August 2 07

the Simpsons movie is in theaters…and apparently, i’m the only person on the planet who hasn’t seen it. most people say it’s great, a few are saying it’s only “meh”

i thought for my thursday thirteen this week, i’d list you my favorite Simpsons episodes. just a little disclaimer here…this was hard. REALLY HARD (that’s what she said…) unpossible, even. because seriously, y’all, the Simpsons has been on for-fucking-ever. and there were so many to choose from. so, here it is, in all its glory.

please share your favorites…and let me know which ones i’ve missed.

please note…these are NOT in any particular order…

1. Cape Feare

After Sideshow Bob is paroled, the Simpsons go into the witness-protection program, becoming the Thompsons and moving to a houseboat on Terror Lake, where Sideshow Bob tracks them down.

2. Lisa the Vegetarian

best line: “you don’t win friends with salad!”

3. Marge vs. The Monorail

A straw-hatted huckster blows into town and, using a catchy song-and-dance routine, manages to sell Springfield an unnecessary monorail of dubious safety.

4. Two Bad Neighbors

Homer goes to war with his new neighbor, former president George HW Bush. favorite line: “Since I’ve achieved all my goals as president in one term, there was no need for a second”

5. You Only Move Twice

The Simpsons move to a new town so Homer can work for industrialist/philanthropist/super-villain Hank Scorpio

6. Homer the Great

After stalking Lenny and Carl, Homer discovers the secret society of the Stonecutters. Homer joins, then is kicked out of and finally becomes the chosen one of the heavy-drinking club.

7. Last Exit to Springfield

When Lisa needs braces, Homer becomes the head of the power plant’s union to keep the dental plan. Burns tries to freeze out the union, resulting in a strike.

8. Mr. Plow

“Mr. Plow” Homer and a jealous “Plow King” Barney operated rival snow plow businesses until a near tragedy convinced them they should work as a team.

9. Boy-Scoutz ’N the Hood

Bart and Milhouse find $20 which they use to go on a Squishee bender in downtown Springfield. With no memories of what accured, Bart is shocked to find out he joined the Junior Campers. Now a full fledged member, he must attend the father son rafting trip with Homer.

10. Deep Space Homer

NASA decides to send average Joes into space. Homer and Barney compete to be the lucky “average-naut,” and Homer wins by “De-fault. The two sweetest words in the English language!”

11. Rosebud

Mr. Burns’s lamentations for his childhood bear, Bobo, lead to a show-long parody of Citizen Kane.

12. Homer’s Triple Bypass

best line: Mr. Burns: Look at that pig, stuffing his face with donuts on my time. That’s right, keep eating…little do you know you’re drawing ever closer to the poison donut! There is a poison one, isn’t there Smithers?
Smithers: Err…no sir, I discussed this with our lawyers. They consider it murder.
Burns: Damn their oily hides!

13. Flaming Moe’s

Moe stole Homer’s drink recipe and turned the bar into a trendy hotspot, with Aerosmith performing and customers who channeled Cheers’ Cliff and Norm.

  1. Some of my favourites that you missed:

    Bart The Genius
He swaps tests with Martin and ends up in a gifted program (and eventually a shade of green).
“Now go on, boy, and pay attention. Because if you do, one day you may achieve something that we Simpsons have dreamed about for generations. You may outsmart someone.”

    Behind The Laughter
    The VH1 parody.
“The Simpsons’ TV show started out on a wing and a prayer. But now the wing was on fire, and the prayer had been answered by Satan.”

    The Last Temptation of Homer
When Homer ends up on a business trip with a hot coworker (voiced by Michelle Phifer).
“I love my family. All I’m going to use this bed for is eating, sleeping, and maybe building a little fort.”

  3. Love them all. Monorail is my all-time favourite. Here’s another couple of good ones:

Radio Bart – the one with Timmy in the well where they sing “We’re sending our love down the well”.

Stark Raving Dad – where Homer ends up in a mental institution with a guy who thinks he’s Michael Jackson, then MJ sings the “Lisa, It’s your Birthday” song.

  4. I love the one where they go to China to adopt, since I’ve been there/done that and loved the irreverent take on it.

  5. Or these:

Season 4, Episode 1: Kamp Krusty

Bart and Lisa go off for the summer to Krusty’s camp for kids, but instead of meeting Krusty they meet his bean-counting surrogate, Mr. Black. With their children gone, Homer and Marge enjoy a romantic summer, but Bart and Lisa are put to work making crummy merchandise, until Krusty returns and sets things right-by taking the kids to Tijuana.

