Yesterday, at work, I carried my purse with me to the bathroom. I mean, I’ve been leaving my purse in the same spot for 10 years, but now, all of a sudden, everything’s changed. I can’t take a bathroom break without thinking someone’s going to come and steal the 87 cents I am carrying on me.

Yesterday, I had to think things that I never should have to think about people that I know and liked. But, when someone steals from you, in a room full of people who would never do that to do, all of a sudden, everyone’s a suspect. This losing faith in people place is a dark, dark one.

Yesterday, I had to fill out a police report.

Yesterday, when my husband forced me to eat I finally had my appetite back, I picked up wings from my favorite wing place. And they changed their sauce. with no notice. and let me just tell you, their new sauce is shit. I couldn’t even eat them.

and then something happened.

my bffs showed up at my door.

Today, I feel lucky to have the very best friends in the entire world. There is a lot of shit in the world, but hoo boy there is also a lot of good.

Today, I am BLOWN AWAY but the support I have gotten from my internets. You guys, really, truly, are amazing. The calls, the emails, the comments, the virtual hugs. The story that one reader sent me about telling my story in her third grade classroom because poor Brady had his pencil sharpener stolen from another classmate. The “Elizabeth Lemon is no longer a Workplace Sex Criminal” certificate that miss metalia sent my way.

Today, I am humbled, even if I’m still carrying my purse to the bathroom when I pee.

  1. My second week at work on my new job three years ago, I had my checkbook stolen from my desk. The funny thing is, it was hidden in a notebook.
But funny enough, after two hours away from my desk, I retunred to my desk so that I could write out my rent check. It was GONE.

Now mind you, I work for a very reputable company (think- seeing anderson cooper on a daily basis kind of company).

    I was SO UPSET.

I wouldnt leave my purse by my desk anymore. BUt then, I got over it. I mean you have to eventually. Yes, I lost faith in humanity at that point in time- I mean you need secure ID’S to get INTO MY OFFICE BUILDING!
But- at the end of the day, you have to learn to trust again, even if you are a bit jaded from it all.

    And your friends- totally rock.

  3. I didn’t get a chance to leave a comment yesterday – I wanted to say how sorry I was, what a violation. Awful. But your friends? Amazing. Redemption of the situation right there.

  4. Just as long as you point that lens-looking thing that is in no way a camera lens hidden in your purse at your crotch when you go to the bathroom, we’re all good.

  6. I’m so glad you filed charges, but I’m more glad that you have good people around you who have raised your spirits. It’ll never excuse the actions taken by the person who stole your money, but today, I’d like to believe in karma.

And cookies. I always believe in cookies.

  11. Blegh, I’m so sorry to hear about this.

On the other hand, I am so very happy that you have a good support system to get you through. By “support system” I don’t just mean the cookie dough, but that is a pertinent part.

  12. That’s such a crappy feeling. It REALLY sucks. What kind of person does that to people they know? I’m glad your BFFs made things better but I know how that violation feels in a way. My credit card was duplicated a few months ago. As in, I handed it to someone to pay for something and a few days later I got a call about suspicious, exorbitant charges at The Children’s Place in NY while I was simultaneously buying stuff at Overstock. To think I looked at someone when they did this, and then they tried to buy kid’s clothing? WTF.

Also, cookie dough? Your friends are brilliant.

  14. Glad you have such a great support system. But no matter how much good you find in humanity, it’s still really smart to be proactive and protect yourself. No sense in inviting people to hurt you.

Glad that you have some super, better friends surrounding you though. Restores the faith somewhat, anyway.
