first things first…Dorothy had a burial at sea last night. it was a traumatizing experience all around. there were tears, mine included. Emily wasn’t even able to stay in the bathroom during the entire service. and Josh didn’t break down until later when he burst into tears and a certainly overdramatic “i want Dorothy to live!!!!” We lost our first pet this week. and it’s taught me one very important lesson. there’s no way we could handle a dog. or a cat.

today we have a potluck lunch at work. we have these every so often when someone’s getting married or having a baby or leaving. They are always a little bit awkward and uncomfortable. At least this time i’m not on the South Beach diet…

I signed up to bring something dessert-y. and i had full intentions to bake chocolate chip cookies last night. but, i was downtown at the Eaton Centre trying on clothes with Jen and Katie (the style guru) from Urbanmoms. (a little side note…Katie is British. i had no idea. i was so completely thrown off. almost as much as i was when i found out that House was British…mmm…House…) Yessiree. i’m going to be a “Mom Model” at the Urbanmoms gala.

anyway, back to the reason why i didn’t bake. oh, yes, and then i got home, sent my fish to a better place (“all drains lead to the ocean!”), consoled my sad kids, and worked on a rush blanket order for a baby named Raen. has anyone ever heard of this name before? spelled this way? for a boy???

so…i didn’t bake. so, i used some good old fashioned ingenuity and figured i’d stop at Loblaws on my way in to work this morning. only one small little snag. doesn’t open until 8. bah. so, i ended up in the Tim Hortons drive-thru. (which is no surprise, since i find myself there every day anyway) and i bought timbits and cookies.

how’s that for ingenuity? who doesn’t like donuts?

okay…i know i said i wasn’t going to talk about Survivor, since it’s quite possibly the worst.season.ever. of this show…but i do have a question. on the last episode, i believe it was two weeks ago, they showed a clip of what we thought was a sea snake shedding its skin. what, in fact, it looks like is a sea snake throwing up another sea snake. the husband and i watched the scene about 45 times trying to figure out what we were watching. it was like a train wreck. and it wasn’t just us! Becca‘s husband Jason said the same. exact. thing!

so, i’ve now got video. decide for yourself.

American Idol – Top 11. it’s British Invasion night. and Paula is drunk again and her voice cracks like a teenager in heat. Ryan makes a fool out of himself on stage and i just want to put him in my pocket. Sanjaya makes a little girl cry.

the good:

Lakisha – girl can sing, even if tonight was slightly on the boring side. she should take some risks…since she CAN.

Melinda – what’s there to say. amazing.

Jordin – i want her to win this thing. she’s great.

Blake – i’m finding Blake incredibly sexy. and he’s got a good voice too. but mostly he’s sexy.

Chris R. – definitely his best yet. maybe it’s because he wasn’t doing any of that headbopping.

Chris S. – i love this song. from the beautiful girls soundtrack. great choice. loved it!

Hayley – she gets the slutty vote. as the only eye candy in the top 11, and one of the weakest voices, she uses what she’s got. and Simon’s right. it will keep her in the competition. at least another few weeks.

the meh:

Gina – STOP. SHOUTING. GINA.

Phil – was that sweat on his shirt???? it was really hard to concentrate on his singing since i was zeroed in on the shirt…but at least i wasn’t paying attention to the ears this week!

the bad:

Sanjaya – yes, better than he’s been. but, all in all, i thought it was horrific. and the creep factor was way, way high.

Stephanie – she can’t compete with Lakisha and Melinda. she just can’t.

bottom three? Sanjaya, Stephanie, Phil. going home? should be Sanjaya…but i’m guessing Phil

  1. It isn’t shedding its skin. If you look closely at the video, there are two indicators that it isn’t shedding: one, the mucus that hangs on after the “item” has left (shedding is generally not accompanied by so much liquid) and two, the item is exiting the mouth whereas shedding is a peeling back of the skin above the mouth, generally.

According to a little research I did, snakes do regurgitate if threatened since it allows them to move more quickly (empty belly). Try googling “survivor snake regurgitating” (without the quotes) and see what comes up.

  2. I don’t watch AI, but I am all about a girl getting the slutty vote!

  3. I think Melinda will win this – she could cut an album already. Awesome!
Phil is creepy .. I think Sanjaya showed that he can rock on a bit more, yes, not the strongest vocal and personality – but hey, he made a little girl cry .. AND went out to meet her and give her hug ..gets credit in my books!
Gina is getting worse .. too bad .. I liked her..

Sorry ’bout the buriel .. and you are right .. having the family dog die is way more traumatic than the fish .. my son still blows kisses up to doggie heaven, 1.5 yrs later…:(

  4. Thank god for the President!

  5. We watched that snake a few times too. I thought it was shedding and it was really gross– I didn’t know snakes regurgitated. You learn something new everyday!

