This is a sponsored post from BlogHer and Welch’s.

Once upon a time, a family that was made up of Jews, Christians, Atheists and Agnostics created a new holiday of sorts and named it Chrismukah. And I can assure you, the Mintz/Martell/Boye/Resudek family was celebrating it far before Seth Cohen made the holiday a household name on The O.C.

Oh, no, we have been lighting menorahs while drinking egg nog (only I would never drink egg nog…because GROSS) and hanging dreidel ornaments on the tree since before Seth Cohen had any emo tendencies. In fact, historically, the holiday has been around since the 1800s when it was referred to as “Weihnukkah,” because Weihnachten is the German word for Christmas. (That’s your history lesson for today, folks. You can thank me later.)

So, it would an understatement to tell you that our family is unconventional, and we are always creating new holiday traditions. Every year we all come together. We light candles. We open presents (on December 27th). We have carolers come over to sing. We wrap our gifts in Hanukkah paper and put them under a Christmas tree. It’s different, to say the least. But, to me, it’s nothing short of fantastic. It’s the only time of the year that we are all together. All of my siblings. All of the cousins. Everyone. We spend many days stuffing our faces with cheesecake and pumpkin pie and chocolate mousse cake and green and red peanut m&ms. We do touristy stuff. We spend days playing Rock Band in our pajamas. We build gingerbread houses and decorate them with Hanukkah candy.

We make memories.

We create traditions.

The folks at Welch’s know that there are many types of families out there. They know that every family celebrates differently. But there’s one thing that seems to be universal…when families get together, they create memories and traditions. And they have a line of sparkling juices that can make any occasion a little more personal, a little more exciting. They have recipes for drinks like The Holiday Toasting Cup, The Sparkling Holiday Punch, The Sparkling Cranberry Spritzer, and The Sparkling Cranberry Punch. These are all super easy to make, and are all sure to add a little something something to your holiday festivities.

Personally, this Chrismukah, I’m hoping to try this little ditty out on my family:

Spiced Grape Punch

Ingredients

  • 2 cups water
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 4 whole cloves
  • 2 whole allspice
  • 3 cans (6 oz. each) frozen lemonade concentrate, thawed
  • 2 bottles Welch’s Sparkling White Grape Juice Cocktail, chilled
  • 1 lemon, thinly sliced

Preparation

  1. In a medium saucepan, heat water, cinnamon sticks, cloves and allspice to boiling. Cover and simmer 5 minutes. Strain; discard spices. Cool. Just before serving, fill punch bowl half way with ice cubes. Pour in cooled spice mixture, lemonade concentrate and Sparkling White Grape Juice Cocktail. Float lemon slices on top. Makes about 25 servings.

See? SO EASY!

So…what do the holidays look like in your family? What do you celebrate? How do you celebrate? Would you try making one of these new drinks? Which one would you like to try???

  3. We are fairly normal in our Holiday traditions.
But last year I helped out with the Christmas play at the children’s mass on Christmas eve. It was so much fun that I’m doing it again this year, I think that’ll be a new tradition for us.
I may have to try out the spiced punch. What if I added… rum? Or vodka? I wonder how that would be. Or maybe some red wine to keep it in the grape family. I think about booze too much.
Thanks for a chance to win!

  4. We still haven’t figured out our holidays yet. On the one side, there’s my entire family getting together to celebrate and having a big pot luck dinner and ‘secret Santa’. On the other side, there’s guilt and judgement. I know where I’d rather be, but it has to be put to a vote.

  5. I panic a little when I ponder this question. I don’t live in the same state as any of my family members and this is my first December since ending an 11 year relationship. I guess it is time to establish new traditions. Eep!

  6. Holidays in my family are full of FAMILY and laughs. I don’t care what I do or where I am, as long as I’m with my huge family and doing something with them, like making meals or playing games.

    Great giveaway! And I’m American!

  8. Since we’re rarely able to all be together any given day, we make it a celebration when and where we can. Which is fine by me. Then Thanksgiving lasts a few weeks instead of one day. Christmas is all month long, instead of the just the 25th. Whatever ends up happening, we always laugh and have a great time.

  9. I’m a big fan of punch, but never make it. Weird.

Holidays mean we’ll be spending a lot of time eating with various members of our extended family.

