*[ 4 January, 2008 ]

help me…and i will reward you with treats

when you live in a place where every day from December until March (or April…or May) looks like this…

(ps. are you dying from josh’s mask?? we FORCED him to wear it because he freaks out from the wind when we – and when i say ‘we’ what i really mean is ‘their father’ took them tobogganing…that’s sledding, in canada-speak. yes, you read that right…he freaks from wind. freak. or fweek, as he would say)

…you constantly have cold weather on the mind. i mean, how can you not?

so, while some cities – that have target, by the by – are already putting out their bathing suits…our winter is only really just beginning.

so, because i’m a true believer in murphy’s law, of course, it’s right about now that my boots decide to break. not last week…when i was in Atlanta, and all boots were on CLEARANCE. no, friends, it was yesterday, while walking through a pile of snow.

boo.

so…off to buy some new boots, i go.

here’s where i need your help. because i’m non-sensible, I have lived in Toronto for 11 years, i have yet to own a pair of REAL boots. i’m a big fan of the fashion boot. the one that looks nice but really is completely and totally useless in slushy, wet weather…

so, of course, that’s what i want. again. (i’ll never learn to be sensible in the winter) fashion boots. i don’t want practical boots. i want to LOOK good. not be warm. i know, it’s twisted, but that’s me.
they need to be black. they need to be worn over skinny jeans (which, not to toot my own horn or anything, i’m fitting back into only a week after my Atlanta food-fest). they need to also be worn with skirts. i prefer the just-under-the-knee length, but i’d be willing to consider other lengths. and they have to have a heel (a wedge would be okay, i think), because HELLO! i’m short. oh, and it would help if they weren’t too, um, costly. and keep in mind that i live in Canada…so an online store that ships there is ever so helpful…
i already own a pair of these

in black and pair of these in brown

so…HELP! please…and FYI…i’m looking for something that’s NOT a winter boot…something that’s more like boot #2 and less like boot #1
for your hard work and internet searching skills…i will reward you. in the best way i know how. with coffee. or at least, with a coffee gift card.

yes, it’s true. if you leave me a boot option in the comments…a link, a picture, anything…you are entered into a draw to win this:

and i will have Emily choose the winner.

so…what are you waiting for…BOOT away!!

(also, while we are on the topic of gift cards…i’d like to give a shout-out to the lovely, lovely Keri, who not only sent me a Christmukah card this year, she also threw in a little TimCard, for which i am ridiculously thankful)

come over and say hi at Juice, my entertainment blog, today. It’s Friday, which means it’s Smackdown day…and also…i just have to say, i’m so annoyed with this whole writer’s strike/january hiatus crap we are having…no 30 Rock! no Office! no Grey’s! boo! i’m thinking i need to start growing one of these…

erm…maybe not…

You can post a comment, or trackback from your site.

Well, I am SO NOT a fashion guru. My daughter wanted these boots in one of the plaids this year for Christmas. They have a pair in black, and aren’t too horribly expensive, though they may be too close to the Uggs to be what you’re looking for. I know nothing about fashion, though, so if these really suck, go easy on me. They do look like they’d do well in cold weather.

[ 04 Jan 08 ]

I’m going to sit back and keep checking in on your comments because I’m in dire need of some new boots too! :)

[ 04 Jan 08 ]

I LOVE that second pair of boots! It doesn’t snow in south Alabama, so I wouldn’t know winter boots if they kicked me in the..err..shins! ;)

[ 04 Jan 08 ]

MTM has a pair of Sorels that are not quite as “dressy” as the second pair, but definitely more than the Uggs. They’re mid to upper calf, but without much heel to them. (Really, when you’re looking at boots, you’re either going heeled and low-practicality in slush or less-heeled and more practical for Canadian weather.)

They are like these, but all black:
http://www.sears.ca/gp/product/B000VYCSO6/sr=1-2/qid=1199457094/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&searsBrand=core&mqnodeid=15860831

I swear by Sorel, so I scanned their site and offer the following options:
http://www.sorel.com/Product.aspx?top=2&cat=220&prod=106
(a little too furry)
http://www.sorel.com/Product.aspx?top=2&cat=220&prod=107
(maybe not enough heel?)
http://www.sorel.com/Product.aspx?top=2&cat=220&prod=104
(maybe not high enough in the leg?)

OK… I’m starting to sound like one of the Queer Eye guys… it’s time for me to stop now. Have a nice day. Toodles! (Gah! Toodles? WTF are you turning me into?)

[ 04 Jan 08 ]

Oh young grasshopper….let me teach you the ways….

How about these: http://stores.channeladvisor.com/grapevinehill/Items/205460-p?sck=59678279

Ha ha ha…just kidding.

Nine West CANADA is having a Buy One Get the 2nd Pair for 50% off sale and THESE are screaming “Ali! Ali! Ali! Buy me!”

(they are available in black) http://www.ninewest.ca/product.asp?productid=2119

Course these are also sexxay and available in black: http://www.ninewest.ca/product.asp?productid=2254

As for the rest of the sale? Hello, 1981 called and they want their boots back. WTF? http://www.ninewest.ca/category.asp?catcode=188

[ 04 Jan 08 ]

Oh, dear. You want winter boots that are fashionable? I’m going to leave that to someone else, because I’ve never seen a fashionable boot that is good in snow or ice….
Can’t wait to see what you end up getting!!

