January 3 08

now this one, folks, is a VERY important one.

#11. I will, in 2008, fill my pop culture gaps. I will see Braveheart. I will see all the Die Hards. I will see all the Lethal Weapons. I will watch the Bournes. I will read at least one Harry Potter (because there’s not a chance i’m reading them all…). I will watch all the Alien movies. I will watch Dexter. I will watch Six Feet Under. I will stop now because this is getting embarrassing…

and the good news is that i’ve already got a head start. last night i watched The Bourne Identity. i thought it was great, but at one point during the movie i turned to the husband and said, “i’m pretty sure that’s Clive Owen…or possibly his not-quite-as-hot twin brother”

because this:

looks just not a thing like this

maybe i’m wrong…and maybe he was just really young…but…Matt Damon then?? hot. Matt Damon now? hot.

but, according to Clive, he has had plastic surgery. He says, “I’ve had tons of surgery done, but I can’t say what on.” Any guesses?? i can’ quite put my finger on it…

ps. I still hold that as far as British hairy-chested celebrities go, i’d choose Jude Law over Clive Owen every day of the week and twice on sundays…but i do UNDERSTAND the sex appeal of Clive Owen and why so many of my real-life and blogging friends have him at the top of their boyfriend list.

So, what do you say…are there movies are out there that people can’t believe you’ve never seen? TV shows? books you’ve read? let’s resolve to fix that in 2008!! who’s with me???

the husband and the kids do a lot of waiting for me. i don’t leave social situations very easily…as opposed to the husband, who decides he’s ready to leave and can flee the situation within seconds. i’m so not like that. i decide i’m going to leave, and then i say my goodbyes and then there’s always just one more thing to say and then i have to make sure i have all my belongings and then i always forget something and then i have to pee…anyway, this is a pattern with me. and my poor kids, they are always waiting for me…

here they are, yesterday, waiting for me to stop talking…

have you been over to Juice yet today??

  1. Wait, that cannot be clive owen. Clive Owen is gorgeous, that man? Not so much.

I’m with you on the leaving, i take forever. You have to say goodbye to everyone!

Comment by Ashley on January 3, 2008
  2. What happened to Clive Owen? He just needs a funky-shaved goatee and he’d be a member of Color Me Bad.

Comment by hello insomnia on January 3, 2008
  3. Ha! You know, I didn’t notice that was Clive Owen until like the second or third time I saw the movie. Oops. (I love all 3 Bourne movies. LOVE.) And you might be surprised about Harry Potter! Once you read one you may not be able to put them down! (Or maybe that’s just me…)

Comment by Erin on January 3, 2008
  4. The upper part of his head looks bigger in the later pic… perhaps camera angle? I can’t scientifically explain it otherwise… maybe he lifted his cheekbones? Is that it?

Comment by SciFi Dad on January 3, 2008
  5. Google yourself a picture of Clive’s wife. I almost cried for him.

Comment by bella on January 3, 2008
  6. I’m kind of with you on the Clive thing. I get the appeal, kind of, but not my guy. Matt Damon on the other hand …
And, I love how patient your kids look. That would not be Matt. He’d be jumping around like a crazy man.

Comment by Laural on January 3, 2008
  7. My husband can’t believe that I haven’t seen all the Star Wars movies….I just never got into Sci-Fi!

Comment by Katie on January 3, 2008
  8. never saw The Terminator movies, Six Feet Under series, or read any Harry Potter books, but not that interested in reading them either

Comment by Maria on January 3, 2008
  9. Never seen Blazing Saddles. Apparently I am seriously lacking because of that one!
I’m thinking at least Botox & an eye-lid lift for Clive. Maybe even his ears & a plumper bottom lip.

Comment by Margot on January 3, 2008
  10. I have some pop culture gaps to fill in of my own … now that sounds like a fun resolution.

Just finished getting caught up on the world according to Ali and wanted to congratulate you on your new column – it is so great. I am already addicted! And I keep meaning to tell you of the stunningness that is all the photos you have posted over the holiday season. Hottie. Stop it – you make the rest of us look bad 🙂

Comment by Sandra on January 3, 2008
  11. Hilarious post! And I luuhve Clive Owen- though, my husband is British and I think takes personal offense that I find Clive hot. Of course, he’s in love with Liv Tyler, so we’re even. Hahaha.

Comment by Myshka on January 3, 2008
  12. Ali. I just love you! You seriously are my fanorite blog to read!! You are even better than Perez to me. We got to get you famous girl!

Ok. You haven’t seen Braveheart?? I am SO glad that is in your plan for this year. And the Boure’s are GREAT too. Glad you liked the first one. I like all the “guy” shows like that.

Comment by nicole on January 3, 2008
  13. Oooh I like that resolution! I can think of a few movies that I would like to see.

Comment by Miss on January 3, 2008
  14. Just got the first Dexter DVD from Netflix, so I’ll join you in watching that show. And all but the first Bourne; I’ve seen that one.

