January 23 08

Our phone is slightly possessed and gives us a little double ring when it’s a long distance or a telemarketing call. i appreciate this, actually. if it’s an area code i don’t recognize, i don’t pick up.

because i have issues. i can’t just hang up. and i can’t just jump in mid-scripted-shpiel and cut them off at the pass. oh no, i have to listen to them rant about my free geoholiday vacation or how i really do need my air ducts checked and oh, it’s very important that i subscribe to the Toronto Star. I let them get to the end of their rant, and then hang up. i told you i have issues.

so, last night the husband picks up the 604 phone call, even though i knew it was no one that we knew, but he insisted and when they asked for me, he told them i wasn’t there. she called back a second time and said she was from Canada Immigration. fuck. these are NOT the type of people that you want to start messing with. have you ever seen a canadian immigration officer? hearts made of stone, i tell you.

so, she was already suspicious. and she was calling to tell me that my nanny was waiting, in Vancouver, to be picked up. um, hello? excuse me? my nanny is downstairs, thankyouverymuch.

apparently, the nannywhore Rakela, who totally screwed me over when i got nanny poached, has been using MY name to bring nannies into Canada. i know, right? what. the. fuck.

so, i ranted. to this poor immigration officer. i told her all about Rakela and how she skipped town when my nanny walked out on me and left me in the lurch. i ranted about how Rakela is a total pimp. and she’s definitely doing something shady.

and so, when i got off the phone, you know that immigration officer is writing on her blog… fuck. these are NOT the type of moms that you want to start messing with. have you ever seen a canadian mom? hearts made of stone, i tell you.

ahaha. Jesus, they should give me a badge or something…

he was too young. and i am a little bit broken today.

i want to thank you for all of your book suggestions. as per many of your recommendations, I started reading Atonement last night. I figure before i fall in love with Jodi Picoult, i better get a jump start on the book version of Atonement before i watch the movie version, which has to be done before the Oscars. you see, it’s all very thought out…

  1. Good lord! That is terrible! NEVER mess with immigration folks. What happens next- are you trying to contact your nanny poacher? This is one of those stories that even though I don’t personally know you I told some other folks (new blog readers for you now!)

  2. What is it with Immigration officers anyway? Are they required to be complete arses 98.9% of the time? Though I gotta tell ya, the Canadians were a lot nicer than the American ones we encountered while getting my Canadian down here. Still, they all strike the fear of God into you with so much as a cross-eyed look. Way to go sick them on someone else! ha!

  6. OMG with using your name! I don’t even know what to say to that except… OMG. Some people have some serious nerve.

As for Heath Ledger… sad, shocking, and far too young. I keep hearing the media types say that it appears to be an accident, and somehow that just makes me feel worse.

  7. That is insane! So, do they have something in the immigration system now that says you’re not bringing 20 nannies into the country every month?

(And really, wouldn’t you think SOMEONE would catch on that you keep going through nannies like tissues?)

  8. Can you get on a do not call list, we did and we hardly get any of those calls anymore.

I had a friend from NYC call me and give me the news. I am very sad too, he was the one person I wanted to see when I was there last week.:(

  16. 1) seriously sad about Heath, he was my “if i could be with a famous guy” freebie winner. You know, when you and your mate list ONE famous person that it would be ok for them to be with once because it is sooo farfetched! Well, now mine is shot to sh!t.

2)I can’t be mean to telemarketers either, my mom is vicious and I always feel so bad but I think the day will come when I have had enough.

    3) Nanny pimp! Woah.

  25. Oh…I have read most of Jodi Picoult’s work. Don’t read her latest, which is very shallow in my opinion. My 14 year old daughter has now gotten on the Picoult bandwagon and she wrote a brilliant review of The Pact on my blog. (To find it easily, go to categories and click on Book Reviews.)

  26. Oh boy – that certainly makes me think twice about getting a nanny. We moved into a 4 br house in May so that we would have the potential to have a live-in nanny… Now I’m thinking it oculd be a br for a 3rd baby instead.

PS – I voted for ya!

  27. You have a steady nerves though! I always recommend parents try to avoid hiring nannies for infants and toddlers as far as possible. Children need parents! Do not forget about that!
