April 17 09

so, remember way back in February when I had this crazy idea that I was going to make the gym my bitch? remember, I was all, yes, I DO have a habit of getting excited about the gym, going for a little bit, and then quitting, but this time WILL BE DIFFERENT?

and you all secretly laughed at me?

Well, two months later and I’m pleased to report that I haven’t quit yet. sure, I find some of the weight machines a fucking pain in the ass tedious , and I go through the motions of most of them just to get through them, with the exception of the thigh machines and the ab machine, just to get my ass on the treadmill. because, god, I LOVE it. when i first got on, I was running (I’m using the term loosely here, people) while watching Family Ties, and I’d run for, um, about 2.5 minutes and then go back to walking. I stopped watching TV, starting cranking the music, and now I can make it an entire half an hour only stopping once or twice for about 30 seconds at a time.

and then I did something I’d NEVER in my entire life thought I would ever do. I let my sister convince me to run the Thanksgiving day Atlanta half marathon.

you can feel free to pick your jaw up off the floor now.

so, then, yesterday, I had this crazy idea that since I am going to have to, you know, at some point actually get off the treadmill and run outside, yesterday was going to be the day.

2.2 miles. outside.

I know it doesn’t sound like much, especially considering that the half marathon is, what, 13.1? but consider how far I’ve come from my Family Ties Watching days…

and please don’t judge me that my favorite song, well, second to the Rocky training montage, to run to is “We Rock” from…OH THE SHAME…Camp Rock. it was on the playlist I put on my ipod for carpool and when I had the damn thing on shuffle this song came up and I was in a good groove and didn’t change it and kept it on and it was good. and then I put it back on again and I can’t believe I (the self-proclaimed music snob) am telling you this information that may come back to haunt me for the rest of my life…

FINE. judge me. i totally deserve it.

judge me. and then help me. What does a person who ONLY listens to fairly angsty indie rock RUN to? I mean, sure, Neutral Milk Hotel is fine for weight machines and the elliptical, but for running?

Metalia and Kristin and my friend Tamara have ever-so-generously offered up their workout playlists because they secretly know that Demi Levato and the Jonas Brothers are just one step away from listening to, GASP, Miley Cyrus

also…I have some other questions…

SHORTS.

I don’t know that I could put off shortshorts. my inherited-from-my-mother-and-my-grandmother short-girl Jewish PULKEE thighs have no business being in the face of other runners. no one wants to see that. so, what to wear?

because if you don’t help, I may end up wearing this…

def

but, hey, at least then you wouldn’t be making fun of my music choices…

  1. Well as long as we’re confessing to bad taste in music…
When I ran cross-country my favorite song to run to was Sk8er Boi by Avril Lavign. It’s the exact right speed for how fast I ran, and it made me feel a little kick-ass. Today I tend to stick to Rammstein, because it’s empowering and totally makes me feel hardcore.

  2. Well, how can I possibly judge you seeing as I FORCED MY HUSBAND TO BUY ME THE TWIGHLIGHT SOUNDTRACK so I could run to it. Oh the shame. I don’t think he will ever live down being the 32 year old man buying Twighlight amongst the 14 year old girls. I also like the Lululemon Punya shorts.

  4. RUNNING SKIRTS! They sound dippy and stupid and as if they’re for women that care more about how they look than how they run, but they are actually AWESOME. Usually they consist of spankie pants (like under a cheerleading skirt) or compression shorts (bike shorts) under a skirt. They are cute as hell, cover my thighs, and feel GREAT running (I’ve heard it said that it’s similar to running naked, I haven’t run naked so I don’t know). You can get the really expensive ones at a running store or give the concept a test drive with a cheaper one from Target, which work just as well in my opinion.

My running music is old metal (Iron Maiden, ACDC, Motley Crue), so that’s probably no help to you.

  7. I ALWAYS wear capri runner’s pants because I hate shorts (and they chafe if you run more than a couple miles). I also hate the really fitted runner’s tights that make me feel like I’m losing all of my circulation. Thus, I’ve been using this style of late and loving it:

Nike makes some really great comparable ones, but these are a bit cheaper.

  8. I’m the same way. When I run in the movie room I can’t go as far but the ipod changes EVERYTHING. I’ve run an extra hour on a good playlist.

My guilty pleasure to run to – Christina’s version of Lady Marmalade from Moulin Rouge. Also love – Going the Distance by Cake.

    Lose yourself – Eminem
    Sexyback – JT
Since you been gone – Kelly Clarkson

The word ‘run’ just makes me break out in a “I haven’t ACTUALLY been running” sweat, so I’m not sure I have any good music suggestions for you (other than to agree to the Foo Fighters…mmmm…Dave Grohl…). Suffice to say, I would happily watch Joe Jonas singing the theme song to Family Ties. Sha la la la….

  14. I prefer basketball shorts when it’s warm enough and yoga capris of the non-sweat-material variety when it’s cooler. For me it’s not so much the jiggle, it’s my laziness about leg shaving that I prefer to hide! I walk/jog to techno & punk mostly, from The Crystal Method to Less Than Jake – I have pretty broad taste though & usually just put my whole library on shuffle.

  15. Funny enough, back in November I decided to make my non-running butt run this year’s Thanksgiving Half Marathon in Atlanta. And inspired by your tweet about going for a run outside, I ended up doing the same thing. Apparently, for the same distance. (I swear I’m not stalking you).

As far as shorts are concerned, those Nike running shorts with the built in undies are freaking amazing. They keep you cool, and they’re long enough you’re not embarrassed to be seen in them.

  21. Ooh, yay! I ‘ran’ my first half marathon last year. Before training for that, I had (I shit you not) not run even a mile since high school gym.

And I also petitoned my friends to send me music suggestions – but my running tastes fall a little bit more toward the Britney side, so I’ll leave that alone. ;)

As far as what to wear … Nike makes some great shorts that are kinda short I guess, but really baggy so they are still really comfy. Another tip … plan to wear a top-layer shirt that you can just throw away half way through … you’ll start a lot colder than you’ll end up.

Can’t wait to hear more about the training!

  25. Ok, my running playlist evolves a lot. Some days, I have to go all pop-tastic with some Justin Timberlake, Kelly Clarkson, Janet, PCD, etc. Then there are days of the Hair Metal – Motley Crue, GNR, AC/DC, Bon Jovi… and then there are the “I’m going to get mad at my running” and break out the scary Marilyn Manson (“Beautiful People” has a great beat), Filter, White Zombie, Godsmack… I’m a bit of a character when I’m running.

But you’re welcome to borrow my playlist anytime!

As for running clothes, I second El on the running skirts. I have three of them from http://www.skirtsports.com, and I love them. The compression shorts (vs. the shorties) have plenty of coverage, but still allow air circulation, they have pockets on either side for iPod or gels, and there is a slit along the waist band to thread your earphone cord through them.

Oh, and if you have an iPod Nano (at least 3rd gen), I highly recommend the Nike+ system, even if you don’t have the Nike shoes (you can buy another holder to thread through your laces). It’s great to see your progress as you train.

Once you get down here to Atlanta, we can talk more local-weather-specific training gear… trust me, you’ll need it. ;)

    (Sorry for the novella.)

Anyway, from my playlist I highly recommend: Wolf Parade’s I’ll Believe In Anything, Tyrone Davis’ Can I Change My Mind, Rob Thomas’ This is How a Heartbreaks, and Outkast’s I Like the Way You Move. I’d also add Coldplay’s Lovers in Japan, but something tells me you hate Coldplay.
