April 2 08

have any of you ever taken your empties back to MAC? i finished an eye shadow this morning and it was about to go under my bathroom counter to go and live with the 85,000 empty lipsticks, shadows, blushes i’ve been keeping and have never taken back (or thrown away either. hi, i’m ali. i’m a HOARDER) . so..how does it work? what can you take back? what can’t you? and what do you get? lipstick? i could use a new ‘plum dandy’

Last night we had friends over for dinner. right before they arrived, Josh appeared for dinner wearing his Brett Favre jersey. and a necklace. a red and white candy cane necklace. i pretty much died. on the spot. (where does such a thing even come from?)

and when i asked him for the necklace kindly, he said:

“i have a sticker for you. you can put it on your boob.”

“That’s nice, hon. Can i have the necklace?”

“Emily’s almost a lady.”

“Her boobies are growing!”

“necklace please?”

“pretty soon they will look like yours.”

“thanks, Josh. necklace?”

i SO wish i was making this up.

one of the drawbacks to having emetophobia is that sometimes you just can’t barf. we train our brains to train our bodies to everything but barf. so, last night, while a normal person would have gone into the bathroom, said hello to the inside of the toilet and gone to bed…i sat in the bathroom, on the edge of my tub, listening to American Idol (hello, David Archuletta! hello, Michael Johns! hello, David Cook! three best, by far!), with a nasty case of the shakes, trying to throw up. and i didn’t. i couldn’t. so, at 9:00, after i wasted an hour of my time, realized it wasn’t going to happen, and carried my nauseated self back to bed. and watched Big Brother. James cries. Sharon cries. Joshuah cries. shall we rename this show Big Baby?

(ps. if you ever wanted to know what BB slop is…it’s Bill Pearl’s high protein oatmeal…i’m fairly certain i could have barfed last night had i been eating some slop..)

i don’t know if y’all know Emily. not MY Emily, this one. Well, Emily has friends, Brian and Katie. and they have a daughter named Emily. and she’s hurting. she’s hurting so bad. she’s 16 months old. and she has cancer. and she’s in my thoughts today. please keep her in yours. life is so precious.

  1. Wow…your post today was an emotional roller coaster! Laughing at your kiddies (I believe you can only return MAC products in plastic containers for a lipstick) and then crying by the end linking to the post about the little girl. Thanks for sharing their important story (and your stories!)

  2. MAC – yes, I take back my eyeshadow pots but I’m not sure what you get in return — I only have stamps on my card so far. Not enough for anything yet!

Idol — gonna recap it later. 🙂

Vomit — poor you! Feel better….

VERY sad about Emily. 🙁 My heart aches for all of them.

  3. Actually, MAC changed their policy a year or two ago. You can exchange your empty pots for either a new lipstick or an eyeshadow pot, and maybe something else. The ladies (or men) will help you. Lots to choose from!

  4. I have a box full of empty useless make-up bottles and lipsticks in my bathroom cabinet. I purge them ohh about once every 2 years I think!

Just reading about the scene in the bathroom made me feel those puke fighting shakes all over. Sometimes I think my body goes into convulsions just trying not to puke. Have you ever wondered what you’d do if you accidentally ingested something and had poison control tell you to induce vomiting? lol Don’t ask me why that has even crossed my mind, but I assume I’d just die a slow and painful death while I sat there shaking and NOT puking. 😛

  5. I just kind of want to drop kick David Archuleta. I felt the same way about Jordin Sparks. I get it, they’re good, but do the “aw, shucks, thanks” demeanor grates on my nerves. With all that said, I love Carly. And Brooke. But I’m calling it: David Cook is going to win the whole thing.

And for some reason I missed Michael Johns’ performance. I don’t know how that happened.

  11. I agree about BB9-those poor people have had just about enough, I think. I thought James was going to pop a blood vessel yelling at Sheila.

Sorry about the vomit, and SO sorry about the little girl. That is just heartbreaking.

  13. I’ve only ever had two lipsticks from MAC and a friend’s horrible MONSTER of a toddler smashed them both. Little jerk.
Poor little Emily. I’ll keep her in my prayers.

  14. Take back six plastics from MAC, and get a free lipstick! Woo!

Sorry about the nausea. I hate when I am nauseous but cannot barf – that’s the WORST.

  16. I was just at MAC. If you are signed up to something, like you are a member, which is easy, you have an option of lipstick or two other things, I know one of them has to do with eyes. If not, it’s just free lipstick. I have one empty tube at the present time. I am thinking that I will be ready for my freebie in 2011.
