The last day of camp is freaky friday themed. Not like the Jodie Foster movie. Or even like the Lindsay Lohan version. Just freaky. Unfortunately, Isabella’s version of freaky looks a lot like a giant stuffed Remy costume from Ratatoullie. Oh yes it is. Emily was good at last-minute improv. She’s wearing Shrek ears and has her hair tied up all funky and painted a mouse? cat? mouse? face on with my eyeliner, which I totally overlooked because I can’t wear eyeliner without looking like, well, a freak. Like someone straight out of Cirque du Soleil. And not in a good way.

Isabella, however, has gone into full stink-face mode, which is always super fun.

I’m fairly fond of how I FORCED her to go to camp today.

it’s way better than a stupid rat costume…

AND it seems that you can’t forget how to drive a stick shift, like I’d hoped. I prayed that I would forget over this year and then the husband would be all, “Wife! You most certainly can’t be expected to drive around my decrepit old (stick shift) civic! I will never make you drive it again.” Except. I can drive it. So, there’s that. But that thing is paid off…so it’s way down on the list of things that are going to plumb bankrupt us.

First up: Project replacing the appliances. Sure, our appliances might look lovely from the outside, but it’s amazing what a shimmery stainless steel exterior can do to an appliance. Because my dishwasher, is, um, ME right now. Yes, that’s right. Because my actual dishwasher? Well, it doesn’t do any washing. I have to rewash everything I have put through. And it certainly didn’t help when Aubrey the appliance guy was all, “Yeah. It’s crap. Bottom of the line.” That’s not exactly what I wanted to hear. And there was the whole freezer leaking into the fridge thing. So, now I am on an appliance quest. And do not get me started on the fact that my front-loading washer holds exactly three towels at one time because I might stab someone in the neck.

So, talk to me about appliances. YOU KNOW YOU WANT TO. You know you hit the appliance section of Home Depot and you start drooling over the pretty lines and colors and the french doors on fridges OMG. Brands you love? Brands you hate? Help me on my quest to bankrupt my family. It’s going to be fun!

In exchange for all the brain-picking, I can direct you over to my contest on JUICE, where I am giving away a pair of closing night Toronto International Film Festival tickets. Yes. It’s true. I mean, this is your chance to maybe, possibly run into…JON HAMM. I hear that he’s going to be there this year.

I can also direct you over here, to the contest on my review site, where I am giving away a $100 Visa gift card.

  1. When we bought our place 6 years ago, I joked that we bought a $300,000 dishwasher, and it came with a house.
I hear there is now a 4-door fridge.

  2. Since I rent now, all my appliances came with the house, but I can’t wait until I can buy a new place so I can get all state-of-the-art appliances like a subzero and a built-in-griddle and . . . I hate that I’m so old that this excites me.

  3. We got all of ours from…Sears. Yes, Sears (Kenmore). The owners of the store here are awesome and would call us when there was a sale, etc.

    Happy shopping!

    🙂

  4. I just had to buy a fridge to go in my first house, I looked seriously on craigslist.org and found a BUNCH that would have worked really well- unfortunately none of them delivered & I had no way to get them home…

I shopped around and found the best deals at Sears (& got free delivery & no interest for 6 months)

    Good Luck!

  5. I seriously love my Samsung, french door fridge. We bought the biggest we could find and at the cheapest price. Plus it has a dual cooling system which is supposed to prevent the dreaded frozen produce that had been plaguing us.
We also got new LG front loaders. I think I like them. I like their capacity, but I find I need to use hot water to get out stains that came out with warm in my wringer washer.
My mid-priced maytag dishwasher? crap. ugh.

  6. I’m also jumping on the Sears bandwagon. I bought my Kenmore dishwasher there, and it works like a charm.
And my Sears-purchased LG front loader definitely holds more than 3 towels. Love it.

  7. Whirlpool Duet Steam for washer and dryer. I swear you can put like 15 towels or like ten pairs of jeans in at a time. I love them! I also heart my big Amana Fridge, fridge on top, freezer pull out drawer on bottom (from Sears). Dishwasher I have no clue. I have one, but I am just using someone else’s (white – does not match me other black appliances *sad*) until we feel like buying one. However, I’ve heard that investing in a stainless steel interior is a good idea. No rusting and all that.

  8. Oh yes, YES, Whirlpool Steam Duet. It’s like appliance porn.

KitchenAid for refrigerator and oven / stovetop, Miele for dishwasher.

  9. DO NOT BUY FROM SEARS (at least not in Canada or the GTA)!!! They have HORRIBLE service in their repair/service dept. I agree that their sales people are great, so are their sale prices, but once you have to have repairs done good luck! HORRIBLE!

  10. What is with buying a house and it comes with crap appliances?? The house we bought was only 5 yrs old last year when we moved in, appliances the same age. Our oven broke around Christmas, replaced that. Fridge and freezer are CRAP, but I’m dealing with it (ice maker shoots ice across the kitchen, freezer randomly jumps 10 degrees and half-thaws everything, plus it’s SUUUUPER tiny) And our dishwasher looks like somebody beat it with a baseball bat and I constantly have to re-wash stuff when it comes out. And we have receipts for them so we know they were purchased with the house. I have no idea what these people did to them.

Here in the US Sears is fantastic- saw a comment that Canada Sears, not so much. That’s a bummer 🙁 As for brands, we have a Samsung washer/dryer that I LOOOVE, and our stove is GE. I’ve been told by a few repair people that the brands don’t really matter anymore- they are all ‘throw away models’, just buy for features and price. Not sure if that’s true or not, but there ya go. Good luck!

  11. That’s bullshit! You haven’t even lived there a month!

I’m not a fan of the front loading washers. I hear they kind of suck and don’t last as long as the top-loaders.

    Good luck with the shopping!

  12. You may be able to just clean out the drain to save the fridge, we had to do that. Hubs wrote about how to do it but it pretty much involves taking apart the whole fridge and he did it while I was sleeping so I have no clue how to help.

As for brands we love whirlpool (not that that’s what I have all over, its not but I love it)
