everything. The biggest one was Harry Potter.

I’m usually one of the firsts with TV shows – Big Brother (first US season SUCKED and yet I stuck with it), Friends, Grey’s Anatomy.

I watched the British version of The Office, so I guess that counts too.
