Tomorrow is Family Day in Ontario.

i’m sorry…what? Family Day? I was under the impression that Saturday and Sunday were family days. Days of jam-packed family time. of food shopping. and birthday parties.  and more birthday parties. and swimming lessons. and playdates. and skating lessons. or baking cookies. and reading stories. and playing Wii. and playing Barbie. and getting my nails done by my 6-year-old. and the kids staying up late. and not having school. and them being bored to tears. and not being able to agree on anything. of pulling Isabella AND the toilet brush out of the toilet. of Chuck E. Cheese excursions. and the Science Centre. and Tim Horton’s breakfasts.

of waking up a sleeping child to make it to a birthday party (yes, any of you who have had to do this know how fun it is…)

of making cakes that look like castles

(why yes, Virginia, that is my daughter CRYING about the cake…this is what happens when you wake a sleeping child…see above photo. and that IS cake batter on Josh’s nose. because YES i do let them like the spatula. sue me.)

now…they are giving us an extra day this week. don’t get me wrong…i’m all for days off. not having to go to work in the morning is a blessed thing. not having to get up at the butt-crack off dawn and race to get out of the house while there are outfits to pick out and asses to wipe and Tigger and Pooh movies to put on that all slow. me. down. and make me late every. single. day. of the week.

but, i ask you, why couldn’t they give me a day off when my kids have to go to school? because THAT would be the best family day ever. a day where the husband and i could sleep until noon. and watch things that are pvr’ed. and lounge in my pajamas. and eat a meal without having to get someone a drink.

because, i swear, i feel like i am a DRINK SERVANT.

all. day. long.

“i want chocolate milk.”

“i’m thirsty”

“can i have a drink? cold water with ice. in a glass.”

“i need juice!”

“i don’t want apple juice. i want orange juice”

“not that cup. i need my Joshua mug!”

“i want chocolate milk”

it never fucking ends with the drinks. tell me i’m not alone. please. or maybe my kids are just ridiculous drinkers. camels.

or why couldn’t they make this day in the summer…when i can just throw them outside without having to spend 45 minutes bundling them up…only to have them spend 45 seconds outside and beg to come back in because they are too cold (they are mine. through and through). because this:

is about 832 times better than this:

now, if you’ll excuse me. i have to get Isabella in bed. pick up Emily from her playdate and clean the crap out of my house. because Fry and Tova are coming over and we are going to cook us some Thai food. and then i’m going to have some wine a beer. or 4. because i am classy. and i could really use one. or 4. because tomorrow i get to wake up and do this all over again.

  1. I know I’ve bitched about this before, but because I work for the federal government, I don’t get the day off. My kids and husband will be celebrating family day – without me! (Whine!)

  3. There’s father’s day, mother’s day and now family day and none of them are particularly a day of rest! Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE my family and would do anything for them but sometimes (especially after a trying weekend) my coffee at work is much more enjoyable than it is on a Sat. or Sun. morning!
Gawd I can’t wait for warmer weather!!!

  6. Love the cake!! I’ll vote for any politician who wants to start a “Mom and Dad get to sleep in and have one day to themselves Day” or wait, isn’t that called a vacation without the kids??? Hmmm. Need one of those then! Oh, and my son is made up of 98% juice and 2% food.

  7. Heehee!
Being a displaced Albertan, I grew up with Family Day. Yeah, we thought of it first. And here’s what we did in our town: sleigh rides, snowshoeing, bannock over an open fire, skating, etc. Good COLD-ass times.

  8. At the risk of sounding ungrateful. My company had been giving us “heritage day” off for the last 8 years, because we have an office in Alberta that had family day and we needed a companion holiday. I loved it every year. The kids were at school/care and the malls were empty cause everyone else was working. WAAAAAA I lost my real holiday day. I will enjoy Family day this year, but not as much as I did last year :(

  12. Don’t hate on me, but I actually get to enjoy it… I do home childcare and I’m taking it as a stat – my own kids, but ONLY MY KIDS! :) :) :) Sure, I’d love a sleep-in PJ day too, but I’m just happy it’s ONLY MY KIDS with me tomorrow! LOL…. it was a looooooong week last week. Can ya tell?

    PS. HILARIOUS post!

  15. I AM THE DRINK SERVANT.

    You are SO not alone.

I did not realize that Ontario also had Family Day (Alberta does too).

Us BC folks get the short end of the stick. Except that we live in the best province.

  16. My fiance actually has to work today- no other day off in lieu and no time and a half or double time- it sucks! I’m also very jealous at your castle cake pan- I have been dying to buy one just like it since I collect fancy cake pans (and actually use them too!)

  17. The drink servant thing has gotten so bad in our house that it requires two adults to properly hydrate my daughter, so no, you’re not alone.

As for the day off thing… I’m probably going to get poo-pooed (based on the comments) but uh, if your kids are at school, then teachers don’t get the day to spend with their spouses watching the PVR in their pajamas until noon. {shrug} Sorry being, like, logical or something. ;)

As for a day where kids are in school but parents aren’t? Try a “work from home” day when the workload is light, or take a vacation day without them.

  23. I am a drink servant with just the one child. I am convinced my life would be easier if I could have a water fountain somehow installed on her body. Note to self: up the birth control dosage. Also, I’m really hoping that the camel photo is another one of those strange gemstone of a photos you encounter at work. haha.

EVER! Bulk barn pan? Please tell me!!!
I am the drink & food servant too. My boys are ALWAYS hungry – of course never at the same time…I fill up 2 large sippy cups in the morning & when they tell me they’re thirsty (again) I tell them to find their cup.

  30. I hear you on the drinks.
And, we could have 16 different beverages in the fridge, but if we don’t have rootbeer (yes, I do let my child have pop occassionally) and the appropriate Captain Jack Sparrow cup then Matt will cry for ages.
As well, there’s a whole thing with names. Like, you can’t say Five Alive, you need to say Five Alive Arrive. And apple juice is appley juice, etc etc.
    And the cups…
    And I only have 1!!!

  31. Now, in the US there is a conspiracy of holidays that only about 1/3 of the working population gets. We call them bank holidays because banks are closed and we get no mail. Yesterday was one such day – “President’s Day”. Like we need to sit around and remember our freakin’ presidents??? Just give me the damn day off already.

But I am a HUGE fan of the water/ice dispenser on the outside of our fridge. My 3-yr-old loves to get his own water. Oh, and that small RIVER of water flowing across my kitchen floor? I let the dog lick it up. Great partnership, those two. My kids are the reason we have a dog. Or is it the other way around?
