January 10 08

Well, Chris Cactus and Aimee Greeblemonkey are in cahoots. Thanks to his mad organizational skillz and her mad designing skillz, i’ve been suckered into begging you to come out of the closet and delurk. i mean, not in a Tom Cruise/John Travolta southpark kinda way…not that there’s anything wrong with that…

leave me a comment today and let me know that you’re out there.

the last time we did this…in January of 2007, i got 28 comments. (also…i used the same Tom Cruise and John Travolta joke, i see…) please, dear god, tell me we can do better than that!

i wasn’t planning to partake in this little comment whoring project again…you see, i’ve been feeling kinda…um…i don’t know, weird about the whole commenting thing. I’ve been blogging for a LONG time. since 2004. and my comments haven’t really risen that much. i mean, sure, i’ve gone from getting about 7 last year to getting an average of about 18 this year…and i used to care. i REALLY used to care. just ask my comment-whore-in-crime, Sam. it baffles me that many blogs bring in 50+ comments on posts about nothing. and no, Beck, i’m NOT taking about you, silly. you know i think you are awesome. and it irks me sometimes when i comment and comment (on a daily basis) on certain sites and i never get any sort of response back…not a recipo-comment or even a reply to my comment. i try really hard to do one other those – to comment back or to reply. i try to build relationships with my readers….so i ask you, how many times would you comment on a site without getting any sort of acknowlegement in return??? once? twice? 100? indefinitely?

(side point…just to break up this extra long post…as if there isn’t enough ali on the net (band name?) i decided to join a group on flickr…it’s called The Working Closet. it’s pretty obvious what it is…we post photos of what we wear every day. so, every morning i take a lovely little shot like this:

anyway, the group has some great, faithful members who, like me, like to take pictures of themselves, but we need some more. we need YOU! so come and join us)

so, yeah, back to my point…i wasn’t going to do it…but both Aimee and Chris emailed me to ask me to do it…and i can’t say no. i never say no. you want me to pick you up from the airport? of course i will. you need me to pick up some milk for you? sure thing. you want to go see Mr. Woodcock instead of something, oh, say, in my top 100 choices?? you bet i’ll say yes. you want to change the time of a meeting, even though it’s completely inconvenient? no problem. i can stop now, you get the point…i’m AGREEABLE.

so, i’m going to ask you a question to answer in your comment…it’s a burning question that our crew discussed at length (right after we tried to decide which of our friends had the best body…) on sunday night at dinner…

What movie are you embarrassed to admit that you love??

the husband was the only one to really give an answer…his was West Side Story. he loves the crap out of that movie. oh, and Frye admitted to really liking Legally Blonde. for serious.

now, i suppose you’ll want to know mine. sheesh…you are so nosey!!

It’s a tough one…but the first movie that comes to mind is ‘Center Stage’

you can stop laughing now.

  1. I am delurking – I really enjoy your blog 🙂

I don’t really have a movie that I love that I am embarassed about, but I do have one that I quite enjoy and is embarassing – the Spice Girls movie, which I’ve forgotten the name of. I know, mock me now 🙂

Comment by Anna on January 10, 2008
  2. Wow, yeah it really does suck to comment places (especially if you do it a lot) and then never hear back. I only recently discovered people responding to blog comments via email and I thought it was a pretty cool idea. I even considered stealing it but I’ve been blogging for.. umm.. a while and it never occurred to me, so I started to wonder if it was too late, and omg would the people that do reply back to comments think I was just copying them?! And then I chickened out..

So what were we talking about? Oh.. movies. Got it. I’m kind of embarrassed by now much I liked Aeon Flux. I didn’t even want to see it, I actually thought it looked pretty stupid, then I happened to catch part of it on Showtime and kind of I love it. (And I like Center State too. Is that so wrong?!)

Comment by Erin on January 10, 2008
  3. I won’t say it at my place, but I’ll say it here. I have never had a post hit 10 comments before, even on previous delurks. I’m (not so) secretly hoping today’s the day I crack double digits. (I haven’t been blogging as long as you, so I’m not as jaded as you are yet.)

But yeah, the non reciprocated comment thing is complicated. On the one hand, I expect something back when I comment. But there are comments on my blog from people whose blogs I read but have nothing to offer, so usually I send an email reply instead.

