the shit always hits the fan.

i speak the truth. trust me. it happened here. and here. it’s like they have a freakish sixth sense that when i’m alone and at my most vulnerable…hmm, mommy, now’s a good time for us to get sick! huzzah! and they don’t even take any sort of pity on me even though i let them have extra treats and let them stay up extra late to watch Jumanji. i mean, come on! i’m an extra special sort of pushover when i’m single-mommying it.

and yet.

last night i get a call from the vet. Indy’s red blood cells are low. she’s not OVERLY concerned, and she could totally read the complete and total shitfuck panic in my voice and reassured me that she just wanted to take some more blood and worst-case scenario he’d have to take a steroid.

(not cancer, ali)

at 10pm, Emily bounced into my room wanting to read lines from Mamma Mia. She is determined to get a primo part in this production…

i took Indy out at about 11:30 because i wanted him to sleep through the night.

having a puppy is a little like having a newborn again, i mean, without the sore nipples and the delicious baby smell (seriously, y’all…dogs can be STINKY. especially considered that Indy’s toothpaste is poultry flavored). they cry sometimes, little pathetic newborn cries. you have to feed them, bathe them, take care of their poop. you have to babyproof your house. people tell you that your puppy isn’t dressed warmly enough (i am still undecided about the puppy sweater…) and give you a lot of unsolicited advice. and you try to push off their bedtime so they sleep in…(hello, tell me i’m not the only one who kept her baby up until midnight to get a good solid 12-6 night’s sleep?)

so, i went to sleep at around 12. then at 2, josh came in claiming he was having a nightmare

(now before you get all judge-y mcjudgerson on me…it’s NOT from watching Jumanji. dude has seen the movie at least 87 times. it doesn’t scare him. well, i mean, not any more than watching a prepubescent Kirsten Dunst prance around in overalls and braids scares me.)

(maybe he was having nightmares about Mamma Mia…)

and then Isabella came in wheezing at 4. she has athsma, so this happens from time to time. and by time to time, i mean every single time her daddy is out of town.

and then she came back at around 6:30, demanding to watch Diego and have some chocolate milk. this, of course, woke up Indy, who i then took out in the -30 degree weather for his morning poop. success.

and then, 20 minutes before i had to leave for the vet, Indy decided to barf on my cream-colored carpet. fancy.

so, here i sit.

worried about my poor puppy

thinking some retail therapy is in order. and NOT to get Indiana a sweater…

or at the very least, a tube of cookie dough needs to GET IN MA BELLY!! (fuck you, Jillian Michaels! i will eat it if i want to…your 30-day shred doesn’t include being a single mom with 3, better make that 4, children, does it? i don’t think so!)

where’s my dad and his Starbucks morning delivery service when i need him???

  1. we had the exact same issue with our kitten. it ended up being a LAB ERROR because her red blood cells were not sticking to the slide that they’d then put under the microscope, therefore making it look like she had fewer RBCs.
I am by no means trying to deny you your retail therapy (go for it), but am just trying to reassure you that most likely Indy is fine!!

  2. hope puppy is ok .. why did the vet decide to do a blood test in the first place? Welcome to dog-ownership .. ka-ching ka-ching!!
hope you get relief … and your hubby is coming home soon!
Yeah for Emily and practicing for her part – wish her good luck .. how exciting!!!

  3. Sean just returned from a 6 day work trip to Chicago.
I feel for you. Eva decided to sprout her last molar while he was away (aka no sleep at night).
And your post today reassures me that our decision to never get a pet is a sound one.
    Hope Indy is okay!

  8. I think puppies are MUCH more work than newborns. I’d rather go through all the sleepless nights again than handle a small puppy. I’ve been watching a lot of Jumanji lately as well. My son just discovered it. I can’t tell you how much Kiki ruins that movie for me.

Also? Mama Mia gives me nightmares.

  12. I hope Indy is ok.

When I’m single parenting it, my youngest son tends to develop a semi-serious case of constipation because he prefers his dad to come in and ‘check’ to make sure the job is done. I’m strangely OK with this, and know that if we had a dog, this same routine wouldn’t be in place.

(sorta jealous about the Mama Mia thing, though…:))

  13. I am single parenting it today, so solidarity sistah. I give you full permission to obtain lots of retail therapy STAT. Hope puppy is doing better now (or at least, less stainy).

  14. I’m going all delurking crazy this week! ‘Cause my husband travels alot & leaves me with the 3 kids, 3 cats, 1 dog, 5 fish & 3 sea monkeys – there is *always* vomit (kitty & 7 yr old this week), ER visits (hives) and we added a broken filling for variety this week. Always happens when he travels. All the little beasts, they know!

  16. So I can’t really say anything about the kids thing since I don’t have any, but I can definately relate to the dog thing. At the beginning of winter break before I came home my mom was puppy sitting my sister’s dog. She is a skinny little dog and we had to put a sweater on her because she doesn’t like going out in the cold and only will go out when she really really has to go to the bathroom. Also, when i’m home on days when I go out and get home around like midnight/1ish I always let my two dogs out of my moms room to go to the bathroom so that they sleep late.

  17. Hugs…for you and Indiana. I hope you’re okay. It’s hard when they’re sick. He’ll be okay. Good thing they caught what the issue is and can treat him. Sorry your night was hell, too. Welcome to my world after-dark….

  18. And that’s why I don’t want a puppy. Awful cute, awful lot of work!

I hope Emily gets a good part, too. She’d have a blast!

  20. As much as I want a dog, I don’t think I could handle it. Cats do not need to go out and I can leave them alone for days.

Also, that Starbucks photo made me weep. Because of my heatburn issues, I cannot have coffee for SIX WEEKS! SOB!

  21. My god, woman! Things are insane over there. My fingers are crossed that your wee pup is okay.

I shuddered just the tiniest bit when I saw the words “Mama Mia”. Thanks to Elliot, I have watched that movie approximately a billion times in the last week. Save me!

Dogs ARE TOTALLY CHILDREN – I know mine is. Also, yup, kids know exactly when the worst time to be sick is, lol.

  24. My dog was an unexpected gift from my grandparents and nearly killed me in vet bills within her first year of life. Ah, pet ownership, so much fun, but so damn expensive.

I guess it’s good prep for a baby.

  28. OK, seriously, I have never had a newborn but when Iggy was a puppy we did not sleep, EVER, for the first week and it was horrible. I know being a momma is harder x infinity, but we were looking at ourselves like “What have we DONE?” Thankfully that passed and he now sleeps more than we do, always.

(I hope your pooch is OK! Keep us posted, yo.)
