I don’t often let my children bake with me. Truth be told, it ends being up a lot more work that I originally anticipate and then I get frustrated and they get frustrated and really they don’t actually want to participate…they just really want to lick the spoons/bowl/beater/spatulas. But occasionally, I forget. And it will be a quiet weekend around our house and I will be craving something really bad and then I will decide that I absolutely need to have cinnamon buns right that very second or the whole world is going to come to and end and we must not let that happen so we better make sure we have some yeast and get to the store to stock up on cream cheese and haul out the kitchen aid mixer because the Martells are going to town!!!

So, by the time we were finished with them, um, possibly four-hour process, we were all covered in flour. In fact, I am pretty sure the entire kitchen was covered in flour. There were hours worth of dishes piled up in the sink. There was screaming and yelling and fighting and kicking and crying (I was doing most of the crying. Heh)

but the end product…oh my god, you guys, the end product! It was amazing and ooey and gooey and ohsoworthit.

Baking with your kids is like labor. They purposely make the food so delicious in the end that you forget how painful the process can be…and when you have a hankering for something delicious, you let the kids join in. And they love it. And truthfully, you kind of love it too.

So, hey, want to win a $100 VISA gift card? Leave a comment (by 10pm EST on Monday night, October 4th) and tell me what you make that is OHSOWORTHIT.  Or, if you don’t bake…what you buy that is OHSOWORTHIT. For an extra entry you can tweet about this contest and then come back here and link to your tweet!

  1. OHSOWORTHIT … my family’s recipe for pasteles. An entire day of preparation, cooking, and assembly with about 4 people helping. They end up being a holiday treat because they are so labor-intensive.

If I have a craving, I’ll go to the store and get the Pillsbury ones, which are good in a pinch.

  7. Homemade jam. Strawberry, plum, peach, blueberry, I DON’T CARE, it is just SO worth the hours of steaming away over a hot stove, to see all those jars lined up in my larder.

And no, my name is not Martha!

  8. This sounds ridiculous considering I’ve been a grown-up for a while now, but I’m just learning to cook. So far, everyone’s favourite thing is banana bread. It only takes about 20 minutes prep. and an hour in the oven, though – does that count?

Comment by Jessica on September 28, 2010
  9. Vegetarian lasagna..I don’t know why it takes me so long every time, but it’s awesome.

  10. It would definitely have to be gazpacho. I know, I know, cold tomato soup just sounds hurl-worthy, but it’s so delicious! Especially when all the ingredients come from your garden and it’s all fresh and zingy. Man…now I’m going to have to make it for dinner!

  11. OMG, those cinnamon buns look absolutely delicious! Please send the recipe!

What I’ve been trying to do every year now is bake my daughter’s birthday themed cake myself every year and as much as it is stressful, in the end it makes me happy that I’ve made her Birthday extra special with my own hands.

Comment by AnnaO on September 29, 2010
  20. Oliebollen – Dutch fried dough — think Beignet/Funnel Cake/Donut… with powdered sugar and (in our house) raisins. Such a big deal, but so worth it around the holidays.

Comment by Darcey on September 30, 2010
  21. We usually have oatmeal during the week but on a weekend my 4 y.o. son and I make a simple breakfast bread with raisins, candied ginger, and pineapple. He measures the flour very carefully and reminds me to put in the baking powder and a pinch of salt. He always begs for a taste of sugar (which I always decline). He also gets to mix- his favorite part. He also loves to grease the bread pan and most of all he loves to lick the spoon afterwards. The only thing is he can never wait for it to bake or cool down- he is ready to eat as soon as it gets in the oven. Breakfast bread is OSOWORTHIT!

  71. Those cinnamon buns look delicious!
Sometimes we make cinnamon rolls using crescent rolls wrapped around big marshmallows that have been rolled in melted butter then in cinnamon & sugar. We bake them until the marshmallows melt and the rolls are golden. They are great! It is a fool-proof recipe.
When we make potstickers (not for breakfast), it is OHSOWORTHIT! I make the filling myself (usually diced pork, green onions, and honey), then we set up an assembly line so the kids can stuff the wrappers and seal them (we usually use a potsticker press). Then, I fry/steam them. They are a lot of trouble, but the are the best I’ve ever had–which makes them OHSOWORTHIT!
