They are airing special! classic! episodes of Beverly Hills, 90210 in anticipation of the new 90210. Christine and I IM’ed while watching the two episodes – Brenda has a sleepover/Kelly tells her rape story and ‘We’ll always have Paris’ – and mocked. we mocked the high-waisted pants. the silk shirts. the cheetah print leggings. the blond curly mullet. the big glasses. the big hair. the overalls (which both Christine and i owned. we are not proud) David Silver’s bad soft core porn music (even though Donna squeals in delight ‘he’s gotten sooo good!’) and the dancing. don’t get me started on the dancing.

and then there was Kelly’s room. Where she had hanging on her walls…wait for it…giant paintings of HERSELF. they were huge and loud and airbrushy silkscreens.

and i remember coveting them.

(hangs head in shame)

these were a big hit back then. the self-portraits. almost Warhol-ian.

(i feel like Zach Morris may have had them too. and i know CC Bloom had them in her gaudy apartment in Beaches. come on…who doesn’t remember the whole post Otto Titsling “we’re leasing but we have an option to buy scene”?!?! no one? really?)

and then i remembered. my rooms growing up. i lived in two houses. my mother’s in the midwest. and my father’s in the south.

and they couldn’t have been more different.

at my dad’s house my room was, well, more Kelly Taylor-esque. It was turquoise and fuschia. the furniture was white. the ONLY thing on the walls were there posters of half-naked Asian women. (i know, right? huh?) apparently, they were very popular back then.

only slightly less popular than what hung on my brother Jonathan’s walls…let’s just say they were NEON. green, red, yellow. and they were diamond shaped. and they LIT up when you walked in the room. BUT…my room had the PINBALL MACHINE in it. oh yes. it did. i swear.

this was my TRENDY room. the one that never looked lived-in. the one that was entirely NOT ali. the one i wanted to bring people home to.

at my mom’s house my walls were white. my furniture was wood. and dated. It was covered in stuffed animals and books, exploding out of bookshelves. the walls housed my David Robinson and Michael Jordan posters…as well as some other posters…ripped out of Bop Magazine, of course. i had a really, really old apple IIc computer. I had a giant boombox and TAPES eveywhere. tapes! imagine! spelling bee trophies. photos in boxes all over the place. my bedding was white and eyelet. and i’d had it since i was a toddler.

this was my COMFORT room. the one that was lived-in. the one that was a mess. the ones with the piles of crap.

the one i miss right now.

(although, to be fair, my room looks almost exactly as it did in 1990. my mom hasn’t really changed anything. there are still posters up. there are still piles. there are still TAPES and pictures in boxes and my middle school clothing. Kelly Taylor overalls anyone??!??!)

(the Atlanta room is all gone. even the half-naked Asians and the pinball machine. thank god.)

what was your room like growing up?!?!?

last Friday we talked about spam. and porn movie titles. and i promised a starbucks giftcard to the best.

Big Trouble in Little Vagina

Children of the Cornhole

My Big, Fat, Greek Labia

Bridge On the River KY

Oceans Eleven Inches

these are my top five. pick your favorite..because i can’t. they are all way too funny. it was hard enough coming up with these five! (heh. i said hard. also? i’m 12)

  1. Okay, so how random is this? A few nights ago, my friend Jessi and I are just leaving the restaurant where we were eating dinner. While we are standing together, saying goodbye, who walks up to us to ask for directions? Ian Ziering. Steve Sanders? What are YOU doing in Utah on a Tuesday? I didn’t recognize him, but Jessi did. Wow and just wow. I feel bad he didn’t get asked back for the new show. Also – have you ever checked out gofugyourself.com? Check out the co-author’s bios. They are hilarious. One of them claims Brenda Walsh’s life as her own.

  2. *I* remember that!

And then they fight – and have the big dogs – and

Oh. Sorry. Got caught up in my Beaches nostalgia for a minute.

  3. Remember that episode where Andrea got hit by the car? And it was the worst car accident scene EVER. I caught it on SoapNet a few weeks ago, and I kept rewinding the moment. Dramatic!

My room was purple! With blue and white shag carpet! And glossy white furniture! The walls were coated with Duran Duran posters from pulled from every teen magazine I would buy. I’d lock myself in there and read or talk to my friends on my white princess phone that I covered in all kinds of puffy stickers. I miss that room. I came home one weekend during freshman year at college and found my mom in there painting it blue. Not.The.Same!

Children of the Cornhole? OK, that is just sick.

hmm.. room growing up .. is pretty much the same now too except it houses my dad’s computer office lol. wallpaper with pink and green flowers, frilly white curtains, wood floor and there used to be a twin bed that was like 20 yrs old, I swear I had then bed from 3 yrs old to university .. seriously. Who keeps a mattress THAT long ?!