My embarrassing movie was actually Legally Blonde, but since you already mentioned that one, I’ll go with The New Guy. I own both and would have worn them out if that was possible for DVDs.

Comment by SciFi Dad on January 10, 2008
  4. Yup, Sci Fi Dad certainly should be embarrassed about The New Guy–what a horrible movie!
I can’t think of one right now…hmmmm….still half asleep! Sorry 🙂

Comment by Multi-tasking Mommy on January 10, 2008
  5. Too. Many. Questions. Can’t. Handle. The. Pressure.

    Ok, yes I can.

    1) For no rhyme or reason, I will get between 5 and 30 comments on any given post. Some I think are my most genius writing will get the lower amount and those that I think suck can get 25. I think the ones that seem to get the most are the ones that have something slightly controversial (though i avoid it at all costs) and people just HAVE to chime in. Luckily, it’s all be in good graces and never a fight.

1a) I am a good “blog friend” – I feel like I form relationships with those in this world who give back what I give. It’s like any other friendship. If I called you 40 times and you never returned my calls, why should I bother? You obviously don’t want anything to do with me.

    b) I find it hard to comment on every post by every blog I read because I am a busy bee, but I at least try to make an effort often enough that the writer feels acknowledged, that I care, and I am still there, reading and nodding my head.

    2) The movie I’m embarassed to admit I love is BioDome. Or Son-in-Law. Or In the Army Now. Anything Pauly Shore really. I can recite them line by line. I know, sad. Oh well.

Now that I’ve completed a novel, I’m out like a fat kid in dodgeball!

Comment by AndreAnna on January 10, 2008
  6. I just de-lurked a few days ago. I can’t think of a movie at the moment, even tho Fisher King is about my fave and most people can’t figure out why?

And how do you return comments? That sounds pretty stupid, but I’m really not sure. I appreciate when I get them though, and even though I have very few readers, I’d like to give them that courtesy.

    Thanks Ali!

  8. I’m here! Happy Delurking Day! And I really liked Center Stage even though I couldn’t believe that any of them were really dancers. Then again, it was a movie.

  11. Hey Ali!
I’ve tried the whole delurking thing with not very much luck. But I continue to blog because I like it.
Embarrassing movie? Hmm..not much embarrasses me but I’d say Romy & Michelle’s High School Reunion.

Comment by Lesley on January 10, 2008
  12. Hi Ali – love your outfit, you look gorgeous (as per usual).

Movie: St. Elmo’s Fire – sigh, saw it 5 times at the movies when it came out!

Did you get my Xmas card?

Comment by Heidi on January 10, 2008
  13. I’m not delurking. I’m here quite often. 🙂 You know, I try to respond to everyone who comments on my blog…unless they’re there just to get me to come to their blog. “Ha ha, that’s a funny story. Come visit me at blah blah…” I hate that.

That’s a great Flickr group BTW…I suspect they’d get tired of seeing me where the same two outfits every day, though.

Comment by Stacy on January 10, 2008
  14. Hmmmm, I comment on your blog once in a while, and have got some nice emails from you in response. I’m not always sure what to do when someone comments on my blog. If they ask a question, I will either respond in my own comments, or sometimes I’ll email. But I try to make sure to visit the commenter’s blog and comment there. We so need an Emily Post (get it, Post?) for blog commenting ettiquette.

Movie I’m embarrassed about? Anything with Steven Segal in it. No realistic plots, no realistic characters, crazy body counts, but SO MUCH FUN.

Comment by alison on January 10, 2008
  15. I got to know you because you left a comment…and I came to meet you, so you know how I roll 🙂

Seriously, though, I ALWAYS at least email a new commenter, and will usually go see their site and say hi.

I only come back to the ones who grab my interest.
    Like yours 🙂

Comment by Angella on January 10, 2008
  16. I’m here (u know that) and I comment frequently but wouldn’t consider myself a blogastalker (yet). I wish I could email people that comment on my blog, but blogger doesn’t have such a feature. Until then…

Comment by Holly on January 10, 2008
  17. Read your blog every day, rarely comment. So many sites that get a ton of comments are “Love it!” or “SO funny!”. I just don’t feel the need to add that for some reason.
Can’t think of a movie but at my age am so embarrassed to say I watched 15 years of Real World on MTV. Now I only watch the challenges which is still embarrassing.

