It’s no secret that I am a weeeeeee bit of a picky eater. I fit somewhere in between my son, who eats approximately 4 things and refuses to try anything new unless I bribe him with silly bandz and even then he is usually uncooperative and my daughter, who eats approximately anything and everything that is put in front of her and will try anything new and her absolute favorite food to eat ever is salmon sashimi (for those who are new here…that’s a piece of raw salmon. And that’s it.)

So, yes, I fall somewhere in between. I will try some new foods and sometimes I will actually surprise myself. I tried Thai food under protest and now it’s one of my most favorite foods. But, there are some foods that I am just averse to…I will not eat anything that swims or that goes near the water – no fish, no shellfish. No. Uh uh. I don’t eat anything with any sort of Indian curry. I just cannot. I do not eat organ meats. I don’t eat raisins. Or olives. It took me about three years to try cheesecake. THREE. I didn’t eat ice cream until this summer. I know.

BUT. My tried and true favorite…cereal. Breakfast, lunch, or dinner. There really is never an inappropriate time for a bowl of delicious cerealy goodness. Cookie Crisp. Count Chocula. Peanut Butter Cap’n Crunch. Apple Jacks. Corn Pops. Frosted Flakes. Crunch Berries. Cocoa Krispies. Cheerios. Special K. Life.Wheetabix. Crispix. Kix. Lucky Charms. Mini-Wheats. Grape Nuts. Shreddies. I’m not even that picky. I love cereal.

It makes me happy. It makes me RAINBOW happy.

What about you? Are you a picky eater? Do you eat anything that doesn’t eat your first? Where on the spectrum to you fall? Have you ever tried anything under protest and ended up loving it? Let me know in the comments. Your comment is your entry to win a $100 Visa Debit Gift Card! Simple as that! 1. I’m extremely picky. But my husband isn’t, except he hates mushrooms. But I’ve snuck mushrooms into many things and he liked it just fine. I guess for me I used to hate green peppers now I really like them a lot.

Comment by Tammi Marie on October 19, 2010
  2. I think I’m pretty open about food. I refuse to eat any sort of organ but I’ll try any veggie and any fish that doesn’t smell too fishy. And I try to eat at least a few bites of things that I don’t like (unless it makes me gaggy or gives me indigestion, I don’t consider foods like that “picky” things) because I read that you need to try something a bunch of times to get used to it. Who knows if it works, I eat cooked carrots now, as long as I can mix them. Raw carrots still make me wanna barf though.

  3. Listen lady, I just made the cartoon bug out eyes when I got to that sentence about how you didn’t eat ice cream until this summer! Cripes, I think my blood type is ice cream!

I won’t eat a tomato. Never. Not even by accident. However, I will eat anything and everything you make where tomatoes are a primary ingredient. Did I say ice cream might be my blood type? I think it’s actually ketchup.

  4. I’ll try anything at least once, and I end up liking most of what I eat. The one thing I just can’t get my tastebuds to agree with is brussel sprouts. I’ve tried and tried, but I just don’t like them.

Comment by Angela on October 19, 2010
  5. I’m the exact same way with fishy stuff, so of course my husband prefers fishy food to all others! I like to think that I’m not so much picky as I am a simple food eater. Forget the sauces, don’t experiment with adding new seasonings to a perfectly fine dish, etc.

Comment by sherri on October 19, 2010
  6. Trifle. My family is *very* British, and they whip out a trifle for any special occasion. For years, I’ve covered up my gagging when I look at the stuff. It’s basically twinkies and berries drowned in jello and then covered in custard. There are all kinds of texture issues going on there; it manages to be mushy, rubbery and creamy/runny all at the same time.
Yesterday, I was visiting some family and hadn’t eaten – so I was starving – and I said yes to the invite for dessert before I knew what was on the table. Of course, it happened to be trifle. I actually tried it (as I said, I was starving) and it wasn’t nearly as disgusting as I thought. I still wouldn’t request it though 😛

  7. HA! This is so my topic. We have this discussion in my house EVERY night. I’m extremely picky (like, even more than your son…no, really.).

I don’t eat cooked vegetables, steamed vegetables, any vegetables unless they are FROZEN. I don’t eat anything with tomatoes (they are a fruit, not a vegetable…). I don’t eat organ meats, shellfish, or any meat except 90% lean meat or chicken. I don’t eat duck or turkey or pheasant. I don’t eat berries or nuts. I won’t eat jam, but I will eat jelly…but only on WHEAT bread.

I can go on and on. The better question to usually ask me is: “What WILL you eat?”

Comment by Cara on October 19, 2010
  8. I’m pretty sure that I’m probably on the levels of your son. I don’t like condiments: hold the ketchup, mayo, mustard, anything “wet”. I don’t like mushy foods: no bananas. I like peanut butter, but no jelly. I will only eat veggies raw, not cooked (see mushy foods). My boyfriend thinks I’m ridiculous.

  47. I’m VERY picky. My mom says feeding me as a child was quite a trial 🙂 I’ve really tried as an adult, and I’ve expanded my palate till my “won’t eat” list is much shorter: mayonnaise, beans, sushi, organ meats, zucchini, tuna, mashed potatoes (although I love all other potatoes – it’s a texture thing), cooked spinach (raw is fine) and eggplant.
Most of them are not an issue – I can eat around the zucchini. But there is one nightmare meal for me that shows up at friends houses at least once every summer: – a tuna salad sandwich and 3 bean casserole! Eeek.

Comment by LAMusing on October 23, 2010
  48. I am very picky! I think it’s mostly a texture thing with me. I can’t stand slimy stuff like mayonaise or salad dressing. The list goes on and there are more things that I don’t eat than things that I do, but I love my cereal and love my chocolate! I guess I will try pretty much anything once, if it doesn’t sound unsanitary to me (like I wouldn’t eat brains or anything uncooked). The only thing that I recall thinking that I wouldn’t like, but then actually liked is country gravy. I love it now, but I suppose I was better off thinking that I wouldn’t like it, as it isn’t exactly a health food.

I don’t consider myself a picky eater; however, it’s highly unlikely that I’d enjoy something that I didn’t want to eat in the first place–how could it be that I’d consume it? I know what I like; and, much like you, I enjoy cereal very much (just not in the mornings)! Thanks for the giveaway.
