my husband makes fun of many things that i do. the way i throw my entire head back to swallow one little pill. the way i leave every light in the house on, all the time. the way i lay down in bed at 8:00pm at night and can fall asleep for the night, mid-sentence.

and lately, he’s added another thing to make fun of. he thinks that i take some sort of satisfaction out of letting people know that i am ahead of the trends. a trendsetter, if you will.

friend: “i am obsessed with facebook.”

me: “oh, me too. it’s really taken off recently, eh?” (note how well i can use the word “eh” now. correctly and everything. awesome.)

friend: “really. it wasn’t crazy before?”

me: “well…i’ve been on it forever. like, since september or something.”

husband: “oh, Ali practically invented facebook. she was the first person to join. while you were still in diapers she was already on facebook.”

now, i know he’s only messing with me, but, as i sit back and actually think about it, do i really do that? do i like to prove to people that i was watching, wearing, interested in things before other people?

shit. i think i do.

i watched Heroes from the first episode. i loved Ryan Gosling before anyone even knew who he was – i watched the frickin’ mickey mouse club when i was 12 for god’s sake. i was reading PerezHilton before anyone even knew what a blog was. i knew who snow patrol was before Grey’s Anatomy made them famous. see…here i go again…

anyway, putting this obvious character flaw aside for a moment, i did actually have a point to make in this post.

i’m always looking for new music. always. it’s a little obsession of mine. i recently discovered this band/singer that i can’t get enough of. It’s called Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly. and it’s amazing. trust me. this guy, Sam Duckworth, is going places. you heard it here first.

check out this song, called “Call Me Ishmael”

now…i have a challenge for all of you.
tell me what you’re listening to. something new. something i wouldn’t have ever heard of. something you think might be the next big thing. or just something you are totally and completely digging with now. (did i just say ‘digging’…must be time for coffee)

there are prizes for the winners, folks. real prizes. nothing exciting, unfortunately. but i will make you your very own cd of all the latest and greatest songs that i’m listening to.

worth playing for?

  1. Man, you beat me. I’d only been a Gosling fan since ‘Breaker High’. 🙂

Funny that you’d ask this– I’ve been discovering so many great indie bands in the area through our college radio. For the last two days, I’ve been obsessed with The Love Language:

    http://www.myspace.com/thelovelanguage

Download ‘graycourt’ and ‘lalita’. The versions in the embedded flash player sounds different and much tinnier.

(This is the type of music I love at least, music for walking down the street or driving my car, or writing. I’ve been playing their album on repeat while I type out this latest novella.)

  2. I had the Stone Temple Pilots, Smashing Pumpkins and Blind Melon TAPES before anyone else did, damnit! I know how you feel.

All of the music I love and thought I was so freaking cool for doing it have recently gotten huge. Like Plain White Tees, Modest Mouse etc…

We like a lot of the same music, but I’m not sure if Jen Militia would be our cup o’ tea? http://www.myspace.com/jenmilitia

  3. I love the mashups coming out of mashuptown.com. The one from Rhythm Scholar yesterday rocked.

  4. I know this isn’t music, but I had espadrilles before they were super-trendy. You can pretty much thank me for making them popular.

Comment by Tali on May 9, 2007
  5. I’ve been listening to The Fratellis lately…not sure if you’ve heard of them, but I hadn’t until Seth mentioned them to me.

  6. Just so someone specifically outdoes you, I watched Heroes online the Thursday before the episode aired. (NBC did a little cross-promo with Yahoo TV.)

I saw Our Lady Peace when they were an opening act for Salvador Dream at the Volcano in KW.

And new music? Triptaka. You can listen to some (legally) free pre-final mix MP3 at http://www.download.com/triptaka. They are industrial and list NIN and Tool as influences.

  8. Do you like country? At all? I like Miranda Lambert. She’s got a new cd out and you can listen to the whole thing free on cmt.com. I like “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” and “Desperation.” And “Gunpowder & Lead.”

If you don’t like country, I got nothin.

  12. vienna teng. i’ve been a fan of hers for years now. she’s got a non-trivial fan base, but certainly nothing in the big leagues. she went to my uni, which is how i know her, and her voice is simply amazing. she writes all her own stuff, too, and i just adore. 🙂

  13. I’ve been obsessed with the musical/rock opera SPRING AWAKENING for a while now. http://www.springawakening.com

As a michigander, I have to give props to local boy Sufjan Stevens. (Featured heavily in Little Miss Sunshine) http://www.sufjan.com

Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, anyone? http://www.tedleo.com

Another group of Michiganders: Tally Hall http://www.tallyhall.com Their songs range from the catchy to hilarious.

  15. How bout… Lily Allen? I just recently discovered her myself but you and her are probably best friends already given that you’re so in the know and all. She’s fresh, light & fruity with a British potty mouth!

  17. I think I do that too. . .
I also sometimes add songs from random bands on my myspace and then when my friends start to like them, I always remind them that I found them.
And I convinced ALL of my friends to watch Grey’s.
    And Desperate Housewives.
And I did know Snow Patrol before Chasing Cars and think they’ve done better.

Yikes. . . anyway, I’m loving Sara Evans (I’ve always loved her though) esp. Backseat of a Greyhound Bus, Perfect, A Real Fine Place to Start, and Born to Fly

She’s country though, which might be an acquired taste, but she’s my fave.

I’m also liking Nobody Puts Baby in a Corner (Fall Out Boy), Face Down (Red Jumpsuit Apparatus), and So Long So Long (Dashboard Confessional)

  19. I have been listening to the new snow patrol and some new musiq soulchild…I love hip/hop underground stuff that I can’t find anywhere but online. I have a few character flaws myself so I feel your pain…

  20. I do the same thing, I think. It’s probably fair to say that most people derive pleasure from being among the first “in the know.” Or maybe that’s just what I tell myself so I feel better about it.

I’ve really been digging Bright Eyes lately. My friend Kat introduced me to their music, and I can’t get enough of it.

  24. sorry Ali, I’m braindead–that’s “The Fawn”. I was thinking the animal and using phonetic spelling. 3 kids and 3 games today…i’m all out!

Comment by amy on May 9, 2007
  25. Noticed that no one’s mentioned the band Ratatat yet. My friend, who’s very indie, likes them, and they grow on you in a mellow way. I feel like college kids in general know things before they get popular: the first time I heard Snow Patrol’s “Run” was in the fall of 2004. (In my opinion, “Chasing Cars” is overplayed, though.)

Comment by Rachael on May 9, 2007
  26. I had to go check out “facenet”. I had no idea what it was. That’s how behind the times I am. I still have a walkman. Pathetic.

But look at how beautiful you are!!! 🙂

  27. Ali, I think you have a talent ! I think a new goal of your blog should be to keep us aware of new trends.

  28. Sorry to disappoint…but all day today I was listening to channel 25 on XM…and heard such classics as “Dock of the Bay” and “Let the River Run” by Carly Simon. Nothing new in my musical world! I did have a 5th grader ask me if we could include “Before He Cheats” as one of the songs providing the backdrop to the end-of-year party DVD pictures.

  29. Oh…and get an evil chill running up my spine whenever someone says, “Have you read…?” because I know there’s a good chance I read it long before the person asking me!

  30. I’m still not hot for Gosling. I’m the opposite of you…I don’t do most trends! 😉 No facebook for me, either!