Comment by Kathy on January 10, 2008
  18. I am delurking, and I hate to admit it but I am a “Center Stage” fan. I love your site.

  19. I think I’ve commented here.

Sound of Music is my evil secret. I love the songs.

    Comment by M&Co. on January 10, 2008
  20. Um, am I a lurker if I read every day but am too lazy-ass to comment most of the time? (I love delurk week and play along every year. I’ll post something tomorrow, so c’mon over and reciprocate the love!)

Hmmm, embarrassing movie? That’s a hard question! Maybe Highlander, or LadyHawke, two of my geeky high-school faves.

Comment by DaniGirl on January 10, 2008
  21. Hi Ali – I’ve only commented a few times but read your blog every day…movie I’m embarassed to admit that I love? 10 Things I Hate About You is up there…or maybe Freaky Friday with Lindsay Lohan.

Comment by Joscelyn on January 10, 2008
  22. Hey Ali!
I comment here from time to time…and I have to tell you that I love that you take the time to email me after I have commented. I have never been sure if I am supposed to respond to your email, or if you would just think I was some whack job looking for a friend. I am, but that is not the issue!

The movie I am ashamed to admit that I love love love is Sugar and Spice…please…I already know…that is why I am ashamed to admit it!

Comment by jodi on January 10, 2008
  23. I am a semi-lurker. I read everyday and comment occasionally. I am not a big commenter in general (my spouse would disagree with this, he seems to think I have something to say about everything!). Honestly when I manage to actually read a post of someone’s in one sitting (rare) the baby will start to cry (often) and I never even get to the commenty part!
    See…right now…crying…bad Mommy blogger!

Comment by Clink on January 10, 2008
  24. Not really delurking, since I do comment sometimes, but I had nothing to say today, and am commenting anyway, for your delurk. Plus, I am practicing run-on sentences.

Comment by JMC on January 10, 2008
  25. I’ve commented here and there – but hi! I love your blog and check it daily. Also love that you joined the Working Closet! I was a regular member for a bit but have slacked off (or run out of fun clothes to show…probably a bit of both).

Comment by Jen on January 10, 2008
  26. “I said Brrr – it’s cold in here! There must be some Toro’s in the atmosphere!
    Oh-ee-oh-ee-oh…ice ice ice..”

That’s from a movie I could watch over and over. I can script it I’ve watched it so many times.
    Bring It On

Oh and I’m certainly not fishing for any, but I rarely, if ever, get comments these days. It could be because I don’t post that often, but when I do…it usually goes unread. And I’m ok with that. Mine’s not fun like thse ones.
I spend more time on facebook. It’s quicker.

Comment by Christine on January 10, 2008
  27. Oh ya…and I don’t expect acknowledgement (did I spell that right?) when I post a comment, but it sure is nice when I get a litle email back 🙂

Comment by Christine on January 10, 2008
  28. First, I am TOTALLY with you on Center Stage. And I’ll give you a second one. Ready?

    Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.

Go look it up if you haven’t seen it.

I have about 50 more that are worthy, too. I could go all day. We should have an embarrassing movie dance-off or something.

Comment by Aimee Greeblemonkey on January 10, 2008
  29. My guilty pleasure flick is Beaches!

Comment by Dory on January 10, 2008
  30. I’m going to be very original and say: ‘Happy Delurking Day’ !! 🙂

Hmmm. I love The Bodyguard with Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner. Usually I think Kevin Costner is as far away from sexy as you can get, but in this movie, he actually seemed kinda hot to me! Maybe it was the whole macho bodyguard thingy or something. There. I said it and totally embarrassed myself! I’d this only for you Ali, only for you 🙂

Comment by Tova on January 10, 2008
  31. I love comments too ! However, I’m not evening posting my site addy today because there isn’t a good post up there. I don’t get very many comments though. I think it’s due to two factors: 1) I don’t have a Monday-Friday blog 2) I don’t often post pictures and 3) It’s a pain to comment on my site. So I’m not really helping myself.

