“Mama?”

“Yes, my dear.”

“Wah papi!” (translation: i want my paci)

“I don’t see your paci. where is it?”

“duh no! where ma papi, mama?” said with a cute little shrug.

ah. she’s delish.

Isabella often surprises me with all the things she can say. not as surprised as i was when i found out that Hugh Laurie was British, but surprised enough.

I often underestimate her (and i did the same with Josh too) because Emily was soo verbal so early. no joke, she was speaking in full sentences at a year. and that’s seriously not one of those mom exaggerations where moms are all…”well, my daughter was walking at 6 months!” “Well, MY son was toilet trained at 10 months!”…she really, truly was.

i guess maybe because i’m not expecting it, i’m blown away when certain things come out of her mouth.

“i need poon! I do it!” (that’s a spoon to all you sickos out there) when i dared to try to feed her soup. she’s a very independent girl, you know.

“i wah Dora. i wah Dora. I wah Diego. go diego. go diego. go diego. i the map!” and all other Dora related cute little phrases she says 24-7. (i can’t believe i just used the phrase 24-7….holy crap, is it feeling a little 1996 in here or what?)

“Wah mulk. go nigh-nigh. wah paci. bye-bye. see soon. luf you.” before bed. is there anything cuter than that?

we’d likely try to pass her off as mensa material, but that fact that she calls her daddy “Mama!” is holding her back just a wee bit.

  1. What a great ending.

Seriously though, I think all kids to a degree blow us away with this kind of stuff. For months and months they stare at us blankly or grope our facial features, then they spend a while where they can’t really go anywhere when you put them down on the floor, and eventually can motor around (but still can’t understand your directions). Then one day they turn to you and say, “Daddy going to work. Daddy see Anthony (a co-worker). Daddy come home later.” And you’re left to look at your spouse, both of you slackjawed.

  3. She sounds so adorable!!! I remember always being wowed by the things my kids did and said. I think we underestimate kids intelligence all the time.

As for calling daddy “mama”…….remember the show “Dinosaurs”…….not-the-mama

  4. Heh heh. My baby calls her daddy “dad-o”, which sounds very beatnik to me. Any day now, she’s going to start wearing a little black beret and playing the bongos.
Hugh Laurie does American very well, doesn’t he!

  11. so cute! when i first started nannying for two boys a few years ago, i could not for the life of me understand the two-year-old. in addition to regular small child speech ambiguities, he had speech problems because he’s hearing impaired. he sounded like he was speaking some other language entirely. but after only a couple months, we got to the point where i understood him perfectly, and his mom had to ask *me* what he was saying! he did say the most adorable things, tho. he called my then-boyfriend jeremy “duh-my.” so cute. 🙂

(p.s. thanks for your comment over at my site!)

  13. I need poon. Classic. And you didn’t know Hugh Laurie was British? He’s been on British TV for years. He’s awesome.

  14. I love the advent of language. LOVE it. (And my mom swears I spoke in sentences at a year too, even in the face of my sceptical questions.)

  15. Isabella sounds so adorable. My two year old is a little bit speech delayed, but it’s been fun hearing how her language develops. I probably sit and grin at her and look like a total fool when she says a new word.
