Sometimes it’s a little bit awesome that my mom is a hoarder. I mean, is there anything funnier that pulling out your jewelry box from 6th grade to discover the, um, treasures that are still hiding in there? Good god, there is nothing in there that is not a colossal embarrassment. There’s some charm bracelets, some giant mismatched decoupaged flower earrings, four mood rings, and a large pin that says, “cheesecake has no calories when eaten off of someone else’s plate.” No I am not kidding. But I can tell you one thing; Emily is feeling really good about herself and her personal sense of style right about now.

This is a problem because this child has no clothing. Well, that’s a lie. She does have clothing, but, because I am PARENT OF THE YEAR, her jeans are all a size 7 and some of her shirts are a size 6x. She is TEN. I hadn’t noticed that she was outgrowing all of her clothing right before my eyes. I never realized that she was wearing the same three outfits every single day; I just assumed that 4th graders have their favorites and decided it was best not to argue with her. I hadn’t realized she was repeating outfits out of necessity.

So, we went shopping. Four times.

Yes. We did.

And to put it mildly and to try my best to not use any of my favorite British expletives, I will just tell you that we walked away with nothing. That’s too babyish. That’s too granny-ish. That’s too long. That’s too short. That’s too loose. That’s too tight. That looks too cheap. That’s too 3rd grade. That makes me look too short. That sleeve is too puffy. That sleeve is too flat. That shirt has sleeves. That shirt doesn’t have sleeves. That pattern is too busy. That pattern is too plain. Those cuffs are too gathered. Those cuffs aren’t gathered enough.

So, it seems that she has absolutely no clue what she wants…other than the fact that if *I* like it, she wants nothing to do with it.

Obviously, because once upon a time I wore these.

On purpose.

  1. I am SO screwed when Katelyn grows up because I have ZERO fashion sense.

  2. 10 year olds are easy… just wait till they hit 12/13 and grow out of their clothes every few weeks… and wear the same size shoe as you and want bcbg dresses and hunter flats…..

  3. I remember I was around her age when I just flat out refused to shop with my mom. I’d go with a babysitter, family friend, online. Instead, she had final veto power on things I brought home if they were too expensive or inappropriate. I wouldn’t take it too personally.

  4. I can SOOOOOO relate. I have a 10 year old daughter… well, and a 13 year old {sob} and a 15 year old {bigger sob}.

    Help me.

  6. Yes ma’am. ALL THREE PAIRS are earrings.

    I die.

  7. I think you and I had similar taste in jewelry, Ali.

I have too much fun dressing my gal. We’ll see how long she lets me get away with what I do.

  8. Are those earrings made out of Shrinky Dinks? And Sculpey polymer clay? Did you make them? Did your mom make them? So many questions without answers . . . my head is swimming.

  9. Those earrings look like they were made from Shrinky-Dinks, were they?

Oh, the old if-my-mom-likes-it-I-don’t trick, yeah that doesn’t ever get easier. *sigh*

  10. Those earrings were all GIFTS that I was excited to get. I know. I KNOW. They aren’t shrinky dinks..they are more…wooden almost. *shudder* The late 80s, man, what can I say?!?!?

  11. Ha! I love those earrings. They take me back…

  12. My daughter isn’t even 2 yet and she has shoe tantrums every time we go to the mall. She’s obsessed with shoes! She has to try on anything that’s pink, strut around the store, smiling, and then I have to drag her out of there kicking and screaming. I don’t even want to think about what she’ll be doing at 10!

  13. Isn’t that the natural order of things? I believe every daughter in the history of ever has hated everything her mother has ever picked out. Sunrise, sunset.

Oddly enough, I liked shopping with my dad when I was a teen. His taste was about 50/50, but some of the stuff he picked out was pretty damn cute!

  14. I think it is awesome that you include her in the clothes picking process and validate her opinions. I remember going shopping with my mother who only brought us along to make sure her choices fit us. I blame this on the small fact that I may or may not have a shopping problem. 😉

  15. My mom wore stirrup pants and Snoopy T-shirts for most of my tweenage/teenage years. I think the earrings are a HUGE step up from that!

  16. I’m sure your Josh is alot like my Scott, you can just buy them stuff and they’ll wear it? I mean, mostly I don’t even bring him with me, I just get the stuff and if anything doesn’t fit I’ll got an exchange for a different size (this is rare though). But girl .. ah yes, nothing is ever right. My mom had 3 girls. I DISTINCTLY remember being in about grade 4 and arguing and crying about a pair of shoes she wanted to buy me, I complained and finally we left the store without them. Then I cried because I realized I’d upset my mom (imagine! lol) .. and so eventually she went and got them. But it’s such a HARD time for kids this age (girls esp.) where they are judged, its so sad, by there peers. Anyway .. good luck, with the 5th shopping spree, maybe you should just go by yourself lol!

  17. My Emily is only four and has strong opinions about her clothing – she has to pick out her clothes/shop with me. Maybe part of the blame is the name?

Or maybe because she’s seen far to many photos of me wearing acid-washed jeans and sporting Big Bangs.

  18. Easy…you PAY = you PICK. That’s the rule in this house…it helps, of course, that M. and I have the same taste (=I pay. Again)…LOL. Sorry – I know not much help. Plus I tend to buy her stuff 6 months to 1 year in advance to capitalise on sales overseas and here. And it also helps that she wears a crappy ass uniform to school. And FWIW – the 80’s? I have purged my memories AND my wardrobe of any evidence. Whatsover. 🙂

  19. Those, uh, earrings, are…neat

  20. Emily should go shopping with an Aunt (honorary or real, because the girl deserves a trip to Austrilia, right?)– it’s easier on everyone. And I gotta say, I like the Shrinky Dink earrings. 🙂

  21. My mom and I go through all her old jewelry every few years and just marvel at the absolute awesome ugliness. She too had LOTS of decoupaged earrings. What’s really sad, though, is the last time we did this (last year!) I stole a couple pairs of earrings because they’re cute again.
