I send my friend Leigh a lot of selfies, but usually I’m making a crazy face, or I have a face full of yesterday’s makeup, or I’m picking my nose, or I’m actually only pretending to take a selfie, but I’m really taking a photo of the man behind me picking his nose. No really.

But last night I sent her a photo.

Selfie

I captioned it: I may not have brushed my hair today, but I feel pretty.

It’s just so easy to send the goofy pics. So much easier. To send her photos of me in a dress that I’m squeezed into and caption it: Got Sausage? To send her photos of the dark circles under my eyes and caption it: Bags for days. Should we go on vacation? To send her photos of my eyebrows and caption it: I blame the ’90s. Where my choker and Doc Martens? To send her a photo of me not being able to figure out how Spanx work and caption it: Should I just invest in a corset? Maybe a tummy tuck would be easier at this point? Why didn’t think some with an instruction manual like IKEA furniture?

It’s so easy to pick myself apart.

It’s not as easy for me to not be self-deprecating. It’s sort of my thing, really.

But I think we should do it more often. Now I’m not saying you need to channel your inner Maria from West Side Story and dance around your bedroom in your underpants singing I Feel Pretty. (I mean, I’m not saying you *shouldn’t* do this, either, because it’s actually quite enjoyable. And then if you are feeling up to it afterwards, you can even throw a little Shake It Off in there too.) But I want to hear what you love about yourself.

No really, tell me.

Do you make amazing banana bread? (I’ll eat it!) Do you plan awesome parties? Are you crafty? Are you a runner? Do you play the violin? Are you amazing at putting on makeup? Are you a great football player? Do you have killer dimples? Seriously. I want to know! You can go back to apologizing and self-deprecating tomorrow, I promise.

Okay, here we go. Here’s a thing about me. I’m really good at puzzles. Like, Rain Man good. In fact, I didn’t realize that other people didn’t do puzzles without looking at the picture on the box.

Also, I make really good mixtapes. Also, I have really good hair. Also, I’m a good storyteller.

Your turn.

  4. I’m really good at changing middle schoolers’ minds about math and I get lots of notes at the end of the year that go something like this: I never liked math until this year and now I love it and want to be a math teacher just like you! (So maybe they exaggerate a tiny bit about wanting to be a math teacher, but those sweet notes are worth so much more than a Starbucks gift card. ??)

  6. I have almond shaped hazel eyes that turn a fantastic green with yellow flecks if I’m wearing a certain color or extremely tired.

I have great arms without looking “body builder” or masculine and all without having to work out…thank God!

I am great at writing letters for others, so much so that once I’m done, I’m mentally and physically exhausted.

  7. I’m good at organising closets – not quite like The Amandas but pretty well.

    Also reusing/repurposing household items.
