September 12 08

i’ve mentioned before that i took ballet for many, many years. my sister and i were stuffed into leotards and tutus (that we wore under our porsche hoodies…courtesy of my dad) (even during those horrible adolescent pudgy years) and sent off to dance in our ballet school that was conveniently situated in the basement of a bowling alley.

(a picture on Monday. i promise. but…no laughing)

there were many, many times that i wanted to quit. when i had to miss parties. or when it got too hard. or when i didn’t get the parts i wanted in the shows (there are only so many times you can play a mouse in the Nutcracker…). or when i got too calloused. or when i had to ICE my feet. or when they wouldn’t let me wear underwear (i know…the irony, eh?)

and my mom always gave me the same answer.

“when you are a mom, you will understand”

and now i do. i REALLY do.

prima #1, the tiny dancer version (hold me closer):

(why yes, Virginia, that IS the souvenir i brought home from blogher!! see?? it got put to good use. because have you ever tried to buy a black tshirt for a three year old? there’s nothing but pink and purple as far as the eye can see. Where’s an American Apparel when i need one Metalia!?!)

(also? the pants. i guess she doesn’t wear a size 4. i frantically sent the husband out because all of her size 2s from last winter are capris on her now. why didn’t i ask for size 3, you ask??)

prima #2, the 7-9 hip hopper:

front and center, my daughter.

dancing to Timbaland, no less.

and, the mama. the mama who understands WHY

  1. oh man…this makes my ovaries ache as I’d love to have a little girl just to watch her learn how to dance…but having a third child is out of the question.

The dance pictures are so cute. I can’t wait for Ella to be at that stage!

  8. oh that is so cute, I am glad they are in dance. I was a dancer for about 20 years and I think it teaches kids so many great values. Plus they look so cute in the costumes

  11. First, I don’t believe for a minute that you were ever “pudgy” in your adolescent years.

Second, yesterday I came downstairs to find my daughter twirling and doing leg kicks. I asked her if she was a ballerina and she told me no.

    She was a ballet dancer.

    Well, she sure showed me.

My mom let me quit ballet because my teacher screamed at us – constantly. But I do wish I had some of those talents now… oh well.

    Again, ADORABLE!

They are so cute and really look like they are enjoying themselves! Not that I’m surprised that Emily is excited to be front and center.

My niece is taking dance lessons and asks my SIL eveyday “we go to dancing today, mommy?”

  16. I WANT THEM. Give ’em to me, now. The lovely ladies, that is. Adorbs.

Also, I was totally a mouse several times over. And a maid. And a flower, like four years running. Shows how much I sucked at ballet–was never good enough for a better role, ha!

  17. You know I totally enforce the “no underwear” rule in ballet with my girls.

It just looks so much better.

  22. The kids look adorable!!! Miranda has been doing ballet for about 18 months (since before she was 2 1/2) and loves it . She is in a production called The Magic Jewels in a couple of weeks – she is a present (go figure).

If you need some gear, let me know – M wears pink to ballet but does gymnastics too – she has a black leotard, footless tights and yoga-ish pants – all in black. Let me know and I’ll get them and Express Post them to you – very cheap from the local dance store.

If interested, just send me her height and weight stats. You’ve got my e-mail.

I’ve had a few ah-ha moments as a Parent, where I finally understood what MY parents meant when they said some (to my kid-ly ears) crazy shit.

I didn’t want her to quit but I also don’t want to listen to the whining every Wednesday so horseback riding it is. I have to admit, I will really miss dance. I loved our studio and she was so good. Ug, now I am second guessing myself!