I have read all the Harry Potters, though. Once you start them, you’ll probably read them all.

Comment by JMC on January 3, 2008
  15. How cute are your patient kids?! In my house it is my husband that keeps us all waiting, at least if we have our children with us, I am always trying to rush them all out the door cuz I am sick of chasing them around and getting them to behave!
I am way behind on pop culture as well, embarrassingly so, I think I have only seen about 4 episodes of Sex in the City! Shh. don’t tell anyone.
I do love me some Clive Owen, and although Jude Law is a bit on the scrawny side for my taste, I adore his character in the Holiday. I am madly in love with him.

Comment by Kristen on January 3, 2008
  16. There’s no way Jude overtakes Clive in my books! But I’m not into blondes. THey gotta have dark hair! Clive is way hot. Ironically, my husband is a red-head!
And I need to watch more of the Classic movies like Casablanca, especially West Side Story, since I’m Puerto Rican and the hubby is American. Oh, and Roman Holiday.

Comment by Patricia on January 3, 2008
  17. I’m with you on Clive. Jude Law keeps showing up in a recurrent dream. Love that man. Him and Brad Pitt like to hang out in my mind.

    That photo is priceless.

Comment by slackermommy on January 3, 2008
  18. I’m with you!

I WILL see The Sound of Music and Braveheart. I will finally read the last HP. But, I will stop giving a rat’s hind end what Britney, Lindsay, and Paris are up to. That’s my resolution.

As for the 2nd picture of Clive…I may need to go change my panties. Mmmmhmmm.

Comment by Jennifer on January 3, 2008
  19. Dude. I am so behind on movies that I would take hours to list them all.

I have to agree with you on Jude Law. I *just* watched The Holiday (2 years late, but whatever) and I have a teeny crush on him 🙂

Comment by Angella on January 3, 2008
  20. I broke open Six Feet Under this fall because I remembered that lots of people seemed to like it and I had never seen a single episode and man, was I hooked quickly! It’s a really gritty, raw series but well written. I really enjoyed it. I recommend it.

I still haven’t seen all the Star Wars movies or the Godfather movies but I have no real desire to fill those particular gaps. I’ve seen as much as I care to see. 🙂

Comment by Shannon on January 3, 2008
  21. Maybe the thing with Clive in those two pics are the glasses. Like a Clark Kent/Superman thing. You HAVE seen the Supermans, haven’t you??? 😉

I didn’t read a Harry Potter until this summer and I read all 7 in about two weeks. Because I’m a freak. But once I got started I couldn’t stop.

Comment by Sadie on January 3, 2008
  22. I’m one of those people who haven’t seen a lot of movies the rest of the population has seen over and over, like the Godfather etc. I’m just…not interested. Maybe I need to take your perspective, that it is a pop-culture responsibility. 🙂

I have, however, seen every minute of Six Feet Under and confidently proclaim it to be the best television show in the history of television. We’re re-watching now, on season 2.

Comment by Assertagirl on January 3, 2008
  23. Horrible to admit, I just watched The Gods Must be Crazy because I remembered that no one in college, like a thousand years ago, could believe I hadn’t seen it. And no, I don’t see anything now that I have kids. Please fill me in on what I’m missing.

Comment by Lisa on January 3, 2008
  24. You are really the only blog of my friends that I read consistantly.

I actually wished that it would be awesome to go to a Starbucks with you to tell you about the amazing week that I have had.

    Cute children.

Comment by Keri on January 3, 2008
  25. LOL! That’s too cute. My family certainly can identify with yours, I’m the same way.

And Matt Damon? Even hotter in the Bourne Ultimatum – my hubby got the set for Christmas.

Comment by Mom On The Run on January 3, 2008
  26. He’s gorj before and after — if that’s actually the before and after because I think that comparison’s basically an airbrushing thing.

    Comment by Haley-O on January 4, 2008
  27. I should join you in removing “My Humps” from the boys’ music collections and boning up on pop culture, but I’m such a geek that I read the Dexter books before I ever heard there was a show.

With my average of 2 movies a year, I should be done with all this by 2387.

Comment by Anne Glamore on January 5, 2008
  28. I’m thinking cheek implants for Clive.

And I am going to be sooooooo cracking up when you get addicted to Harry Potter.

Comment by Aimee Greeblemonkey on January 6, 2008
  29. grrrreat picture of your kids waiting for you!! I have a friend who talks a lot (like me) and one day, her son was waiting with me for her when she was talking to someone else and he looked at her, gave me a sly little smile and made the yap-yap sign with his hand…you know, the open/close/open/close like a mouth? I almost peed my pants. At least they aren’t doing that to you.

    yet.

Comment by the new girl on January 7, 2008
  30. You will be happy to know that I just finished the Bourne Trilogy. And LOVED them. I mean if you like that sort of sweat dripping, action packed Matt Damon flicks. You should make time to watch those, they are a must!
