Last night we had a bit of a mystery on our hands. A fish-tery, if you will. (Credit where credit is due) I will admit I was a little exhausted from 6th grade meet-the-teacher night and was looking forward to crawling into bed early with a remote in my hand. A new season of Survivor started last night, you know. But instead I had to channel my inner Sherlock Holmes, Columbo, Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys, and the entire cast of Scooby Doo.

Well, jinkies, here’s a thing that can happen: fish can commit suicide.

Ask me how I know.

Last night one of Isabella’s oldest and dearest pet fish leaped to his death. He decided that aquarium life was not for him and he *literally* took all of his energy and flew himself out of the tank and onto the floor in her room. In olympic type moves, apparently, guppies can pull their entire bodies back and then hurtle themselves into the air, jumping up to SEVEN times their body length.

Fish are weird.

And now, lucky me, in addition to a child who is terrified of bears, goats, and sharks, she is now afraid to sleep in her bedroom, lest the rest of the contents of her aquarium decide to mass exodus into her bed during the night.

On the plus side, I’m getting really good at fish eulogies.
