Celebrations for special days are stupid. They should just be outlawed completely. Perhaps I should celebrate my birthday on some random day in September. The weather is always better in September than in May anyway.

Mother’s Day ended in tears. Mine and theirs.

My anniversary ended in tears. Mine and theirs.

How will my birthday end? MYSTERY!

Let’s just say I am a little ornery rightthisverysecond. I thought, Hey! since I am going away on a lovely trip (my first real vacation in FOUR YEARS) I will share my anniversary with my entire family and invite my children to accompany us to a cloth-napkined restaurant for a lovely night out. Until one cried. And then another cried. And I put my cloth napkin on the table, grabbed the keys, and like a stubborn toddler, stomped out of the restaurant to sit in the car and be angry in peace. Needless to say, a meal in a restaurant was not in the cards.

So, I got into bed and stuffed my face with the guilt cupcakes my husband brought home.

(Guilt cupcakes > a husband who plays hockey on your anniversary)

And then I watched Grey’s Anatomy while I yelled at my TV that this was so effing ridiculous. Also, kind of repulsive. I WAS EATING CUPCAKES YOU KNOW. Also, I was annoyed by my Twitter stream and suddenly felt horrible for all of my west coast friends. I hope they shut down their social media between 9-10pm EST.

But! Just because I am ornery today (and not just because one of my most favorite people on the planet doesn’t think the movie Elf is funny)(and not just because my iMac shits the bed every morning)(and not just because I have 13,456 things on my to-do list before I get on an airplane today) doesn’t mean I won’t make book on promises.

After a Twitter conversation led to two things—The song Wild Horses stuck in my head AND a compliment about my recommendations getting to my swollen head (*giggle*)—I promised to recommend some great music that you may not have heard but I annoy my children with on a daily basis. I have a habit of putting songs on repeat and listening to them over and over and over and over.

So, behold. Here are some REPEATERS for your enjoyment. Happy Friday!

  1. Of course Elf is funny! The escalator scene is classic. Enjoy your vacation.

  2. Ali, you’re a giver! Thank you! I know only two of these songs (and love them both; A Little Bit of Everything may just bring me to tears when I’m driving the car and singing at the top of my lungs. My son likes it for the buffet description). I am kicking off my long weekend by treating mysef to a little iTunes retail therapy and will name this playlist Ali’s Repeaters.

  3. SO happy I could help your retail therapy!

Comment by Sharon on May 18, 2012
  5. it is not. Because LOST was good and this Grey’s finale was SHIT.

    Heh.

I wonder what else I can Instagram to inspire your posts. 😉

  10. It’s funny that we’re such good friend and have the exact opposite taste in music. I’ve never even heard of any of these people!

Have a great trip! Happy early birthday!

  11. Ahh. But the real question is…will you even listen to them?? 😉

Comment by alimartell on May 18, 2012
  12. Nope. Because I know I won’t like them. 🙂

Comment by Kristabella on May 18, 2012
  13. See…that’s just unfair. At least I give your music a chance.

    YOU MIGHT LIKE IT, JOHNSON.

  14. You give my music a chance because that’s what your kids listen to!

  15. RE: Grey’s Anatomy: I KNOW, right?

Comment by Megan on May 18, 2012
  16. I am SO glad you posted music. I saw your conversation w/Kristabella today and was intrigued, and now I am rewarded. Yay.
I hope you have a lovely vacation, that doesn’t end in tears.

Can’t wait for the kids to go to bed so I can listen in peace.

  17. I’ll get to the music – which I’m sure I’ll love – in a little bit. But first…

I CAN’T BELIEVE YOU OUTED ME. Sigh, I guess I kind of did out myself on twitter. I promise to give it another shot.

  18. *hangs head in shame* Just goes to show that I’ve had my head down for a bit too long because I don’t know any of those songs. Thanks for sharing.

  19. OK, just done listening to all of the music, and I have to say I liked Furr and A Little Bit Of Everything the best, but it’s all really good stuff.

That being said, based on this music I’d recommend for you to listen to:
    First Aid Kit
    Of Monsters and Men
The Tallest Man In The World
    Gillian Welch’s latest album

Thanks for turning me on to some great music. I think we have similar tastes.

  20. Yes Yes YES. I know almost all of these. I love finding music kindred spirits. I *knew* I liked you 😉

Comment by alimartell on May 21, 2012
  21. Love Blitzen Trapper, and the rest of all your great music pics.
First Aid Kit is also on regular rotation here these days as is Kings Of Convenience.
Good music helps to take the edge off when the kid/dog/husband are driving me crazy.

    Cupcakes help too.

    have a fun trip.

  22. Yes, down with forced happy days. Except let’s not skip Mother’s Day next year like we did this year. Mommy needs to put her feet up and read. And make NO food decisions of any kind.

And, I’d love to listen to new music, but I’m afraid it will make me forget the lyrics to my favorite Fresh Beats song.
