i truly believe that children have a sixth sense. not in the creepy “i see dead people” but more in the way they can and do pick the most possible worst times to get sick.

yes. at 4 am i heard those sounds. the sounds that every mother dreads. for me, though, with my emetophobia, those sounds bring on the panics. the very worst kind of panic attacks. the kinds where you can’t breathe. and you feel sick. and you can’t. calm. down. Emily was throwing up.

and hasn’t stopped throwing up. it’s now 8:30 am. i’m supposed to be getting on a flight at 5 to go to New York. my first trip away from the kids in god knows how long. and i don’t even know if we are going anymore.

how can i go? and leave my sick baby! how can i abondon her when she needs me most? what if Isabella and Joshie get it too? how can i go on vacation and spend the entire trip terrified that i’m going to get sick too. after all, i did drink her backwash on monday. if anyone’s going to get it…it’s obviously going to be yours truly.

what would you do? stay home? go anyway?

ETA – it’s actually not Emily that i’m worried about. she’ll be fine. i know this. by tonight i’m sure she’ll be over it, or at least getting there. and i know she’ll be in good hands. it’s the other two. the less independent, understanding ones. i would die if they got sick while i was away.

also, it’s me. i do not want to get sick. and i know it’s coming. i just know. i’m just a big ole’ panicky mess. even with the xanax.

  1. Awwww Ali, that’s just not fair .. but it IS typical of kids, isn’t it. Honestly, I don’t know what I’d do in your situation. I know you have a nanny. But I understand the guilt you would feel. Hmm, maybe it’s just something she ate? Good luck in your decision. Sorry no help – but I feel for you!

  3. Awww…BOOBOO! You NEED this trip! And, it isn’t for that long…. I don’t know what I’d do. Knowing me, I’d probably stay home. See how she’s doing by noon. Maybe it’s a 24hour thing. If it were me, actually, I’d call the pediatrician and ask what he thinks I should do. I do whatever he says……I hope you get to go!!!!

  4. You know what Ali – I’ve been rethinking my comment and unless her fever is 104 (then I’d be freaking) I would go. You KNOW in your heart that she’s going to be bouncing around by tomorrow afternoon, and if you don’t go to NYC, you are going to regret it. Seriously, if there is something really bad, you could always come back, but to not go – I really think you need this (well, being a parent I KNOW you need this) .. don’t let parental guilt get you, Emily will be in good hands.

  5. That really sucks. Hopefully she will clear up soon and you’ll feel comfortable leaving. Realistically, most of these types of things are 24hr bugs, so by tomorrow she should be fine. Just keep the others away from her today and it should work out.

  6. Oh, poor thing. I hope she gets to feeling better and you get to enjoy your trip. Or not. Whichever you decide.

  8. Ugggh! That totally stinks!
I don’t know what I would do….I guess it’s easy for me to tell you to go, but if it were me, when push came to shove, I would stay home and then the kid would be totally fine an hour after my flight took off. But then again, what if you get it and barf (gasp!) all over NYC or worse..on the plane.

OK, I’ve now made things worse.

I’m dying to find out what you decided to do.

I hope everything works out for you.

  10. You need to go. =) Your kids will be fine..and moms need “away” time..so take it while you can get it. Maybe God will have mercy on you & let you skip this stomach bug. Me….no…he did NOT have mercy on me. I had it Sunday night….exorcist style.

  11. as a fellow emetephobe, i can relate to the absolute anxiety you must be feeling right now – i don’t think people who don’t have it GET IT.

i’m sorry this happened right before your big trip!

maybe it was something she ate? and non-contagious? just a hopeful anxiety-reducing thought :)

  13. A. you should have told me you were coming to New York. We could have met and had coffee, bi-otch.
    :)
    B. I would stay home. That’s just me. I can’t leave my kid in that condition, especially when it doesn’t happen often.

Now, I’m hoping this is a 24 hour thing. I hope the rest of the kids don’t get it – or you and the husband for that matter. Most of all, I hope it all goes away and you go to NY.

  14. Kids have a knack…I remember when my now 13 year old was about 6 months old and we had plans to go to Joe’s Stone Crab…a Miami institution to which I had never been. She had sniffles and my husband suggested that we should not go. I greeted him with a stare that suggested that he might never get laid again and off we went. 4 glasses of wine between waiting for a table, chatting, dining and dessert and I was feeling NO pain!

2 a.m. just as my buzz was converting to hangover, my daughter awakes crying with a 103 fever. Ugh. They know. They do it on purpose!
