the guitar-toting, toothless nun.

It took forever for Miss Emily to lose teeth. She was six before the first one fell out. and then she became the sharkgirl, growing new teeth in underneath her old teeth. in the last little while, she has gone on a tooth-losing rampage, earning herself about $80 in cash. i know. i know. Well, while I was away, her daddy took her to the store to make her dreams come true.  My 8-year-old is the official owner of this…

one day my life will be quiet again.

sigh

Her first project on the guitar was teaching herself to play edelweiss. I swear. She’s used the guitar all but three times and is playing edelweiss. WHERE DID THIS CHILD COME FROM?

speaking of everyone’s favorite austrian theme song…Emily got her part in The Sound of Music last night. After her initial disappointment that she was not, in fact, going to play Gretl, or Leisel, or Maria, she seemed to be excited about her 9 lines and her opening-the-show solo (another solo!) of The Sound of Music and her being in almost every single song and scene. She is playing a nun.

Of one thing i am certain. my daughter is going to look awesome in her veil and habit. and, she’ll have herself a Halloween costume to boot (bonus!) and who doesn’t love a toothless nun with a guitar?

who knew they sold pink guitars!!

we’ll be needing a video of the prodigy playing edelweiss of course! (but you knew that right lol)
nice initiative your Emily has! very cool!

Beautiful guitar.. and beautiful girl. I hope you will get to hear her play as often as possible.

So jealous. I want that guitar!

Halloween contest — Ha! You only wish, right!?!

Your daughter has a real talent for music, both with her voice and her ability to pick up songs quickly on the guitar. Emily truly is gifted. She reminds me of my girls when they were young. Both are self-taught on the piano and Dani plays flute and piccolo (or she used to anyway), and they both sing. Encourage her all you can!

She looks SO CUTE with that guitar.

She is one gifted girl, that Emily.

COSTUME. I meant COSTUME.

Be thankful she didn’t bring home a drum set. Or a kazoo. At worst it’s like you’re keeping a hippie in the closet, and who doesn’t love that?
And tell her congrats on the part. As someone who has made a career out of being 3rd tap dancer on the left, there’s much to be said for the nuns.

What a pretty guitar! And at least she didn’t buy a drum set.

[ 29 Apr 09 ]

that Em is a star in the making!!!

My daughter wants that pink guitar SO bad, she has all of 4 dollars saved.

We watch Barbie and the Diamond Castle on repeat. She wants to play the guitar now. Heh.

I didn’t lose my first tooth until second grade. How old are you then? Seven? I only lost it because my brother pulled it out.

Yay Emily! We can all say we knew her when, when she becomes a big, famous star!

Seriously, I want to BE Emily. How does an 8 year old get to be that cool, I ask you?

[ 29 Apr 09 ]

Awww…I LOVE the sound of music! I have to say, she could totally be my daughter from another mother. She’s pretty awesome.

Love the pink guitar!

[ 29 Apr 09 ]

At least her music is more traditional. I bought my 3 yr old an acoutstic for his Bday and he plays All the single ladies by Beyonce, Heartless by Kanye West and we will rock you by Queen.

[ 29 Apr 09 ]

Your artist’s pink guitar rocks! :)

I agree with April – Edelweiss is just fine – I can see my kids doing The Clash and Metallica. :)

[ 29 Apr 09 ]

My kid would have tried the Doodlebops. I don’t know if that’s better or worse than Edelweiss.

Also – congratulations to Emily! That’s awesome that she got another part at her age.

[ 29 Apr 09 ]

80 BUCKS? Damn, times have changed. I think I got a quarter per tooth. Unless Miss Emily has a whole lot of teeth?

f.y.i. i was a nun and a nazi in the sound of music in sixth grade. what great parts to come home with in a nice jewish day school!

Apparently the longer you keep your baby teeth, the stronger your adult teeth will be!
I lost my last one at 16…i’m REALLY delayed :D

I actually have many fond memories of toothless, guitar playing nuns. Oh how I wish I was kidding. Actually, she wasn’t toothless but she had a Madonna-sized gap between her front ones and when she sang the praises of Jesus, her missing side teeth gaps were absolutely fascinating to stare at from my preschooler vantage point.

[ 29 Apr 09 ]

She’s like Avril Lavigne! Only prettier. And less angsty. And with a much better fashion sense. So, basically, they both play guitar.

[ 29 Apr 09 ]

That is so great! I want to see the show!!

She could be the next Britney, except hopefully without the head shaving and mental breakdown and with real talent.

[ 30 Apr 09 ]

hahaha brilliant post title!!

oh awesome! good on her – i’ve been wanting to start up the guitar. she obviously has serious music skillz to pick it up so fast, and what with her singing?! you’ve seriously got a star on your hands… :)

That guitar is so cute! My dad made my teen brother a lime green guitar that he loves. Hope Emily enjoys it, and that her show goes well- that sounds like fun!

[ 04 May 09 ]

Count your blessings with a self-motivated and talented child like that! Hope her solos and 9 lines went well!
