Well, it’s Monday, and while things should be headed back into normalcy (G in Toronto, kids in school, Ali in bed with her laptop doing 87 hours of work before 3pm carpool), it seems like there’s no more normal for the Martells. Indy isn’t keeping anything down, and extra trips to doggie emerg and some rehydrating shots plus anti-emetic meds haven’t really helped my poor pooch. So, today we call surgeons and discuss things that I can’t even type or say out loud; things I am not prepared to think about.

So, today we are going to change it up a little and inject a little happy into my poor site that has really taken a turn for THE DEPRESSING as of late.

A little happiness, part one:

Happiness is taking your kids to a night of the Braves and some hot dogs and some fireworks and watching your son made a total buffoon of himself to try to get on the jumbotron again.

Happiness is a chocolate face.

Happiness is finally getting your totally non-responsive grandmother to acknowledge that you are sitting in front of her, even if it was just to agree with you when you and your sister made jokes about her frail and bony frame, saying, “well, you always wanted to be skinny!”

Happiness is seeing that Pauly Shore was headlining in Fredericton, NB…because you totally thought that Pauly Shore was dead. and you really liked Encino Man.

Happiness is finally letting her get the haircut she has been asking for…FOR MONTHS.

Happiness is shopping for Betty Draper dresses with your sister…and realizing that you already have a costume plan for Halloween and it’s only September (which in my books is early…I mean, I am the mom who sent her kids in the same costumes two years in a row).

Happiness is when your hotel promises that your floor is a quiet zone and that in addition to being no marching bands…there will also be no, um, circus animals?

Happiness is OPTIMISM that this year was the right choice. I mean, Chinese restaurants are never wrong, right?

Happiness is knowing that if you come back tomorrow, you can find Happiness, part deux.

  2. Hi Ali. Glad to see that you are living by my mom’s philosophy, “experience joy every day”. Even when things are unbelievably hard it is there! Thinking of you guys.

  4. I’m so sorry for what you are going through with Indy – we recently lost both of our dogs and it’s just heartbreaking. I’m still praying and hoping that things work out.

I love the wedding procession and the haircut!

  9. You know, it’s so nice to see hotels keeping their space free of circus animals; that can be a serious problem, and no one wants to wake up spooning with a clown.
    Or do they?
    Nah.
    Well…

  18. Yes, we are in the end stages with our Grendel. Two surgeries and multiple tumors, it’s getting time to let go. And yet, the kids and I? We just can’t. Not yet. Hugs.
