yesterday i had the pleasure of interviewing the highly pocketable Bruce McDonald, director of many things, but notably of the soon-to-be-released Ellen Page movie, The Tracey Fragments. come on, look at him, don’t you just want to scoop both him and Ellen Page up into your pocket and take them home and cook them dinner? what? just me?

This time, not like when i interviewed Christopher Bolton, my ancient recorder was working, so i was able to get it all on tape. (and holy of holies, what did i find? i. am. so. canadian. i really didn’t think i sounded Canadian at all, since i don’t say sore-ey. but i do, i really do)

anyway, please come and check out the whole interview here. it’s worth it. i swear. we started, of course, asking him about his underwear (i guess it’s kind of my thing now…i guess it could be worse, eh?). for the record, he wears briefs. and we ended with talking about our favorite music movies. He wants to do one…with a possible robot woman who gets her masters and then runs away to join a band. awe.some. see? pocketable!

he asked me what my favorite musical movie was and..well, let’s just say there were *crickets* many, many crickets. i embarrassingly admitted that i have never seen Saturday Night Fever (there are pop culture holes. many of them) and that i LOVE LOVE LOVED Moulin Rouge and how i pleasantly surprised by how good the Beatles covers were in Across the Universe.

of course i forgot to mention Hair, a movie and soundtrack that WAS my youth. my mother used to play it for us in the car. on cassette. back in the olden days.

i forgot to mention Singing in the Rain. and Fiddler on the Roof. West Side Story. and Little Shop of Horrors. and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. and Swing Kids. and Sound of Music. and Grease. and Dirty Dancing. and FOOTLOOSE! and, um, who can forget The Muppet Movie. i mean, come on, how could i forget that?!?!?

what about you? favorite musical movie?

  5. Favorite musical musical…Les Miserables (seen it four times) and Phantom of the Opera (about nine times) and Rent (three)…as for musical-cum-movie, Phantom as well probably and…hmm, can’t say I actually like any of the musicals that have turned into movie! E.g. Hairspray on Broadway was a million times better than the flick!

Did you catch a glimpse of Ellen Page while there????

  7. ‘Fiddler on the Roof’! Everything about it: the music, the location, the characters, the relationships. I first watched it as a child, and then as a teenager struggling to leave home with a boy my parents didn’t approve of, and then again as a parent OF a daughter. It’s just rung so true for me in different ways throughout my life.

  10. I’m a total musical nerd so I have many favorites. I guess my top three (in no particular order) would be Grease, Showboat, and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.

And seriously, he just looks like a teddy bear who needs to be squeezed.

  11. I have to pick just one?!?! The first one to jump to mind is “Oklahoma”. I’m anxiously awaiting the film version of “Mama Mia” because I’m sure that’s going to be up there on my favorites list also. Just about every musical that anyone has listed so far is a musical that I would willingly sit and watch over and over and over. Don’t forget about “Rent”, and any Gene Kelly or Fred Astaire film.

  37. Ok, I’m going to do it. I love “The Music Man” and I hate “Rent”. That might be all you need to know about me.

But wait, there’s more! I love the Music Man for the barbershop blends; I hate Rent because I hate most of the characters in it.

I love the Music Man because it was a musical about small town America in 1912 written from a post-war perspective. I hate Rent because the songs, quite appropriately I think, sound like they are written by 20-somethings who want to impose their all-encompassing perspective on the world. That’s a truth about 20-somethings, but it’s also a truth that I can’t stand most 20-somethings anymore. I wonder if I ever could. And I felt this way when I was a twenty-something myself.

Blah blah blah….just shutup BPD. Nobody cares that you don’t like Rent.

  40. Well, I LOVE musicals, so it’s really hard to choose. I’d have to say it’s a toss up between Moulin Rouge and Strictly Ballroom. OF COURSE, I love Hair, but it’s really about the music. The movie itself can be a little boring. OH! And Jesus Christ Superstar! And Godspell! (Can you tell I love 70’s Rock Musicals, or what?)
