It’s a good thing I’m a quick reader, because, otherwise, I would be asking for the time I spent reading Something Borrowed back. Because I finished it in about 3 days of subway travel, I feel less guilty about polluting my mind with such crap. And it’s not that every once in a while I don’t enjoy a good mindless piece of chicklit; I do. I mean, I typically gravitate towards the same kind of novel…historical fiction, with an emphasis on anything that takes place during any time of war in any country. But sometimes I am all over a Bridget Jones or a Jennier Weiner or even one of those Shopaholic numbers. Sometimes, especially during a busy commute, it’s needed. But I don’t know. This one…was…not…good. Maybe it’s because not one of the characters was even mildly likable. Maybe it’s because there was no one I was rooting for, and I do enjoy rooting for a protagonist who always sees herself as less worthy than others. It’s that always the way with rom-coms? The plain girl is never as plain as she thinks! And just wait until the movie is out (WAIT. Is the movie already out?) Ginnifer Goodwin will pretty much reprise the role she played in He’s Just Not That Into You (that’s what that horrible movie was called, right?) and lalalala! she comes out on top. So, I probably won’t see the movie, even though I like Ginnifer Goodwin, but I prefer her a little more sister wife-esque.

And speaking of sister wives…that is what I am reading about now. The 19th wife, that already, in the first 25 pages, has more potential than Something Borrowed did in the entire novel. I’d much rather read about polygamy and pinafores and long braids than partying in the Hamptons in uncomfortable shoes and skirts that are too short. I see enough of that on the subway.

Like, just this week, I got to hear about the girl whose boobs needed more coverage and her latest conquests at work. But, lest her friend, the girl with the greasy hair worry for her friend, they are only screwing…not getting serious. (Note to self: Write novel. Title it The Girl Whose Boobs Need More Coverage. Follow it up with an award-winning sequel, The Girl with the Greasy Hair.) I guess showing up to work with an almost Pippa Middleton PIP SLIP situation has benefits. I also got to observe the three amazon women discussing their identical black short tight skirts.

Amazon #1: Do you think my skirt is short enough to make a good impression?

Amazon #2: I don’t know. Bend over. If I can see your ass, then you’re good.

Amazon #1: Thanks. You are such a good friend.

Amazon #3 silently sips her Booster Juice.

People are awesome on the subway.

They are also awesome off of the subway. They hork and spit on the sidewalk. They yell out of their car windows at me. They talk to themselves. They sleep on the sidewalk. They call me “white bread,” whatever the heck that means….

Sometimes I feel like giving them a piece of my mind…or maybe giving them my copy of Something Borrowed. Because I sure as heck don’t want it.

(Also. Please to send along your book recommendations! I am a reading fool these days and would love some suggestions for good subway reading.)

  1. I love it when you post about books you are reading or have read. You should do that more often, I’m running out of stuff to read.

Envy your opportunity to read everyday on the subway.

  2. I have recently read and loved:

    My name is Mary Sutter
    The Heretic’s Daughter
    Little Bee.

    Love them all!

  3. I liked Something Blue better. Love the English bloke. And yes the movie has been out, with some bad reviews. Exactly what you said, no likable characters.

  4. But Something Blue is about Darcy, right? See…and I HATED her in Something Borrowed. Does she become more likable?

Comment by ali on May 13, 2011
  5. Yes of course she becomes more likable, but some say it was too obvious and too fast to totally change like that. I don’t know, I enjoyed it though, not so much the first one. Just a quick light beach read.

  6. I loved The 19th Wife. I know I read Something Borrowed, but even after seeing the movie previews I don’t remember it at all.

  7. That’s exactly my situation… I read it, but I’ll be damned if I can remember anything except that I hated it.

I no longer recommend books to my friends because they love that sort of book, and I can’t really enjoy anything unless it’s dark and twisted. Give me a little self-loathing over primadonnas any day.

  8. I’m reading The Island by Elin Hilderbrand and really enjoying it. As for those chick lit authors you mentioned, Remember Me by Sophie Kinsella was laugh out loud funny.

  9. I loved The Island, I love all her books really but particularly that one. Those are great to read in the summer.

  10. I’m dying to know what they call you…

  11. I’m assuming this is a troll-y comment, based on the fake email address…BUT…if you are asking what people on the subway would call me…

    I’d say:

Short girl who looks out of place. Carries too many bags and people watches too much. Never has an umbrella.

Comment by ali on May 13, 2011
  12. Nope, not trying to troll at all. I should have explained myself.

The last line of the post reads: They call me ”

There’s no quote there to read.

    The email’s real.

  13. GAH! Thank you! My post got totally cut off. Now I have to find it!

  14. You’ve somehow made me jealous of your subway riding. 🙂

I love, love, loved The 19th Wife. Excellent story and character building.

When I read about you liking books where you could root for a protagonist who feels less worthy, my first thought was of a book I just read called “When We Were Friends.” I loved it, really engaging and thought provoking, and the protagonist is the type who could’ve really become something if she just started to believe in herself. (It’s more of a mainstream novel with a touch of mystery than chick lit, though.)

  15. I am so glad someone else didn’t like it. I could barely stand to finish it.

  16. I’m in need of new reading material, so I’m no help, but I love your subway stories.

  17. I read Something Borrowed last week, and you are absolutely right. Total suckage. From the first few pages, it was just a disgusting mess of the worst people you’d never want to bother meeting.

If you’re looking for something quick and fluffy for the subway, “Remember Me?” and “Twenties Girl”, still by Sophie Kinsella, are better than the Shopoholic books.

I’m definitely looking forward to reading The 19th Wife. There’s a film version that was on a few weeks ago that I didn’t get to watch all of. i didn’t realise it was a book, so yay!

  18. Will you hate me if I tell you that I actually liked that He’s Just Not That Into You movie? I did. *hangs head in shame*

Well, the last book I read was Hypnobirthing, and I don’t think that’s the kind of book you’re going for, so …

  19. I’m really enjoying your subway tales. 🙂

I just read Something Borrowed two weeks ago. I was very glad I checked it out of the library and not actually paid money for it. I read it because the movie looked ok, but now I don’t know if I want to see it at all.

My recent reads were Two Kisses for Maddy by Matt Logelin, and I read the first two books in the Wicked Lovely series by Melissa Marr.