I can’t even answer your question ! I’m a cinematic snob and there are not many movies that I like. I feel kind of bad about it too.

    Happy Delurking Day !

Comment by Heather on January 10, 2008
  32. It is disheartening to comment on a blog time after time and never get any sort of response.
And the movie I’m embarrassed to admit I love? Pretty in Pink. Love Molly Ringwald!

Comment by Katie on January 10, 2008
  33. Clueless and Dumb and Dumber came to mind right away. But that’s not even the worst of it – if I see “The Betty Broderick Story” (parts one or two) is playing on Lifetime, I always tune in.

    I win.

  36. Delurking! Heh.
I am VERY glad to hear that all of my posts get the Stamp of Quality. Awesome. I think there’s a weird thing that happens when someone gets lots of comments everyday and becomes this little microcelebrity, with a wee cult following who approves of everything they do – who needs a herd of yes-men? And then you never see these blogging microcelebrities around the blog world anywhere, unless they’re jetting around and visiting each other. Phooey to them, I say.

Comment by Rebecca on January 10, 2008
  37. My answer is Center Stage, too! It popped into my head as soon as I read the question, and then I scrolled down and heaved a big sigh of relief that I’m not the only one. The acting is atrocious, I know, but the dancing! My god, that dancing is good.

Comment by Audrey on January 10, 2008
  38. Wow! I had to work at it to de-lurk, scrolling past all those comments to leave mine 🙂

Comment by Liz on January 10, 2008
  39. I’ve been reading for a while now – I just never think to comment unless I have something relevant to say about the current post’s topic. While it’s nice to receive a little note from the blogger afterward, honestly, I don’t think it’s necessary. I don’t really mind either way.

As for movies. Hmm, Aimee Greeblemonkey had a good one: Girls Just Want to Have Fun. Ohh, the number of times I’ve watched that one. My other one is Real Genius. From 1982 with a cute Val Kilmer. I could just about recite that movie.

Comment by Carmen on January 10, 2008
  40. Hi, started reading a couple days ago actually, and I’ve already commented several times. Howdy!

Embarrassing Movie: Adventures in Babysitting. I love it. “No one leaves without singing the Blues”.

Sorry – small Shrek moment there.

I’m not delurking at all – I comment here all the time, like every day. Or maybe once a week. Once a month?

You’re in my reader chick – I read every entry – you KNOW that.

Comment by Karen Sugarpants on January 10, 2008

Comment by manda on January 10, 2008
  44. Here I am! You are in my google reader so I am reading, even though I don’t comment all the time. And I do appreciate your replies to comments. I think that’s really sweet. 🙂 I’m still trying out how to do it without seeming desperate on my blog. 🙂

Movie I’m embarrassed to admit I like? Well, I guess lots of really girly chick flicks. Maybe A Walk to Remember?

Comment by Shannon on January 10, 2008
  45. Well – I feel it’s a little trendy now to say what movie you’re embarrassed to love. I love a lot of cheezy movies and I can’t say I’m embarrassed to love any one of them. Especially Centre Stage – awesome choice. So just cause you’re looking for delurking – I’ll post a TV SHOW that i’m completely embarrassed to love which is CTV’s Instant Star. Completely for kids but the guy who plays Tommy is HOT! So there. Have a fun day.

Comment by Janna on January 10, 2008
  46. looks like the delurking is going well! as far as movies – I don’t have any I’m embarrassed about although I like plenty of stupid, awful movies

Comment by bananafana on January 10, 2008
  47. The very reason I kept coming back to your blog was because you responded to my comments with an email. I thought that was so great. And now I totally love your blog. Except… can I be honest? Not loving the sweater. Don’t hate me. I think we’re just… different. 😛

My movie: Stick It. LOVE IT. “I have totally earned my spot. I’m practically a dalmation.”

“Dalmations are born with spots, they don’t earn them, WHICH IS EXACTLY MY POINT.”

    “Dogs are people, too, Haley!”

Comment by Chris on January 10, 2008
  48. I read your blog faithfully, however I don’t comment that much on any blog I read, I would need another six hours in the day.
And about your question: I own and like every single Olsen-twins movie ever to be released on dvd (though not the series), is that embarrassing enough to admit?

