November 8 06

so last night i went to my first jeans party. i didn’t really know what to expect going in. was it going to be like a tupperware party? was i going to feel pressured to buy? how would something like this even work?

Ilana and Tova convinced me to come…and that it would be fun, even if it sucked. And, of course, they were right.

basically, when we walked in, there were about a dozen super tall, super skinny women walking around in awesome jeans. and then, off to the side, there were three Israeli women pushing the jeans. all the brands were represented…Rock and Republic, True Religion, Miss Sixty, Frankie B. They tried to get me try on “the skinny”, but we all know how i feel about those

I actually did find a great pair of jeans. lifted my ass. sucked in my belly. i looked hot. i almost bought them too. almost. Ilana bought a shirt (since they weren’t selling any maternity jeans) and Tova bought her second ever pair of jeans (and they looked HOT on her). at $180 they were considered a steal, since Israeli woman #2 assured me that they’d be $350 in the stores.

what made my decision for me, you ask? well…i’ll tell you! A jeans party DOES in fact work the same way as a tupperware party. the more jeans they sell, the more perks and free things for the host, Michelle (i think that was her name…). lucky her. so…the way i figure, it was in her best interest to try to get me to buy something.

but she took no interest in me whatsoever. she didn’t ask me my name. or if i was looking for something. or recommend a pair of jeans that she loved. or check out the jeans i was considering. sure, i understand she was busy…but i wasn’t going to throw a big ole’ commission her way, if she didn’t even bother to try to get it.

so, she lost out. because i’ll be in the states over Christmas and will probably buy me an awesome pair of jeans…on sale…like i did last year.

check out my new baby!

it’s not really all that exciting of a phone. sure, it’s pink. and it takes pictures (humor me, i’m way, way behind the times when it comes to cell phones). this, my friends, is my very first cell phone that’s all mine. every other phone i’ve ever had in my life was a hand-me-down…either from my dad or from the husband. It is such a nice feeling. and she sure it pretty.

if you get a chance today, come on over and see me at Fabulous, and tell me how you found me!

I’m it! I was tagged by Jay at Crazy life, makes me tired. since i love books and i love a good meme, here goes:

one book that changed your life: Are You There God, It’s Me Margaret?

one book i read more than once: Franny and Zooey

one book i would want on a desert island: duh, this one.

one book that made me cry: most recently, The Time Traveller’s Wife

one book i wish i’d written: Gone With the Wind

one book i wish had never been written: The English Patient. i can’t finish this book. no matter how hard i try.

one book i’m reading now: A Million Little Pieces.

one book i have been meaning to read: The Other Boleyn Girl

one, two, three people i tag: Haley (because she loves her some memes), Karen (because she sent me a book!), and Beck (because we were just disagreeing over books. he.).

  1. That jeans party sounds great, unless you are heading to the US and can get better prices.
I picked up The Other Boleyn Girl thinking it was a historical novel. Its not it is TOTAL trash. I could not put it down and lent it out to my friends. Plus now its a trashy movie. Can’t wait.

  2. I can never attend any of those parties since I’m too cheap to buy anything. Even if it’s $180 from $350! Are you insane? For a pair of jeans? That’s 10 boxes of size 5 diapers. And I’m with you on the “English Patient”, boy that was dry like the dessert. I couldn’t finish it for the life of me.

  3. $180 for jeans here is pretty standard – Levis alone are around $100, it is crazy!! Says she who is currently bidding on a pair of Citizens of Humnaity pants, LOL, but my max bid is $20!!!

Re books, mmm, reading The City of Falling Angels by John Berendt ATM.

Loved Hitching Rides with Buddha, by Will Ferguson – love ANYTHING by him and his brother, they are so funny.

I love “trash”, ahem – faves include Nora Robets, Cathy Kelly, Marian Keyes, et al – except I call it mind candy ROFL….

Have read all the Ondaatje novels – can’t say I really could get “into” them, but as a nice Canadian girl, felt it was my patriotic duty…

One of my all time faves: Barometer Rising, Hugh Maclennan.

  4. Not that you weren’t already, but you are now officially in my cool books. Of all books you have read more than once, you chose Franny and Zooey… not Catcher, not Gatsby (note I know this is a different author, but you know what I mean), not some other more “mainstream” lit… And for that, you rock.

Have you read much Hemmingway? I know he’s a little too macho man for some tastes, but…

Oh, and have you read Rushdie’s Satanic Verses (totally changing horses I know, but if you like F&Z I think you’d appreciate it).

  5. I buy my jeans on eBay. Guess Jeans for like $30 plus shipping. No way would I pay $180 for jeans!

  6. Oooh. You know you can get your money back for A Million Little Pieces?

I loved The Other Boleyn Girl. Total trash, but hey, at least it’s Tudor trash.

  7. A JEAN party? Really? I was invited to a Fantasia party the other night, but I didn’t go because this town is just TOO small to advertise my taste in, uh, sex toys.
I’ll get right on that meme!

  8. LOL! Loved the desert island book. Super clever. Favorite book: Hands down, Count of Monte Cristo (and I’ve read it two times and think I may take it for another spin). Never read, still: Gone with the Wind. Reading now: Extremely Loud and Incredible Close (thank you). Hated: Empire Falls. I remember reading a book recently that I loved and left me crying at the end. Can’t for the life of me remember which one. Oh well.

  9. I’ve never heard of a jeans party, let alone been invited to one. Sounds like something my husband wouldn’t want me to go to. The only similar thing I’ve been invited to was a sex toy party, but I didn’t go because it was 2 hours away from home, and I’m getting prudish in my old age so I didn’t want to talk about sex with a room full of strangers.

  10. I so need a jeans party…my jeans collection consists of one pair of “go out” jeans from Lucky Brand and two pair from Eddie Bauer.

And, the first thing I thought when I saw this post was, “My lovely lady lumps”…how ironic it was a post about jeans. 😉

  11. $180 for jeans is a steal in most boutiques!

  12. First of all, where are you going in the states? If you are coming to South Florida, I have a great store to send you to. They will notice you, ask your name, carry things to the dressing room for you, etc.

Second…I tried to read The English Patient, but I had already seen the movie so I was seeing Ralph Fiennes and that gorgeous blonde as I read. The movie is wonderful!

Third…my answer to several of those questions is The Outsiders….just reread it because my 10 year old son read it. I cried. And I think as an adolescent it might have changed my life!

Oh, Franny and Zooey, one of the best books EVER!

  14. Wow, you guys look GORJ! Tell Tova hi, and I hope she likes her art! 🙂
I hate those kinds of parties. HATE. Hope you can find those hott jeans elsewhere….
LOVE the new phone!!! LOVE pink (have tried to find a pink phone, couldn’t, so ended up with the ugliest, most popular red one…blech). LOVE that it takes pictures!
Oh crap — the Time Trav’s Wife made you cry?? I don’t wanna be sad….I’m reading it…. I’ll get mine up tonight. 🙂 Thanks for the tag. I do love me the memes. 🙂

  15. I’m surrounded by the coolest, the hottest, and the very latest in jeans ALL DAY at my job, and I don’t wear them, so in your search for the perfect pair, definitely check out our stock at http://www.ronherman.com. I’ll live through you.
I’m not just plugging the company I work for, they really are the authorities on denim in the “states.” They’re very into the skinnies these days, though – supposedly, there’s a skinny for everyone.