  7. I am LOVING Children of the Cornhole. HA! That’s too bizarre.

    I can’t watch old 90210 shows. Too nostalgic….

    Comment by Haley-O on August 29, 2008
  8. I don’t think I can watch the new 90210, because I loved the old one so much. I remember crying when that episode first came out.

Ocean’s Eleven Inches still cracks me up…but I know I can’t vote for my own. So I’ll pick: My Big, Fat, Greek Labia.

Comment by Issa on August 29, 2008
  9. Bridge over the River KY ….love it!

    very patriotic.

My dad was in the glass /mirror business. My room had shag yellow carpet, a blue sky with clouds mural , and mirrored strips (like a rainbow). I worked at Pier One, so I had rattan chairs and cool stuff.
I had the coolest room in high school EVER!!

My friends were totally jealous of it!

Comment by swirl girl on August 29, 2008
  10. One is never too old for 90210. Nor for Warhol images. I’m ebarrassed to say that I actually do own a (fake) Warhol set of images of my dog. Yes, I guess I’m one of those kinds of people.

My favorite porn title? Hmmm. It’s a tough choice, but I think it has to be My Big Fat Greek Labia. Just so wonderfully visual…

Comment by Sharon on August 29, 2008
  11. Dude, how fun would a 90210 party be?

And my fav porn title has to be Oceans Eleven Inches because that makes me *picture* George Clooney and who doesn’t want to see his eleven inches?

My room growing up, I shit you not, was wallpapered with newspaper (except the obituary section) and then spray painted, graffiti-style, with black lights, lava lamps and a bazillion candles, wax overflowing everywhere.

Comment by Undomestic Diva on August 29, 2008
  12. Children of the Cornhole, definitely.

My room had blue walls, and blue carpet, and blue curtains, and a blue comforter. There was nothing on the walls, and all the furniture was dark wood.

It was pretty lame, actually. Thanks for bringing up that memory. ;P

  13. Mine was rose pink all growing up, with stark white painted furniture. It got embarrassing when I hit middle school and no longer wanted a pink room, so I cut up issues of teenybopper magazines and plastered my walls with pictures of JTT, Devon Sawa and Andrew Keegan (oh the shame).

When I was at soccer camp in Georgia when I was 16, my mom remodeled my room: there was a framed print of Starry Night over the bed and the room’s colors matched accordingly–light puple and a sort of jade hue. It was way pretty. The bed was a wrought iron sleigh bed and I finally got oak “big girl” furniture (much of this I still have in my parents’ new house).

Comment by Camels & Chocolate on August 29, 2008
  14. We lived in a cabin type house so I had wood on my walls. But my rug was dark blue and I had a white bunk bed. I loved that room.

  16. Children of the Cornhole for the win!

And my room – the one I had redecorated when I was 13 – was the size of a shoebox, had black walls with pink trim, tons of crap on the floor AND I wrote pretensious quotes on the walls with silver marker. (slaps self in head.)

  21. Bridge on the River KY definitely gets my vote. But Big Trouble in Little Vagina is a very close second.

My room was one of those with the all white walls and wooden furniture. One wall was a huge blanket of my favorite college football team, and the rest were covered in sports memorabilia. With the exception of one Michael J. Fox poster…I can still see that poster in my head. My room always looked like some messy teenage boy lived in it. But all my friends who hung out there were messy teenage boys so I guess that was appropriate.

Not sure how I feel about 90210 coming back. I spent the entire run of that show listening to people say I look like Tori Spelling…and even signing some autographs. lol

Comment by AJ on August 29, 2008
  22. Oceans Eleven Inches!

my room had totally old fashioned wall paper on it, a tall white bookshelf, a tan laminate chest of drawings, single bed, and I put crap – everything you can think of on the walls. Mostly torn out of magazines. I had a fake cherry tree in there. I raided my grandparents attic and grabbed a bunch of old whiskey, mineral water, and wine plaques (the kind you’d see in a bar) and put those up. I drew purple stars all over the ceiling. The photos were cute boys, horses horses horses, new-wavey stuff from fashion magazines. It was pretty crazy. I loved it.

On another note. I DO NOT THINK TORI SPELLING IS ATTRACTIVE AT ALL. Never have, never will. I Do Not Understand Her Appeal.
Jenny Garth tho is really cute, alwyas has been. Love her!

My room growing up was lovely a mix of lovely wood paneling and walls covered with shelves of books.

I had navy blue velvet curtains and a dark green comforter. Tres chic.

But my favorite was the framed posters I had on the wall of John Wayne and Elvis.