Season 3, Episode 15: Homer Alone

After a stressful day, Marge has a nervous breakdown and parks her car in the middle of a bridge. Marge decides to take a vacation by herself. Bart and Lisa are sent to stay with Patty and Selma, while Homer is left at home to take care of Maggie. When Maggie goes missing, Homer only just manages to find her before Marge gets home.

My gf and I often talk about needing a weekend at the Rancho Relaxo, lol.

There really are too many to mention. Sigh.

  6. Season 4 – Homer the Heretic – Homer stays home from church on a cold snowy day and decides it’s the best day of his life after dancing in his underwear, eating a stick of butter wrapped in a waffle and finding a penny on the ground. God visits in a dream and Homer takes it as a sign to continue to skip church.
Pretty much all season 4 was awesome.

  9. My favourite is the mafia episode. Itchy shoots Scatchy spelling out “THE END” in dripping blood. Mafia members laugh and the leader says “It’s funny cause it’s true”. Used that line for years. Going to see the movie now.

  11. Good list! Its so hard to choose favorites when the show has been on the air so long… One I saw last week that has always been a fav is when Marge becomes a cop. Hilarity ensues!

  12. Great list Ali!!

I don’t really have a favourite episode per say… I just like bits and pieces of many epiodes. LOL Too broad?

  14. all great episodes, though I am not versed enough to be able to correct any of them as being a top 13. Any sideshow bob episode is a great episode.

Here’s an idea for next week — I’m curious: what are your favourite Dora episodes? ARRRRRGH!!! ;)

  20. OMG! I am a huge Simpsons fan (the movie’s pretty good) and I looooooove this T13!!

Lisa the Vegetarian — that one cracks me up still, especially when she mentally puts together the ingredients of a hog dog. *snort* To this day my best friend and I call hot dogs “bootdogs” because of that episode.

One of my all-time fave episodes of The Simpsons is the burlesque house one. “We put the spring in Springfield!” LOVE that one. And the one where Homer gets to smoke legal weed. That one was HILARIOUS.

Comment by mamatulip on August 2, 2007
  21. I just realized I called it a ‘hog dog’ above and I’m laughing so hard I’m crying a bit.

  22. You’ve done it again! Great list.

I love that line, “You don’t make friends with salad.”

  23. Not a Simpsons fan…and I am so behind on my blog-reading that I have no idea what’s up on CTT! Amy gave me so much grief about forgetting to post my TT…and was quite clear that yours and mine are the ones she looks for and depends on. And we were both late this week! Golf is just blog spelled differently and with a b instead of an f.

  24. OMG I completely forgot about the one with Bush! I loved that one. And the squishee bender – that’s funny. God that show has been on FOREVER.

Mike is collecting the DVD series, so we get to watch it in spurts of 5 or 6 episodes at a time.

I also liked the one with the magical monkey paw that grants wishes. Best part is when he gives it to Flanders and he saves the world from aliens. Alien: “Oh no, he’s got a board with a NA
    IL in it!”

Comment by loren on August 3, 2007
  25. By the by, I remember having a pajama shirt with Bart on it: “Don’t have a cow, man!” as a kid. I think I actually enjoy the show more NOW than I did then.

Comment by loren on August 3, 2007
  26. I have never been able to get into the Simpsons. Maybe it’s because I’m European, though the show is on TV here too.

Comment by Nadine on August 3, 2007
  27. “Homer, I brought someone here who can help”

    “Is it Batman?”

    “No, it’s a scientist.”

    “Batman is a scientist!”

Comment by chantal on August 3, 2007
  28. The Scorpio episode is one of my personal favorites, too. I’m a HUGE fan of all the Halloween specials as well -we have some on DVD and watch them constantly. The Harry Potter parody one – “every moment I live is agony”? Makes me laugh even after 10,000 watchings. We’re going to the movie on Monday, I think, and I’m so psyched for it!

Comment by Melanie on August 3, 2007
  29. The episode where Bart and Lisa play hockey is my fav…so many great sequences in almost every episode…the episode where Bart tries to apologize to Lisa and is standing outside her door…and shes not even in her room and Bart gets mad because shes not answering and says “mom Lisa’s making me feel bad!”, then you hear Marge’s distinct voice “Stop it Lisa!”…and then Bart folds his arms and says…”that shut her up”
