If there’s such a thing as death by snooze button, I’m pretty sure that I’m killing my husband softly with my song.

And my head told my heart: Let love grow

I have been—purposely—setting my alarm even earlier than the time I actually need to get out of bed. Since I need to crawl my sorry ass out of bed before six each morning, I have been setting the alarm for 5:15 and hitting the snooze button. More than once.

But my heart told my head: This time no. This time no.

There’s just something wonderful about those nine-minute increments. I turn over into my normal sleeping position. Half on my stomach; half on my side. One leg up and bent, flamingo-style. Arms wrapped around my pillow; hugging it. I can’t explain it, really, this sleep position of mine. But snuggling back into my bed for nine minutes at a time is blissful.

We’ll be washed and buried one day my girl. And the time we were given will be left for the world.

For me.

The flesh that lived and loved will be eaten by plague. So let the memories be good for those who stay.

But not for the poor guy who doesn’t have to wake up at an oh-my-god-it’s-early hour and who bolts out of bed every nine minutes thinking something is wrong or we are getting broken into or someone is sick or the dog needs to go out…and yes, it’s just his wife falling back asleep with Mumford & Sons.

I am awesome to live with.

  1. I’m sorry, Ali, I think you’re great.. but oh my god. If I had to live with that, I’d totally punch you in the face. I HATE the snooze button.

  2. I do the same thing, though my wake-up call isn’t nearly as early as yours. Then again, the only one disturbed by it now is Sophie, and that little ball of Fraggle fur can sleep through just about anything. And honestly, with her curled up all adorable-like in the crook of my arm, or the back of my knees, how could I NOT enjoy another nine minutes in bed?

  3. I too have a love affair with my snooze button but if my husband was snoozing it up at 5:15 every morning, I think that would be grounds for divorce. Don’t F#$K with my sleep. You must have some other really fabulous qualities. ;) As always, I love reading your blog.

  4. I do the same thing. But MY GOD if I lived with someone who did that, I would shoot them.

It must annoy the cats. I should probably stop doing this before they eat my brains while I sleep.

  5. There’s no way a jury of his peers could convict him of any crime done to you after such sleep torture.

  6. I do it too. I set my phone alarm 40 minutes early. I can hit it three times. I am a much nicer human being when I can do this.

  7. I do this too. Thankfully, I live alone so it bothers no one. :)

  8. LMAO, just substitute my Hubby for you and that pretty much explains our house in the morning. Drove me nuts all summer…but since school has started and I have no choice but to get up (to get to work on time) I am back to my magical ability to sleep through his alarm.
BTW, Sony alarm clocks rock! First, it’s 10 minutes, not 9. And I figured it out by accident, but if you push the snooze button multiple times in a row…it accumulates. I hit it 3 times and it only goes off 30 minutes later – LOVE IT!

  9. My alarm goes off at 5:15 every morning now too, but I roll over and turn off the darn thing as quickly as I can to try and not wake Todd up (because the 5 seconds it does go off totally isn’t enough to wake him up… HA!). I lay around for about 5 minutes then force myself out of bed. It’s so weird getting up when it’s still dark outside. Getting up at such an ungodly hour should be illegal. At least we have jobs and husbands who don’t complain. :)

  11. LOL! i really can relate to that. I always alarm my clock to 4:45 am so I can be normally awake at 5 am for our water supply, but I always put it off and snuggle on my hotdog pillow.

  12. I find it so odd that you sleep all curled up at home, but when sharing a bed with shaunaglenn, you sleep like the dead.

  13. I almost always have to get up before my husband, but he is NOT allowed to do the snooze thing if I’m still sleeping. I generally can’t go back to sleep once I’ve woken up, so that’s just me getting super-pissed off at him every nine minutes until he finally gets out of bed.
