August 10 09

It’s August 10th today.

It’s also the first day of school. (which really means it’s the first REAL day of work for me)

Sure, they may *look* all peachy keen and nifty and groovy here all decked out in their (way-too-big) Gap uniforms, but the past two days have been a mix of nervesslashexcitementslashIdon’tknowanyone.

Emily even went as far as telling us she’d rather spend the day today at my grandmother’s nursing home than go to school, which, if you’ve ever met Martha the toothless wanderer, you know that wasn’t an easy decision for her.

hmph.

and Josh said he’d rather go out and get a job than go to school.

Hmph.

But, at the end of the day. WE TALKED. And we talked about how much they liked the teachers that they met. And we talked about how much they liked the few kids they met at the open house. And we talked about the hot lunches and the outdoor classroom and the smartboards and all the computers and the awesome playgrounds and the fact that I get to walk them and pick them up every.single.day.

and they both went to school with smiles on their faces and springs in their steps.

And I went to Dunkin’ Donuts* and Old Navy with a smile on my face and an extra spring in my step knowing that they are going to have a GREAT first day.

and so am I.

but I kind of already want to pick them up.

*that is, of course, until the lady at Dunkin Donuts got the husband’s flatbread order wrong (ice cold. barf) and when he went back in to complain, she took her hands off of the garbage she was just emptying to make him a new one. It wasn’t until the husband said, “um, excuse me! You didn’t wash your hands!” that another employee raced over, apologized profusely, and made him another sandwich, which, obviously, he didn’t eat because, um, hello, VOMITROCIOUS.  I didn’t think I would say this, but my gosh I miss Tim Horton’s…

  3. Ewww… that garbage/sandwich story is just nasty.

I’m sure your kids will be fine; they’re outgoing and will probably fit in nicely.

  6. But they’re so those cool kids who just came from CANADA. Which, in Atlanta, might as well be Abu Dhabi.

  10. They look adorable, no matter their facial expressions! Did you have fun getting them to school so early? (If it makes you feel any better, I was driving past your area at 7:45 this morning, which is usually the time I get out of bed.)

  18. Oh, yes, school starts early there. Love Emily’s bag and matching blue nails.

OMG! gross about the sandwich… yeah, they always wear gloves at Tim’s when making sandwiches, and slip on new ones when they go from garbage to sandwich detail.

I vote you start hitting up the bagel place- the coffee’s not quite Dunkin Donuts, but at least they’re clean, have tasty bagels and will remember you for life.

  28. This one made me stop lurking…we hit Dunkin’ vacationing in Daytona and it wasn’t that thrilling, not that your encounter can be classified as thrilling.
Welcome to Tim Horton’s can I take your order please…you’ll have to get a long IV or friends to ship it to you.

  30. 1) I’d be depressed also if I started school a MONTH before labor day. (What the hell?)
    2) DD is overrated. Luckily Columbus got the memo and they have Tims here. Though it doesn’t matter because I’m addicted to Starbucks oatmeal. (Still, I’m a Second Cup girl for life).

  31. They look cute for their first day of school. I’m sure they have a million friends by now.

Why do they not have Tim Hortons in Atlanta? I am sitting in Columbus, OH and I can look out my office window and see two of them! You need to come here obviously.
