March 19 09

so, i had a lunch date yesterday with two very important people, which, really is somewhat monumental because I never go out for lunch during the day. EVER. i really rarely leave my desk and teenytinycubicle at work…only for meetings and for peeing.  and if you’ve ever read any of my tweets about the state of affairs in the bathrooms at my office…you most likely are thinking i shouldn’t even be getting up to pee. EVER. train your bladder, ali! fight the urge! (of course, all this talk of pee makes me, um, need to)

my lunch dates marveled at my ability to own a giant wallet that is filled with almost nothing. i had exactly $5.05 and about 87 cards. oh, and four free coffee tabs from Tim Horton’s. they scolded me for being irresponsible and not carrying around any cash with me.

so, i welcomed them to 2009, it’s a lovely place! it’s filled with debit cards and credit cards and bank machines and starbucks cards and tim horton’s cards and even gas cards. I don’t carry cash around with me because i don’t NEED to. it’s as simple as that. i think, personally, this idea of HAVING TO CARRY CASH is simply a mentality that was passed down from our parents’ generation; a generation where cash was a necessity.

cash-only

i also have thoughts on how carrying a big wad of cash makes people feel powerful. or something.

having cash on me is more dangerous than not, i think. as someone who likes to spend money, if i have it, i spend it. i have had to stop with the table banking moves at group lunches where i pay with credit card (um, hello, AIR MILES!) and take the cash. because THAT cash? buys shoes, and necklaces, and jeans, and french fries. I AM A DANGER TO SOCIETY.

okay…well, i want to hear from you. how much cash do you have on your person at any given time?

also, i haven’t had a chance to go through all my pictures from fashion week yet (a girl has priorities, yanno. i had to watch America’s Next Top Model and pray that BushBabyAllison didn’t get the boot because i totally want her to win AND watch LOST because zomg LOST) (also, i have another show tonight…WITH INTERVIEWS! gah!) (also, i’m totally going to crash this weekend…fashion week + gym = TIRED AS FUCK and my inability to stop writing in all caps…so now i not only annoy you with my parentheses and my lack of caps at the beginning of sentences and my overuse of ellipses, now you get the ALL CAPS BECAUSE I’M ALL ABOUT THE EMPHASIS, YO!) but i can give you a little preview…please refrain from any comments about my pastiness. i already know how badly my poor, poor skin needs to see the sun.

alinole

(i assume that mystic tan isn’t a cash only establishment)

(i’m kidding. i’m not really a spray tan in a booth kind of girl)

  1. I NEVER carry cash. Ever ever ever. I think I’ve gone to a bank machine maybe 6 times in two years. Carrying cash is very dangerous…it just magically disappears! Plus I get a kick ass cash back reward at the end of the year on my CIBC Visa so every thing single possible goes on it.

  2. I have $3.75 on my right now, I also rarely carry cash. I also use my credit card for airmiles and transfer cash to it .. who wouldn’t:)

  3. No cash for me. If I carry cash I spend it. Not on shoes though (I buy those anyway, and would prefer the airmiles on such a purchase), but coffee and more coffee and cookies (which I do NOT need) and lunch out during the workday, and unnecessary stuff from shoppers drug mart!!

  4. cash usually disappears from my wallet too, usually with not a single item I can account for either? I am the debit/credit queen…only problem is I’m also a shopoholic & “forget” about many of my purchases until that statement arrives. wish that would disappear!

  5. I usually carry a few bucks in cash with me (only by accident) and forget it’s there to spend. I think if I had to return to ALL CASH I’d probably spend less… it’s depressing to see the actual BILLS disappear from your hand.

I can’t believe you’re with what’s-his-face! LOL The ANTM guy. SoulGlo has a cousin, and it’s called OrangeGlo. I think he’s not only the president, he’s a member.

  6. I have $2 on me right now. I have a teenager. They take any cash you have available basically on a daily basis, so I never have actual money for longer than a few hours.

Also, debit and credit cards are better anyway. I’m the same – if I have it I’ll spend it. Also, companies that do not accept American Express piss me off. Bad. It’s my favorite card because my husband pays that bill. heh.

  7. I NEVER carry cash. If I do, it’s an accident, and I’m all, “Holy shit, a dollar!” and immediately spend it on half a Mrs Fields cookie. The only time I carry cash is when I travel, and then it’s like $20 for a cab and Twizzlers on the plane. Ask your lunch dates if they can forgive you for not carrying cash if you forgive them for scolding you for something that’s not only not wrong, but none of their damn business.

  9. In my wallet right now I have a crumpled $1 bill and some assorted change for meters. I always feel like I should at least have $20 hidden in my wallet for “emergencies” or something, but as soon as I take out an extra $20 and “hide” it (i like “” a much as you like ALLCAPS today apparently!) I immediately feel like it isn’t “real” money and thus it doesn’t matter if I spend it on stupid things. I have no self control.

This is the beauty of debit cards…. at the end of the month you are forced to look at your statement and know that yes, you DID actually go to tim hortons (for example) 23 times. With cash, who cares or remembers what you spent it on.

I think the world should go all-plastic because it is the most annoying thing ever when you go to a deli or need to park somewhere and you’re faced with one of those evil cash-only signs and your only options are to try to find a cash machine which is NEVER your bank and pay $823 in fees, or beg the mercy of your more-prepared friends and need to write them a check for $4.32.

  11. Again, TWINS. We put everything on our Mastercard for the Air Miles – hence little need for cash. I like to have under $20 or so because some places around here are cash only, but other than that, carrying cash is a BAD IDEA for me.

  12. I hardly ever have cash either. The only time I make a point of having it is when I know I’m going out with a group, like pub trivia night. Because I feel bad making people wait for the one person who didn’t have cash.

And I’m SO like you (just taller) because I will NEVER do the pay the whole bill and take the cash because I will spend it. I won’t put it back in my account or whatever.

The one good thing about cash, though, is you know how much you’re spending. I tend to use cash when I go out drinking so I can tell myself “OK! Spending $60 on liquor is quite enough, young lady!”

But yeah, if I can put it on my Options Mastercard, I will. I’m a homeowner — I can always use the Canadian Tire money!

However, during the rare times I do have cash (say, from a birthday or whatever) I carry that stuff around FOREVER (CAPS, PARENTHESIS, ELLIPSES, YEAH!) because I want to savor it and remember what this weird paper stuff is.

I hoard change and random bills so I have money that my husband can’t hold me accountable for spending. You know on things like McDonald’s Sundays or a cookie from Starbucks or whatever!

I never carry cash. Ever. I haven’t carried cash around in years. Sometimes I have change – like enough to get a coffee – but for the most part I just grab cash when I need it or pay by debit.

  24. Holy crap. Nobody carries cash!

I LOVE having cash in my wallet. I take $200 out from the ATM at a time and it lasts for quite a long time…at least a month. I use it for drugstore type purchses, movies and eating out. I’m a big saver though, so I get a huge rush out of keeping it in the wallet as long as possible. It just doesn’t burn a hole in my pocket but it comes in VERY handy (i.e. when there are 6 of us at a restaurant – it’s easy to just slap down cash.)

Also sometimes I just count it and smile.

Cash is lame. Except when you’re really broke, you can carry all the money you have to spend, and then you won’t get any overdrafts. Thats not bad.

  33. I get nervous if I don’t have at least $10 and a quarter in my wallet. I don’t know what it is, as I use my debit and credit cards mostly; and I find sometimes when I use cash, when the cashiers look at the bills to check if they’re fake, (and I’ve been refused one once because it looked too well-worn and old… and I’m sure it was legit)…it’s a a bit of a pain.
