May 25 12

Sometimes back-to-back crappy emails just make you want to go back to bed for the rest of the day.

But, you know, since I have narrowly escaped this whole jet lag thing—mostly due to the fact that I basically kept EST while on the west coast, awake at 5am, asleep at 10pm—I have to do everything in my power to not go back to bed today. Also, there’s that whole post-vacation 14 hours of work to fit into an 8 hour day thing. So, I’m going to put on some pants and a bra and remember that I am awesome and just totally make this Friday my bitch.

It’s so interesting, this pop culture nerd being married to a non-pop culture nerd.

First, there’s the whole “OH MY GOD DO YOU KNOW WHAT HE’S FROM?” game I play every single time I watch anything on the small screen or the big screen. The answer, always, from my husband is, obviously, no. But, of course, it doesn’t stop me  from continuing to play my little game—with myself.

“Oh my god! OHMIGOD! Dr. Sweets is Sam Weir!”

“?”

“Sam Weir? From Freaks and Geeks?”

“?”

“Please tell me you have seen Freaks and Geeks! Please. For the love of all that’s holy!”

“Can I unpause Bones now?”

“Go ahead. But you are really missing out. Freaks and Geeks was a really good show.”

“We have bigger things to figure out. Like, we need to google if that Bones burp was some sort of editing mistake. I mean, SHE CLEARLY BURPED in this scene.”

“Rewind it. Let’s rewatch the burp.”

“It’s definitely a burp.”

“Really? NO FREAKS AND GEEKS? It’s Judd Apatow!”

“Who?”

“You know. He’s married to my girlfriend.”

“Who?”

“Leslie Mann. My god, keep up. SHE IS ON MY LIST.”

“Burp. Clearly.”

Clearly.

Second, there’s the whole random movie and tv quotes being tossed out at all times of the day.

“THERE’S NO BASEMENT AT THE ALAMO!” when I see signs for Alamo rental cars, obviously. What? It was totally appropriate.

“What the?”

“Basement? At the Alamo? Nothing?”

“?”

“How are we even friends? I probably have to tweet about this.”

He doesn’t even get the “I’m breezy!” quote.

Seriously. Who is this man?

At least he loves Mad Men.

And at least he was able to give me a decent answer when I asked him who his favorite TV dad was.

“Not Stephen Keaton. He was a hippie. Oooh. Dr. Seaver. Definitely. Oh! And Mr. Drummond. Or the dad from Silver Spoons.”

Maybe this relationship can be saved after all!

While I’m off saving my relationship by forcing him to love pop culture, please help me with something I am working on for Father’s Day and tell me: WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE TV DAD? (or if you are Canadian, tell me: Who is your favourite TV dad?)

And I just wanted to share some exciting new stuff happening over here. I was hoping to get my buttons up in the sidebar, but, you know how I am with technology and, um, breaking things. So, the buttons aren’t up yet, but I am already up and running. So, you can find me writing about fashion and style over at my new home on the Yummy Mummy Club—From Hemlines to Heels where this week I wrote about my fashion icons, my love of all things nautical (but not boats) and my love of Rachel Berry’s prom dress.

And you can also find me every Tuesday over at MamaPop writing about pop culture. This week I wrote about how to dress like the leading ladies of Mad Men.

  3. I have serious love for Mike from The Middle. Mostly because I love everything about The Middle. But he is just classically male and dadish and hilarious to me!

But if we are going for all-time best TV dad, how can it not be Dr. Huxtable?

  4. Is it less urgent if we’re Canadian? I was pretty fond of Dr. Seaver. Later, it would have to be Luke Danes from the Gilmore girls. Because he was, technically, a dad the whole time even if he didn’t know it, and I love him so he gets a mention. Oooh.. Phil Dunphy. He’s my current favourite.

  5. Haha. I see what you did there. Favorite/favourite. Clever!

I would definitely have to say Dr. Huxtable was the ultimate best TV dad.

  6. Hmmm…. favorite = the dad on Malcolm in the Middle (love that show!!). My dad was a lot closer to Archie Bunker, though, and my mom was pretty much Eunice from the Carol Burnett Show– it’s amazing I’m able to string coherent sentences together). :)

  7. Dr Seaver for sure. There was something hip and fun loving to him. Plus he was a shrink so he can prescribe meds.