[ 04 Jan 08 ]

These are pricy but – I think they’re totally worth it. Nice boots MADE for Canadian winters that don’t look like winter boots. I skipped out on a pair on sale earlier this season and I’m still kicking myself over it. Most of these are waterproof too. The site has a section that lists retailers but you can find them at other smaller stores for slightly cheaper.

http://www.lacanadienne.ca/

[ 04 Jan 08 ]

Someone aleady mentioned LaCanadienne, but I’m such a fan of the company and a fan of the boots I bought this year, that I’ll leave the link for my specific style
http://www.lacanadienne.ca/product_details.php?cat=fallwinter2007&product=serena

I got them a Feet First, but I’ve seen them in Browns too. They are everything you (and I) look for in a boot; sensible (100% waterproof and moderately warm), stylish, good for skinny jeans and skirts and black. I get loads of compliments and I would marry my boots this year if I could.

[ 04 Jan 08 ]

Here’s my vote:
http://www.lacanadienne.ca/product_details.php?cat=fallwinter2007&product=iman
I just think they are cute.
Sadly my calves are huge so they would not fit me. But, I still love them.
Good luck.

[ 04 Jan 08 ]

Ali, these are great, and they last forever:
http://www.ninewest.com/n/browse/product.s?productId=2895119&source=category&index=4&prodIndex=4&listSize=31&categoryId=&codeName=NWBUCKUP

But if you like a heel, try these:
http://www.zappos.com/n/es/d/722000915/heel_height/4/price/5/page/1.html

And this company ships for free and you can send it back for free (not sure if that applies to Canada, but you may as well try!)

[ 04 Jan 08 ]

knowing i would be shlepping two babies around all winter, i forewent the fashion boot and got myself a pair of cougars at Corso on the Danforth. I think they’re pretty cute. more importantly, my tootsies will be warm.

[ 04 Jan 08 ]

Damn, I need some boots, too. But I’m more into the warm comfort “please look like shoes if possible” options, like a lined hiker or something similar I’m fairly certain I could probably find at Canadian Tire. So basically what I’m trying to say is, I’m not much help.

[ 04 Jan 08 ]

I say get these….

http://www.kamik.com/GenfootWeb/servlet/webProductDisplay.webProductDisplaySrv?currentMode=DETAIL&curCatalog=2007&curSeason=WINTER2007&curRow=133#

… all the cool people are wearing them and they come in gazillions of patterns and colors. Go nuts!

[ 04 Jan 08 ]

These are kind of gorgeous:
http://canada.zappos.com/n/p/dp/34135871/c/231.html
I only wear flats most of the winter, despite my Love Of Heels – I’m clumsy and choose life.
I actually think that David Letterman looks nice with a beard… but then, I am married to a bearded man.

[ 04 Jan 08 ]

(Don’t enter my name in the draw – I don’t live near a Starbucks!)

What about these from Lands End? I’m kinda being practical, but I lurve me some Lands End warmth here in Boston!

I (as a fellow Canadian) find online shopping frustrating.

Grrrrr….

I will post this in my sidelog to see if any of my other peeps can help :)

[ 05 Jan 08 ]

I’m from seattle the land of rain and so of course my boots must be weather proof. But of course no woman could live with the moon boot style of the past so I am a constantly in search of the perfect shoe. I was also formerly from Lansing MI just a stone’s throw from Toronto so understand your dilemna I recommend this boot from Merrill so fashionable and completely water resistant…check it out bebe… http://www.merrell.com/Product/NZGP/Womens-Casual-Footwear/Boots/Womens/Plaza-Peak.aspx

[ 05 Jan 08 ]

I bought these over boxing day:
http://www.feetfirstshoes.com/eng/shoppingCart/redirect.cfm?sectionID=b2c/style/productDetails.cfm&itemID=66544465&&var=d&ckey=CA

They’re comfy, warm, and somewhat stylish, considering they’re a furry winter boot. I highly recommend.

[ 05 Jan 08 ]

Sweet bejeezus! I lived in northern AB and now in northern ON, and I have had the same boots for 10 years. Sad, but I just can’t seem to justify buying new ones when these are still really warm and useful.
Obviously, where I am, the fashion boot is a total waste of money. Mine are Thinsulate black boots that come just above the ankle bone. They don’t really look like boots, but they’re not high fashion.

[ 05 Jan 08 ]

While I live in Israel and am not dealing with the weather issues you are(but imagine my shipping issues!) I had these http://www.shoestation.com/shoestation/product.asp?s_id=0&prod_name=A2+by+Aerosoles+MAKE+TWO+Black&pf_id=PAAAIAENPGDJEGEP&dept_id=5569&mscssid=EGHRKT596KLH9LP5L6LBRM95LNPQ3GUC in Chicago and LOVED them. The rubber bottom make it easier to walk on ice and they hit below the knee. Cute and practical(sort of). I still wear them here and just ordered them in brown too since I love them so much! When I originally bought the black ones they were $80, so this is a steal!

[ 05 Jan 08 ]

Ebay Seller: Valleygirlshoes

I have purchased 6 or 7 pairs of boots and various other pairs of shoes from them. Have loved most of them. Usually $30ish including shipping. Can’t beat that!

I am totally with you on fashion over function. Outside here pretty much looks like outside where you live. I wore darling pair of open-toed wedges to my son’s Christmas party. You know, because I can.

People kept asking if my toes were cold. Um. Yes. DUH!

[ 05 Jan 08 ]

I like these a lot. Very cute but no heel. But WARM and CUTE…

Wish I could help you. Now that I’m in Colorado I’m experiencing my first ever real winter, and I wear ugly-ass warm snow boots every day.

But you know, the Target here has bathing suits out, too, and our winter will probably be just as long as yours. Freaks.

[ 06 Jan 08 ]

Wish I could help. I live on a farm, so I have seven pairs of boots ranging from insulated rubber boots to full on arctic boots for cleaning out the barn.

One day, we should shop together. I’ll find you proper toboganning boots and you can find me pretty, city boots.
