I definitely have that thing where you get depressed in the winter. It has a name, right?

YES, I know that it’s been a mild winter (you can stop telling me now no seriously stop) and that we haven’t had a flake of snow related to Jonas. But it’s still winter. I mean, even just putting on tights makes me weepy. My lips chap in the winter, my hair static is award-winning, and my extremities turn pretty permanently purple. Also I really, really miss being able to take photos of people outside where it’s lovely and pretty and green and not winter. Also, it’s dark basically all the time. Also, I’m really bad at cleaning the frost off of my windshield so every morning when I drive Isabella to school I play this little game with my windshield wiper fluid (is it called antifreeze?)— spray, wipe, freeze, spray, wipe, freeze, and I drive slowly, peeking through the tiny space where the antifreeze hasn’t frozen. I promise it’s a lot safer than I’m making it sound.

Also every time I leave the house I make sure to have a pair of gloves so my fingers don’t turn black and fall off like the noses of Everest climbers. And, of course, every time I leave the house and remember to bring my gloves, someone (coughIsabellacough) forgets to make sure she has a pair of gloves and because that’s what parenting is about, I have frozen extremities while Isabella has warm ones. And then she loses them. So this week I filled an entire cart at walmart full of those tiny gloves that are meant for doll hands that are supposed to stretch but don’t really stretch all that much because they cost $1.17 and $200 later, my Mary Poppins sized purse has exactly three things in it: my wallet, my Chap Stick medicated, and 167 pairs of gloves.

Even my dog needs to wear a sweater, you guys.

I guess you could say that winter and I are enemies.

But today I spent most of the day under a blanket with a giant coffee in front of me, and a book in my hands (Hausfrau by Jill Alexander Essbaum, which I am quite obsessed with), and football on the television because it seems that this is the winter sport that I participate in — I don’t ski or skate or play hockey or snowboard or bobsled or curl or anything that normal people who live in cold climates enjoy, likely due to the whole purple fingers and toes thing. So I’m just going to hide under a blanket for a while.

How many days until spring omg?

  1. I feel for you. I am a born and raised Manitoba girl, I have survived over 30 years of -40 winters. I still don’t do winter well. I also work stretches of night shifts so I have to sleep all day. It is much easier to sleep all day in the winter but days of no sunlight really get me down. It is called Seasonal Affective Disorder. I have no idea how people do it in the true North. Oh, and I actually have a countdown on my phone until Spring. 56 days!

  2. SAD, yes!

Oh, and 56 days sounds doable, right?? RIGHT?