  50. Hi! Happy Thursday. I just want to tell you that I love your comments on my blog and the return comments from comments I leave on yours. I really think that helps encourage your readers to keep coming back.

I also LOVE me some Center Stage. It’s probably one of my all time favorite movies. The one I’m almost embarassed to admit I like is EuroTrip. But it has Matt Damon as a punk singer! It’s totally worth Netflixing.

  58. I’ve commented a couple times before (a loooong time ago) but I do read your blog every day. I can understand your frustration about comments, although I mostly have my blog for myself and for my friends/family who live too far away for us to communicate regularly through the phone or IM (nine-hour time difference, anyone?). But I’ll be comment 56! Seems like you have a lot of readers yourself!

Oh, guilty pleasure movie: Never Been Kissed. (Eek.) Although I haven’t seen it in a few years, so I might not get as much enjoyment out of it as I did when I was 15.

  59. Movie I Am Ashamed of Loving: Clifford.
It’s an old Martin Short comedy. Very warped and twisted, but I pee myself laughing. No one else has ever seen it, and the few who have judge me harshly for thinking so highly of it. 🙂

It usually takes me about 10 or so comments with no response to stop trying. I still read, I just dont comment as much. Its sad huh!

  64. I think you might be my first comment ever! Yes, EVER! I always feel as if I really shouldn’t comment because, you see, I don’t have a blog. I just like being entertained by all of you lovely people. And I have no writing talent. Whatsoever. So I just read my handful of blogs-I-love (of which you are at the top)(kiss, kiss)) and continue to wish that I had writing talent.

My favorite embarrasing movie? It’s a doozy. It’s called Fast Forward and it is an early 80’s teen dance movie. It’s HORRIBLE. And I love it to pieces.

  65. Not delurking cause you know I read, but …
Embarrassing movie would have to be “Bring it On”
    I can recite lines.
My last pregnancy one of our sales reps sent it to me as a baby gift because he and I would recite lines from it

  66. Ok, I left the exact same comment over at Cheety Monkey…
I’m not really delurking because I comment all the time, but i thought I’d just say hi and that I pink puffy heart you tons Ali…and if I were stranded on a desert Island and could only get two blog sites on my laptop (that had mysterious wireless internet but could only hit two sites), they would be yours and Haley-O’s. No joke. You two are my fave bloggers ever. Even more fave than Dooce, because you love me back and she won’t give me the time of day.

And that restraining order thing kinda irked me.

  68. Ok, so I don’t often comment. Sorry. 🙂 As for my favourite movie that I am ashamed of, well I guess it is a genre. I love teen flicks. You know, stuff like musicals that will remain nameless. (Deep, deep shame.)

  69. I’m not delurking. I try to comment OFTEN because I love you. I try to respond to many of the comments left at my site, it’s something I struggle with and feel guilty about everyday.

Anyway, about the movie…mine is Urban Cowboy. Shut up. It’s a good movie. And John Travolta is in it as a cowboy! Hell-O!

  77. I will never ever repeat this secret again, but I LOVE Center Stage! My roommate and I in college were pulling an all nighters when we started watching it, and one night we moved all the furniture in our room and learned the dance that they do in the “cool” dance studio. Don’t laugh…but I do still watch it every once in a while 🙂

Comment by Unnaturally Blonde on January 10, 2008
  78. I haven’t seen Centre Stage yet, but I think I’m going to have to. My secret embarrasing movies are stick it and step up, and save the last dance. I don’t even know why, the acting in most (if not all) of them is awful.

  80. are you effing kidding me? 80 comments? why come no one loves me that much?! 🙁

as to the question you asked, i’m not ashamed of anything. i embrace all my dorkiest movie loves, even “milo and otis,” the cheesy kids movie about a pug and a kitten who go on an adventure together across the countryside. woo!

Comment by Lara on January 10, 2008
  81. I loved Ever After and Knights Tale. I could watch those over and over. The hubby loves Bring It On. (We’ve watched that over and over- but he said he was doing it for me). He also mentioned Zoolander.
When do you have time to read all these comments?

