I will admit it, I am NOT a morning person. I need an alarm to wake up, because without one, I could easily sleep until noon. By alarm, of course, what I mean is…three children and a dog. Without fail, I am woken every morning to the tune of “I WANT TO WATCH SPONGEBOB!” or “COME AND WIPE ME” or “I AM STAAAAAARVING” or a lovely little bark out of my in-need-of-the-bathroom shih-tzu. So, on most days, I serve breakfast to my kiddies in a sleepy daze, still wearing my pjs.

While I am not a morning person, somehow I birthed three morning people. Similarly, while I am not a huge breakfast (during the normal breakfast time) person, somehow I birthed three huge breakfast people. Cereal, pancakes, oatmeal, eggs, hashbrowns, bagels and lox, french toast, grits, biscuits and gravy, cinnamon toast, donuts. You name it. They love it. But, as I said, I have three kids and a dog, and we have to be out of the house, on the road to school and work by 8:20, so breakfast is usually a quick cereal experience. It’s easy and the kids like it.

On the weekends, though, I try to expand our breakfast horizons. I try to either take them out for breakfast to one of our favorite breakfast places…or take them somewhere completely new. Or we’ll pick up coffee and donuts for a special treat. Or we’ll have friends over for a bagels and cream cheese and cinnamon bun pajama party.

Because even though their mother isn’t a breakfast person, these three sure are:

  6. YES: There’s this place in SF called Zazie where you can order everything (pancakes, French toast, egg dishes) in 1s, 2s or 3s…that way, I can have savory AND sweet and order one gingerbread pancake with poached pears and lemon compote and one egg Benedict. It’s genius!

  8. Our favorite breakfast place is the kitchen table. Cereal is the morning breakfast of choice however we are also fans of breakfast for dinner and often have pancakes or french toast for dinner. My son would be happy if he could eat cereal for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Comment by Arica Saltzman on September 21, 2010
  9. Kitchen table. It’s close to the toaster and the fridge so I don’t have to run around so much when we’re eating. BUT, if the kids are with their grandparents, I bring my cereal and toast into the living room and eat in the comfy chair.
