June 2 10

So, I’m a board game kind of girl, have always been. I mean, I can remember playing games against myself because my older siblings didn’t have much time for me and my younger sibling is 7 years younger than I am, so, teaching a toddler strategy was, kind of, well, pointless.  Cut to when I became a wife. I was really excited to have a husband of my very own who would live by the “happy wife, happy life” mantra and who would never say no when I felt like healthy competition playing games. Only he kind of hates games and I was all “who in the hell did I marry?” But then we went to Nashville and my brother and sister-in-law forced us to play this game with them and we were all confused by this Oregon Trail meets Dungeons and Dragons game. Only now, we are kind of obsessed. We have taught our two oldest to play, so, you know, we have people to beat play with. And we have goddamed Settlers of Catan iphone apps. And now I’m hoping someone will make me Cookies of Catan.

WHO ARE WE?

Speaking of things that make me go hmm…

When did this child get this gorgeous van der Woodsen (HT @Metalia) hair?

I mean, she was cue-ball bald for at least the first two years of her life and last year at this time, at nearly 4, she still only had a wee bit.

[insert clever segue into third ponderable here]

Can we please talk about the craze that’s sweeping the nation….you know, the one where adults want to dress like Chloe Sevigny Juliette Lewis toddlers? I mean, it’s a super powerful one. Some of the loveliest people I know are losing this battle. You guys, some of the people who are under the romper spell are people who always look good. I mean, hell, even my sister made me try one on, but that was mostly just for shits and giggles. There were lots of giggles. Especially when I called it a ONESIE. And I pondered how you’d pee in such a thing.

Weren’t rompers designed for children to have a roomy, easy article of clothing to play in?  I mean, honestly, even the word turns me off. ROMPER. They are for romping around in. I don’t find that I do much romping these days.

(I have a sneaking suspicion that Tom Cruise and Xenu have something to do with this somehow.)

(I wonder if Katie and Suri have matching rompers.)

(I bet they do.)

So, what have we learned today, people?

This? CUTE.

This? NOT SO MUCH.

  1. Did you have an Ali you rooted for?

I so share your first pondering! I too love board games. When I was young, if I was sick, my poor mom would spend the entire day playing games with me (I never slept). But, for the rest of the time, as an only child, I would often play board games myself. I always picked a “Hilary” I wanted to win….after all, what fun was it if there wasn’t any competition. My husband’s brother was so competitive as a child he ruined games for both my husband & their sister. Now, even though my husband likes backgammon (the only game I have a shot of playing with him), I have to beg him to play. We end up only playing once or twice a year. And, I always try to let him win, thinking he may want to play more….

  2. I wonder if the adult romper has the little snappy things on the bottom for ease in peeing? Or if not, added room so that one might hide an adult diaper for use in desperate situations?

If so, I could see how it might be a useful outfit for hiding a poochy belly. (Although it’d be far more acceptable if it were in a fabric that didn’t look so much like it had been upchucked on.)

  3. I don’t know – I think some people can pull off the romper look.

  4. Wow – Serena would be proud. But seriously, what are you feeding that girl? Because I want some!

And rompers? No. Just no. There were so many seemingly cute dresses RUINED at Anthropologie with that little freaking stitch in the crotch.

  5. Adult rompers are the new fanny packs.

  6. I just saw Isabella a month ago and her hair looks like it has grown 10 inches! (That’s a great photo of her and Gabe!)

My stepmom wore a floral romper recently and I was all “no, just no.” They just aren’t cute! And really who wants to COMPLETELY undress to take a piss?

  7. That game looks intersting, must check it out.

    And no to rompers.

  8. There was been WAY too many times in the past couple months that I’ve been in a store and said, “Cute blouse!” then picked the item up only to find that it’s a romper. I don’t find them cute, and even if I did, I’d never wear them because I’d probably just wait too long to go to the ladies room while wearing one and then end up with a big problem.

  14. I think after say age five rompers should go away. Maybe two.

Someone posted a picture or link of a romper for pregnant women. There is so much wrong with that, I don’t even know where to start.

  16. We lived in an apartment with 5 other guys when we returned to NY until we found our own place, and they were OBSESSED with Settlers of Catan. Nobody ever bothered to explain it to me, and I have to say, as an onlooker, it’s completely unintuitive and impossible to follow if you don’t know exactly what’s going on. All I know is that everyone is yelling “I’ll trade you two sheep for one clay!!!” at each other.

  19. If ever I graffited or damaged the clothing of a random stranger, it would be a person wearing a romper. I’m just certain of it. They are fucking onesies. for serious.

  20. I don’t know if you ever read my blog but we are so majorly addicted to that game. We were introduced about a year ago and can’t stop. We even made Settlers shalach manot(sheep cookies…mmmm). I am going to HIGHLY recommend you get your hands on the Cities and Knights game which is an extension. It will take your addiction to a whole new level! Happy settling!

  21. Even worse than the adult romper… when I was little and my mom still worked in an office setting (meaning she was the VP only because my dad was Owner/CEO/President of a company) she had this pantsuit thing. It was a sort of grey/purple/puce color and it was one piece long pants (with pleats!) and long sleeve button up shirt topped off with a black patent leather belt. It was fugly… and how the hell do you pee without dipping a long sleeve into the toilet or even keeping all the parts off the public bathroom floor…