  87. I find the people who comment the most are those that blog themselves.

I don’t have a favorite movie I’m embarassed to admit. Moulin Rouge is my favorite, or Spanglish.

My closet love is of Phil Collins…

  94. I think everyone already said most of the movies that I am slightly embarassed to love! LOL… ummm… we watch anything. and like it. I loved Evolution with David Duchovny (sp). hehe

Comment by Tracy D on January 11, 2008
  95. Plus… 28 comments is a lot as far as I am concerned! LOL I am lucky to get, like, 3! But then I just started blogging and hardly anybody reads my blog! I mostly write for myself anyway. But I do love to read everyone else’s. I try to comment on each of the one’s I read… just not every day. Cause three kids makes my time pretty limited! Looks like you are doing fine for comments this year! Love your blog, btw…

  96. i’m not exactly a lurker, since i have interviewed you (twice i believe), and we are facebook friends, haha…i am just a very bad commenter, even on sites that i read very regularly. sorry!

i will confess that i very much enjoy new york minute (yes, the olsens movie), and i may or may not have it on dvd

Comment by katie on January 11, 2008
  97. Consider me de-lurked… and you’re that much closer to 100 comments!

    ‘Tis somewhat cheesy and oh so predictable, but I love, love, love “You’ve Got Mail”…(;

  98. Delurking to say “hi”!

As soon as I saw other people mention Pauly Shore, I realized what my embarassing movie was…Encino Man! Ok, but wait, in my defense, I haven’t watched it in years! Probably would hate it now but man I thought it was hilarious way back when!

Comment by Judy on January 11, 2008
  99. Not really de-lurking since you knew I was lurking.
I am proud to say that I like many dorky movies and don’t hide it. I will however confess to watching episodes of Beverly Hills 90210 on youtube recently.
Love the idea of the flickr group. I work from home in the evenings so I am usually wearing pajamas(ah, the good life), guessing nobody needs to see that!

  100. Just new to your blog so not really delurking but guess felt should say Hi.
I feel exactly the same way about people not responding, not asking for them to read my blog but sometimes a thanks for stopping by is nice. I try to comment on everything and after a few weeks with nothing give up. Im terrible with replying to comments but always stop by the persons blog

Comment by Laura McIntyre on January 11, 2008
  101. I love that you’ve got over 100 comments! I found you through urban moms and Haley-O about a year ago. And I know you guys don’t think you have cross over readers, I’m one who reads you both. I esp love your Friday smack downs for your comments about The Office, Grey’s and Survivor. Can’t think of a Dorky movie, but I’m sure there are tonnes, I just have a horrible memory.

  104. I usually get around 3-10 comments. Not a lot. Oh well, such is life.

My most embarrassing movie love would have to be Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I can’t believe I told you that.

Comment by Andi on January 11, 2008
  105. I just found your blog today & I just love it it makes me giggle and I enjoy your topics!

My most embarassing movie to admit to liking ummm would have to be The Lizzie McGuire movie where she goes to Italy! LOL

Comment by Lindsay on January 11, 2008
  106. Center Stage is AWESOME. Don’t ever be ashamed for loving it. For equally shitty movie-going fun, try Stick It. It’s basically the same thing, only with gymnastics.

Comment by metalia on January 11, 2008
  107. Well, I’ve commented before, so I’m not really delurking per se… especially since I’m a day late 🙁

Movie I’m embarrassed to admit to loving? Hmmm… “Spaceballs” since it’s so damn stupid and it makes fun of my Star Wars obsession…

Comment by Maureen on January 11, 2008
  108. Not delurking, of course but couldn’t read without telling you “Dirty Dancing” or “Weird Science”…or maybe “Fletch” – Dr. Jellyfinger (heeheeheehee…love that movie)

Comment by Jen on January 11, 2008
  109. Hello there! Love the blog. I am new to blogging, commenting and delurking.

I am a day late, but I can never miss a chance to embarrass myself by admitting my favorite movie. And I mean favorite. Not just a movie I like. Grease 2. Haha! I bet you enjoyed that one. My husband is so embarrassed.

Comment by Megan on January 12, 2008
  110. I’ve gotten passed the embarrassment and full-on embrace my choice: The Princess Bride.