One of my favorite traditions though? Decorating the tree with my guys. The smell, the excitement, the memories we have associated with particular ornaments…

Don’t tell anyone, but I hope we get snow again this year.

  10. We do the latin Christmas… which is really almost a month long event. Starting with Noche Buena (christmas eve), then Christmas Day, then New Years and then 3 Kings Day in January. Its basically a party from Dec 24-Jan 6th.

Comment by Erica on November 17, 2010
  11. We celebrate Christmas. Christmas Eve is my Mom’s side of the family and we have a huge big party with fun appetizers and we play games. Christmas day is more formal with a turkey and all the trimmings.

I would make the Sparkling Cranberry Punch. Sounds good.

  25. Thanksgiving is a lot of running around to different families. But Christmas is where it gets good! Every night in December we spend 20-30 minutes doing a family activity. Sometimes we paint ornaments, sometimes we play a game… just depends on how everyone feels. Then, on Christmas Eve we go to the family service at church, and then to my husbands family Christmas party. The kids get home and very excitedly attempt to sleep. Christmas morning is pure chaos. We have 3 kids under 7 and it’s pretty crazy. My mom and sister come over to watch the kids open presents and have breakfast. Then we go to my grandparents house, and then over to my mom’s house. It’s a fun, food filled couple days and I LOVE it!

  26. Our Holidays look like a mob – we have a large family and everyone crams into someone’s not big enough house. We get silly and play games and love every minute of it. We probably should try a non-alcoholic drink, because there are usually fights over whose turn it is to be designated driver!

Comment by Gina on November 18, 2010
  27. Christmas is a mess for us as my mom and my in-laws live 2.5 hours away from each other. It’s a lot of driving in a couple of short days.

In my family it is hard for all of us to get together because literally we are spread all over the world and there are young children with varying school schedules and jobs. But growing up my family loved just getting together and spend as much as we could with the immediate family and extended members.

  48. The holidays with my family are great, lots of food, laughter, love. My favorite is Christmas, although it gets crowded and toys are everywhere the kids have a blast. I would love to try one of these drinks, because to me Xmas is about the children and what better way than to have a good tasting non alcoholic beverage that they can enjoy too. I would try the Sparkling Cranberry Spritzer.

I STOPPED GIVING PRESENTS I CAN’T REMEMBER HOW LONG AGO. AND I WILL ONLY END UP TRYING WELCH’S IF IT EVER CROSSES MY PATH. NO PITTY PARTY HERE- I ONLY TOLD BECAUSE YOU ASKED. WE NORMALLY DON’T SHARE HOW DIFFERENT WE ARE, WE PRETEND WE CELEBRATE…

We do Christmas Eve at our house–a nice dinner, then I take the kids upstairs while my husband puts out a couple gifts from Mommy & Daddy. 😉 Then he rings the bell and we all go downstairs, sing Silent Night by the tree, and the kids open those couple of gifts. On Christmas morning, they get to find what Santa left in their stockings and under the tree. Then we go to my parents’ house so they can be SPOILED (they’re the only grandkids so far :).

I would like to try the Sparkling Holiday Punch recipe from Welch’s.

Our holidays are always pretty low-key and we often don’t even decorate (except for Halloween in which we get nuts). We celebrate the turning of the four seasons: spring and fall equinoxes and summer and winter solstices.

I received a beautiful punch bowl (my first ever) from my daughter-in-law for the holidays, and so yes, I will be trying a couple of these recipes. The first is going to be Spiced Grape Punch. The Cloves lend a holiday touch I can’t resist.

Comment by Rosey on December 31, 2010
  287. We seem to be a food centered group, so much of our conversations and actions are centered around the Kitchen. My son’s mother in law has the perfect home for all of this, so that is where we gather. We all try to bring at least one new dish, though each of us have must haves as well. I would like to add the Ruby Mulled Cider to our gatherings.

  291. I’d like to try the Sparkling Holiday Punch. As my children have become adults and started families of their own my participation is becoming less and less. We still have Thanksgiving dinner together but there are other extended family that do their own dinner.
Christmas is no longer early in the morning but later in the day after all the younger children have opened their gifts at home. I must say I have mixed feelings. I miss a lot of it, but it is definitely much more relaxed for me now.
