April 9 12

I really should just stop traveling altogether, I think.

We had packed up about 17 suitcases. We had three ipod touches. We had one ipad. We had three pillows. We had drinks and snacks. Three kids had pottied.

AND THEN.

Great start to the Martell family road trip: DEAD VAN BATTERY.#GriswoldVacation

And this is how I feel about that.

Only, because we are slightly family-friendly over here, you get the wrong finger.

The other finger was all, “WHAT ON EARTH, YOU STUPID MINIVAN! I HATE YOU GET OUT OF MY LIFE AND NEVER COME BACK AND YOU CAN KEEP ALL YOUR CDS!”

Truth be told, our van in on its last legs and it will have to be replaced sooner-rather-than-later. (See: this summer, when we are done making tuition payments). It has given us many, many years and has allowed us to travel to Wisconsin and Georgia and South Carolina and Nashville. It allowed me to have three kids in cars eats and not break any major organs trying to get them in and out. It allowed me to drive carpool and shove several other children into the back.

But frankly, I am done with it.

And frankly, it is done with me.

We are breaking up, stupid Dodge Grand Caravan.

If I know one thing, it’s that toxic relationships are not worth it.

So, I have been cheating on my van of late…checking out the Acadia and Traverse. I window-shopped the entire ten-hour drive to Wisconsin, especially after we hit, oh, um, somewhere in the middle of Michigan and we realized that our built-in DVD player was totally and completely busted.

Our excited-to-watch-old-episodes-of-the-Muppet-Show children were less than thrilled.

Hey, wanna see that finger again, Dodge?

But, thankfully, our battery managed to get us all here in one piece, to spend a loooooooong Passover week with my family. But I’m warning you now, oh van of mine, if we can’t make it to Target this morning and to the zoo this afternoon, WE ARE COMPLETELY THROUGH.

  1. I’ve gotten to do a bunch of social media work with GM and recently got a week long test drive in the Traverse. I really liked it, but it has a spiffy interior redesign coming up up in the 2013 model, as does the Acadia. I really liked how it drove and handled, but compared to the newer interiors of the Equinox and Terrain, if you can hold out for the new models this fall, I’d recommend it…OR if you can wait and you like the current interior I bet there are some amazing deals to be had.

    Happy shopping!

  2. It sounds as if a part of you may be forgiving that van. Don’t do! It can’t be trusted.

  3. Not forgiving…just willing it to make it a few more months so I can afford to replace it. Heh.

  4. Your van has betrayed you. Her time has passed, and she needs to be sent to pasture. I never looked back after chucking mine to the curb and replacing her with the Flexie.

  5. TRUTH.

  6. The feeling right before you start the car knowing that it may not start is the WORST.

  8. This is going to happen to me soon. My car is 13 years old with 158,000 miles on it. It is just a matter of time before it shits the bed.

  10. I have an Acadia and really like it. Actually this is my second one. I bought one on 0% interest back in 09 when my GMC Envoy died. The dealership I prefer didn’t have a ton of them available at the time with the ONE feature I wanted (captains chairs. I HATED my kids climbing over the middle row to get to the back seats) so I got a champagne colored base model – no bells or whistles version. It was fine. Then this past December, hubs told me I should see about “upgrading” to one I actually liked that had some features to it, so I did. I know own a black one with black leather interior and an automatic lift gate.

Is it my dream car? Not even close. But with two girls, it is perfect for field trips, soccer practices, and hauling them and their friends around town. It drives nice too. Only downside I have is not enough lighter plugs in the front (I would have preferred two – there is only one)and the space in front of the middle seats where cereal or m&ms seem to always fall into.

    Good Luck~

  11. Check out the Ford Flex and Explorer as well – great cars, lots of room. 🙂

Sorry for your bad start – hope the rest of the trip goes better! 🙂

  12. Ali, I have an AMAZING story about a Dodge Caravan giving up on our family on Christmas Day on a trip to Florida. But it is waaayy too long and I will hijack your comments so I am just going to email you. Also because to this day I am still embarrassed by the story.

  13. Then it’s time to pack her off the happy vanning grounds and get yourself some fresh van-meat.
Here’s hoping there is plenty of battery to get Target and the Zoo, and home. Crossing my fingers for you…

  14. I feel your pain. I am in love with my 2002 Chevy Venture, but lately it does not love me back. I am holding out for the new Honda Odyssey which I can not afford anytime soon…I think she knows I am also cheating on her and she’s very very angry!!!
