I have always been super fascinated by genetics. It amazes me how two people can come together and create these creatures that are a combination of those mixed genes. And each one comes out with a distinct look, a different combination of how those genes played out. The interesting thing is that I’ve never particularly thought that any of my children look like me. They most certainly look like my side of the family, though. My mother’s side.

And interestingly, that’s exactly the side I wanted them to look like. Not for shallow reasons, mind you, but because of the fact that save for my Bubbie and Zayde, the majority of their families were killed in the Holocaust. It’s nice that my children can carry on those Eastern European Jewish genes. It’s like this small little screw you to Hitler. Or something. But not me. My family. My Emily looks a ton like my Bubbie (interestingly, for whom she was named), like my sister, like my mother. My Josh looks a ton like my Zayde (interestingly, for whom he was named). Isabella was always kind of a toss up, mostly because with all of that hair, it’s hard to even SEE her face.

Until now.

We were at my mom’s house, eating our ritual Friday night chicken soup. Because Isabella was dragging her lovely hair through her soup with each spoonful, I made my way over to her and put her hair up in a giant bun on top of her head. And that’s when my mom dropped her spoon and went white. Without a word, she ran over to a bureau and pulled out these.

HER.

ALSO.

HER.

  5. Wow. It’s those strong, straight brows, and something about the set of the upper lip.

I never thought I looked like anyone until one day I caught sight of my eyes, tired and creased and my dad was staring back at me. Freaky!

  6. It actually may be hard to see in these shots of Isabella, but they are basically twins. Their entire faces.

    It’s SCARY.

It was like when I saw the photos of my Dad’s Grandma and was all, “WOAH. That’s EMILY.”

  22. That is amazing! They have one face. I am the same way with my mom. The scary / funny thing was when my mom shipped me an old photo album. My husband opened it and saw a picture of my parents on vacation, and wanted to know who the guy was that had his arms all over “me”. When I told him it my dad, he was extremely perplexed, especially since my dad died when I was a kid. He totally never thought the woman in the picture was my mom!

  23. That’s so awesome! Although I look nothing like her now (or how she looked at this age) when I was young I looked just like my mom’s mom when she was growing up (although I look nothing like either one of my parents).

  24. That’s so funny. I saw that first photo and thought, holy shit that’s Bella. But wait…not even photo shop can make photos look like that. What? I’m slow.

I am the spitting image of my great grandma on my dad’s side. I know it from the one photo of her at my age. The one photo that made it to America. Shrug. There’s not really anyone left on my dad’s side. It can be hard to see it. But I love that a piece of those family members lost, lives on in my kids.

  29. LOVE this!

My son has this one sided grin that is just exactly like my Dad’s. Sometimes I’ll catch him doing it and tear up.

  30. Genetics are the shiznit.

One of my sons is the spitting image of my father. My daughters both look exactly like me, although one of them acts and sounds exactly like my sister. Like, every time she talks I’m transported back to childhood. It’s weird.

My other son is the only one that my husband’s genes got a foot in the door. He looks like a mix of my husband and my mother. Which is really disconcerting for me when he gives me a dirty look. It’s like my mother is back from the dead.

  31. Genetics are bonkers. My older son looks just like my father & grandfather, which is strange since my father looks just like my grandmother and nothing like my grandfather. My younger son looks just like my hubby now, but when we look back at photos of us as kids he looks just like me then, and not a darn thing like his dad.
