I wish I could say she gets this from me.

But alas.

At age 11, I would have given my left arm for a quarter of this talent and a quarter of this confidence.

At age 34, I would probably give both arms—and maybe a kidney and spleen and appendix too.

Some 4th grader said this to my son this week: Your sister has an agent? That’s funny! She’s so not talented enough to be an actress. (Who is breeding these obnoxious children, my god?)

I hope to be there when Emily’s dreams come true…and this stupid kid eats her words.

  1. I may be tearing up at my desk right now. She is WONDERFUL. Also, send that kid to me, I’ll straighten em out.

  4. Can’t wait to watch it tonight – mostly for Emily – but a little bit for the kid who sings the chorus to “spoonful of sugar” after her in that video!

  5. You go you Martell girls…naysayers be damned! I’ll be proud to be famous by (virtual) association..and to say I knew her when! When and where is the show Ali?

  6. She is really amazing. I remember my mom telling me that the most important gift that she thought a parent could give a child is self-confidence. Obviously part of that is all Emily, but I think you and Gav can bask in her glory and pat yourselves on the back too.

  7. That right there is amazing talent.

  9. Impressive. Kids can be cruel. Some of them grow out of it.

  10. Oh my God, she is AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!! Beyond talented, she’s well on her way, Ali. Seriously. It’s one thing to like theatre, and acting, but to get up on a stage and DO IT – and WELL – it’s a whole other thing. She’s doing it, and well. 🙂
And that stupid little brat, he needs a punch in the face. (Oh my God I’m so mean…)

  12. so so talented!!! i wanted to be an actress when i was a child- it was my dream. My mom didnt really support that dream so it ended up dying. I am so glad she has such a supportive mother to help her!!!!

  13. That mouthy girl will obviously be eating crow very shortly. Jealousy can be such an ugly thing.
Your daughter, however, is amazing! That voice!

Comment by Gamanda on June 14, 2012
  14. It really is. She is NOT a nice kid.

Comment by alimartell on June 14, 2012
  15. Wow! I’m speechless! Your little girl can really sing and to do it in front of an audience looking so fearless…amazing!

  16. Oh thank you. Yes. She is sooo confident and comfortable up there…it’s wonderful to see in her

  17. the thing i like about her voice is that it’s so clear. i’ve heard some girls try to sing all nasal-like and force it and that drives me nuts. she sounds so natural, i love that in a singing voice no matter what age!

Comment by julie on June 14, 2012
  18. I SO agree! When did “nasal” start equaling talent? She has a strong, clear, not screechy voice! A joy!

  21. OH MY GOD, I WILL CUT THAT BITCH.

Emily has more talent in her pinky than I have in my whole body. She will do great things.

Comment by Meghan on June 14, 2012
  22. She is SO GOOD. I love seeing how she’s improved over the years, and I think she totally needs to play the lead in Annie. On Broadway, natch.

Comment by Camels & Chocolate on June 15, 2012
  23. Not only does Emily have wonderful stage presence she sings great too! And it looks like she loves it, which is half the talent right there. She will go far for sure!

Comment by Sarah on June 15, 2012
  24. That’s EXACTLY it…she just LOVES it so much.

Comment by alimartell on June 15, 2012
  25. In my experience, kids who do that are just jealous.

As someone who trained for most of my life and went to school to study voice, I can say she is certainly good for an 11 year old! Can’t wait to see what happens next.

Comment by Becca on June 15, 2012
  26. Also, it means the WORLD to her that you are helping her do this, take it from someone who wished my parents had encouraged my dreams more.

Comment by Becca on June 15, 2012
  27. She is amazing, Ali! Wow. Way to go Emily.

Comment by Dianna on June 16, 2012
  28. She was AMAZING! So, so amazing! I am so glad I came to see it in person!

Also, that kid totally ate her words!

And that kid who played the Admiral was so my second favorite!
