My son has developed something I never expected—

—a full-fledged Canadian accent.

So, for example, let’s say that I was saying the following, which, of course, it completely hypothetical because I am not sporty and I don’t really like ice cream: I played hockey in my socks with Josh and then went to Kopp’s.

The Os would all sound very AHHHH, like when you sigh or when you are all AHHH, I see Ali, you are so smart.

I played haaaahkey in my saaaahks with jaaaaahsh and then went to Kaaaaahp’s.

That’s not, like, the technical pronunciation or anything, and it’s probably not entirely an accurate portrayal of how I actually pronounce these Os, but it’s just the easiest way for me to explain it without doing some sort of crazypants video for you and since I am lying in bed with no pants, unwashed hair, and smudgy mascara, a video is not in the cards.

My son, up until about 2 months ago, pronounced it the same way I did.

But now.

NOW!

It sounds more like

I played hAWkey in my sAWks with JAWsh and then went to KAWpp’s.

It’s like I don’t even know who my little Canadian is anymore.

The next thing I know he will be saying PASS-ta and SORE-y.

And making videos with Robin Sparkles.

Or something.

  1. Love it. I have a celebrity crush on Cobie Smulders AKA Robin Scherbatsky (Sparkles). I actually love Canadian accents and I’m pretty sure after I came back from Robin Sacks Silverman’s brother Russell’s wedding – I think I said Eh for months.

Canadian accents are adorable, but we’re still going to need video evidence.

  7. My top notch accent understanding skills hear your accent sounding like a Boston accent. Is this at all true? haha.
I am trying to say SORE-y another way and I can’t come up with anything… but I’m totally Canadian, so that must be why! 😉
Maybe he just wants to go to the mall today…