Again, I’m sorry about Dorothy. I know that was a rough night at your house.

I love, love, LOVE the Doolittle!

  6. hi ali i don’t watch survivor but i did watch your video.it looks like its regurgitating something.how disgusting!so hope your children are ok with dorothy going back to the ocean.and hey who doesn’t like donuts?

  7. Poor Dorothy. I’d suggest watching flushed away because when the mouse gets flushed away he doesn’t die he just goes to a new city. But, the movie was stupid and traumatized my son. So I don’t know.
If you’re thinking of pets you could get a parrot because they sometimes live longer than humans. By the time that pet died you wouldn’t have to worry about it.

  8. The only good thing about Sanjaya was when he went and hugged that poor little girl. That was sweet. But his 17-year-old self singing and shaking himself to Paula? Uh, eww.

My favorite part of the whole show was when Ryan brought that girl up on stage to hug and meet everyone and for a split second they cut to another girl about that age who was standing next to the stage and she had the fiercest “what about ME?!” scowl on her face.

I really like Melinda but she has to get rid of the “you like me! you REALLY like me!” thing because it’s getting old.

I want to like Gina so much because I love her style but she needs to sing better.

I get too emotionally invested in Idol.

  9. Poor Dorothy. I lost SO many pets in my childhood and I just never got hardened to it – but they say that it’s a good way for children to learn about death. I don’t know who “they” are, but I think they’re mean old sadists.
Blake is SEXY. According to the Dial Idol people, it’s either Haley or Stephanie tonight – but Phil is almost there, too. So who knows?

Comment by Rebecca on March 21, 2007
  10. Okay, I just double-checked the almost-completely accurate dial idol predictions, and here we go –
    1. Melinda
    2. Phil
    3. Blake
    4. Lakisha
    5. Sanjaya
    6. Jordan
    7. Chris R.
    8. Stephanie
    9. Chris S.
    10. Gina
    11. Haley

I can’t quite believe how many votes Sanjaya is getting.

  11. PLEASE, PLEASE tell me that the little girl on Idol was crying because her ears were bleeding and being eaten by her brain?!?!?!?!?!

Comment by FENICLE on March 21, 2007
  12. Sorry about Dorothy. I remember when I was little and I lost my 4-year-old fish. I was hysterical….

I want Jordin to take it home, too! Love her! So funny you say that about Phil’s shirt. I was thinking the same exact thing! So distracting! What the hell was that!?

Can’t wait to see you as a mommy model! Whoohoo!

  15. I don’t know where Josh gets it from…
As a kid I had pet fish, turtles, hamsters etc.
One time my friend kenny and I thought it would be fun to take the goldfish out of the aquarium in the fish net, lift it a couple feet over the tank, and drop it back in. Our version of the goldfish high-dive…
all well & good until we got careless and the goldfish bounced off the back wall of the aquarium and landed behind the 6 drawer dresser…
My mom came to the rescue and the fish lived to tell about it. For the record, said fish was renamed Greg Louganis from that day forward.

  16. I totally thought the same thing when I saw that snake on Survivor. Dave and I were like, WTF?!

Comment by mamatulip on March 21, 2007
  17. I know that Haley (-O)(and me) would be disappointed to see you spell her name HaYley. Shame on you. =P Anyway, SANJAYA. NO MORE. I think this about sums it up: Bye-bye-a Sanjaya

Comment by Haley on March 21, 2007
  18. Sean and I did the same thing!!
…love the ability to rewind live tv. But did nothing to help us figure WTF that snake was doing.

  19. SCANDAL SCANDAL SCANDAL!

“The little crying girl from last night’s “American Idol” has been revealed. She’s 13-year-old Ashley Ferl from Riverside and she was paid to cry for Sanjaya. No! She said she was just so excited to be there. The family won tickets for a taping of “Smarter Than a 5th Grader” on a website. The tickets also included attending the dress rehearsal for Idol. At the dress rehearsal young Ashley turned on the waterworks and producers quickly noticed and asked the family to attend the live taping. I see how it is.

Ashley said she’s rooting for “Sanjaya, Melinda, Gina and Jordin” and would not say who her favorite was.”

  20. Hi,

LOVE your blog’s design. SO very cute and fun. Also, horray for places that have yummy treats so one doesn’t have to bake them! And yes, donuts are always good. 🙂

  21. I haven’t watched Survivor this season…sounds like I’m not missing much. DH and I watched your snake video a few times trying to figure out what the hell it was doing too…it looks like it’s regurgitating another animal. Too gross.
Sorry, don’t watch AI this season.
    You can’t beat Timbits! :p
    Take care.
