April 7 11

My daughter Emily is ten years old. This year, all 4th graders at Associated Hebrew Day School participated in a program called Project Give Back. Each student had to pick a charity to learn about and to teach his or her fellow students about. When Emily and I started talking about this project, she didn’t hesitate for a single second.

Friends of Maddie. Obviously.”

Although the two never met, Miss Maddie made a huge impact on my little girl.

Emily donated $100, from her own pocket, to Friends of Maddie.

She wears purple just for Maddie.

She lets purple balloons go just for Maddie.

She marched in the rain just for Maddie.

Emily is a special kid.

Just like Maddie.

I am just so ridiculously angry at the world that the two will never get to meet. They would have been a force.

  2. Awesome project that your teacher gave the students. And to donate to something so near and dear to your heart, very special. Although I didn’t know her personally Maddie’s beautiful face is etched forever in my memory. You must be very proud of your double digit girl!

  6. When I saw the blurb for your post in my reader, my first thought was that I wasn’t sure I wanted to read it…My daughter just turned one, which just about broke my heart, and I was sure you’d be making me cry over the happy/sadness of seeing your baby turn 10.

Yeah, I’m crying, and this was obviously even more painful to read, but I’m so glad I did read it. Emily is what I want Anna to grow up to be…
