JUNEAmiright?

In addition to today being the first day of summer and the longest day of the year — which, incidentally, if you are a girl like me who loves this current heat wave and spends ten months of the year with cold extremities, the longest day of the year doesn’t mean the start of summer, it actually means OHMYGOD THE DAYS ARE GETTING SHORTER AND WINTER IS COMING — June marks the end of the school year — which, incidentally, if you are a girl like me who is responsible for humans who go to school, means that there are ceremonies and last-minute projects and end-of-the-year plays and 9th grade finals and 8th grade graduations and going into 6th grade locker-getting information nights. Every single day and/or evening this month has been *something*, and it’s all good things, of course, but it’s A LOT.

I almost wrote busy but some people hate the word busy even though I think the word busy gets a bad rap, but then again, I have no problems with the word moist. Interestingly, the word juicy is my moist. *hork* I also don’t really like the word pants, but don’t have any problem with the word slacks.

Also during this {sorry}busy month called June we celebrate that little holiday called Father’s Day. The difference between Mother’s Day and Father’s Day in most homes is probably the difference between family brunch and family barbecue. In our home, the days are very different. I have certain expectations of how I think Mother’s Day is going to go and then likely in some sort of self-fulfilling prophecy type-deal, I’m always disappointed and the day ends with everyone in tears. And then two days later a box of cupcakes shows up at my door and all is good again.

My husband, on the other hand, has zero expectations for how Father’s Day is going to go so the little surprises just make him so happy — honestly, a little PDA and the guy is all smiles for days. Really. This year, I had four {awesome} Father’s Day photoshoots and the father in our house was preparing for the first of his every-Sunday-night-for-the-rest-of-the-summer Brazilian BBQs so I did two things to make him happy.

Thing #1: I cleaned the house from top to bottom, including moving all of the shoes that have been multiplying in my front hall. I’m fairly sure the shoes have moved up to second place on my parenting pet peeves. I swear to god, I feel like Atreyu’s horse Artax drowning in the Swamp of Sadness when I stand in my front hall. (PS. Congrats to me for finally no longer being traumatized by this particular scene in a movie — it only took 32 years. I’m still not okay with that boat scene in Willy Wonka. Nope.)

Thing #2: I am an almost-vegetarian. And I tried a lamp chop.

I’m a giver, really.

You should have seen the look on his face.

And you should have seen the look on mine after my nephew said, “Go on, it tastes mostly like beef, except is has a bit more of a zoo quality to it.” And then I not-so-politely deposited what was in my mouth into my napkin and remembered that I am an almost-vegetarian. But boy did I make my husband’s day.

For the record, there’s not a food on this planet that would bring me joy to watch my husband eat.

Ten more days of June, you guys, we can do this.

  1. WE CAN DO THIS.

Funny how we are feeling the same on the EXACT SAME DAY. I started writing about being busy…and then hit backspace because I hear the same complaints about using that word. But it’s TRUE.

Hate moist, juicy never bothered me but now that you mention it…it’s not so great.

    xoxo
