July 16 08

i hate manicures and pedicures.

seriously.

the entire experience. having someone massaging your hands and (ew) feet. that cheese grater tool they use…what the fuck IS that thing anyway? having to choose your colors without any guidance…there’s a friggin’ wall of choices, how am i supposed to pick one? from the non-english speaking…it’s straight out of that episode of Seinfeld…”The Korean women were talking about me. I think they were calling me a dog.” (hahaha) the sitting around and waiting.

the entire experience just skeeves me out. but, there are times when these things must be done. weddings. trips to St. Lucia. trips to San Francisco for blogher (especially when you are the only person showing up with a lovely head of roots and no new shoes)

so, i made a 4:45 appointment yesterday. i was going to pop a xanax and beautify my extremities. (being a woman seriously sucks sometimes)

i walked in. didn’t understand a word they said. finally figured out i need to go choose my colors. you can do this ali. finally picked one. it’s awesome. it’s called “met on the internet” (the irony? kills me…since i’m about to travel to San Fransisco to meet a whole bunch of amazing people that i met on the internet. i’m not linking. there are too many. but you know who you are.)

and then i sat. and sat. and sat some more.

finally, at 5:15 (keep in mind my appointment was 4:45. that’s half an hour) some dude calls me over and says

“manicure?”

“yes. and pedicure too.”

“manicure?”

“yes.”

“manicure?”

and then all 50 people in there start flipping out and yelling at each other in an asian language? japanese? korean? hell, if i know. i was scared.

“oh, no, not you. you next. this woman first”

“but my appointment was 4:45″

“manicure?”

“yes. and pedicure”

“manicure?”

“yes, do you know when i will actually be seen?”

“um..manicure?”

and that was when i walked out of the store. said gofuckoffee and left.

if there’s one thing i dislike more than manicures…it’s having to be kept waiting. yes, i understand that my OB is going to be late sometimes…because he does something like DELIVER BABIES. and i understand my friends are going to be late sometimes because they are my friends (all my friends are late)

but i am paying someone for a service. i called and made an appointment. i asked to come in at 4:30 and he said 4:45. agreed. i should not be seen any later than 4:55.

so, i’ve sworn off Infinity Nails forever. and i went home and hauled out a gift i once got that i was 100% certain i would never use and went to town…

it may not be the BEST pedicure in the world. and it may not be the color i wanted. but at least i didn’t have to wait for it. and there was no CHEESE GRATER involved. or any Korean. also, hello, FREE!

and now all i have to do is pack for this trip…

help me. i’ve since added another dress, pair of shoes, and little sweater.

and a light jacket…because everyone said i need one.

2 dresses. 2 cardigans.
4 skirts. 5 pairs of shoes.
2 pairs yoga pants. 2 t-shirts. 3 camis. one hoodie
2 pairs of jeans. one pair of pants.
8 shirts. 1 jacket.

too much for 3 days in SF???

  1. I would say that’s just right for 3 days. I always overpack because I hate being away from home with nothing to wear. I hope you have so much fun!

And yes – way to much clothes for 3 days – but thats how I roll too!!

  3. Don’t look at me; I’m the guy whose rule for packing is (n+1) t-shirts, gitch, and socks, plus a pair of shorts, where n is the number of days staying.

I have to pack for a week so I’m a little scared. Procrastinating, big-time.

  6. You don’t love the cheese grater? I – not joking – love it so much I bought one for myself.

Although, I have to admit that one time I got a bit overzealous right before bed… and woke up with a bit of *pink* in the sheets. At my feet.

Am I grossing you out yet? Ok then.

Love the toes, am absolutely jealous of the fabulous clothes (and trip).

Can’t wait to hear about all the cheesecake you eat!!

  7. I got my first pedi over the weekend and…yeah. There was a reason I don’t let people touch my feet. Lets just say she caused pain and drew blood. B*tch.

I think you should send all those clothes in a box to me so I can, you know, help you choose outfits. Its only fair I get to try them all on too…..(what i’m trying to say is I LOVE YOUR WARDROBE)

  13. Man, You crack me up!

I haven’t gotten a pedi in years becuase the last time I got one I got an infection. Had to go to the Dr. and he said he sees that infection more than he would like too…Thankfully it went away with antibiotics!

Good for you for leaving..I would have left too!

  14. Awww, poor you!

I get a manicure/nail job at the same place my mother-in-law does (here in the SF Bay Area by the way), and they do pretty well. Usually I do fine with things like this because I and too inept to do things like this myself. Except for detail work on the nail paint.

The infection thing, for Ruby up above me, is VERY common EVERYWHERE. Of course, for a LOT of people they know I’ve out their own personal set of tools. That way only ONE person’s feet touch the tools.

And I was going to get a mani/pedi yesterday, too! But I was feeling icky so I used my own cheese grater and nail file and polish and did my own feet and hands. They look pretty professional if I do say so myself.

    See you tomorrow I hope!

  22. Ooh. Yes. I would have left too.

And – just the right amount of clothes. I think the most important thing when you’re packing to go away is to pack so you have options. If you only pack exactly what you know you’ll need, you’re SOL if the weather changes or you feel like wearing something different. If you pack more, and you do it sensibly, you have options!

    I like options. ;)

Almost as much as I hate when they speak in another language and I wonder if they can see my underwear, if my toe nails are weird, are they making fun of my hair?

  30. You may NEED a few more items and probably should take an additional suitcase. Think how much was packed for the “three hour tour” and THANK GOD because that turned into a bit longer then expected. Not that I think BlogHer will hold you hostage and you will be there for years involved in a crazy TV (maybe reality show) where you are trying to escape while decorating island huts and putting on shows on bamboo stages, but I am just sayin’ it can’t hurt to be prepared.

Oh, and someday I need to write about my second pedicure experience (I am a low maintenance girl too) and how the lady was being fired in a foreign language DURING my pedicure and that she was mad and… hmmmm, I think I will work on that and save some of the details for my blog since it appears I have hijacked yours.

I think it is because I am so jealous of the trip and wish I was meeting you there.

I quickly picked a color and I hated it. It’s the same exact color as my feet. Wonderful.

And if you don’t get a manicure? While they’re giving you a pedicure they’ll say: Are you SURE you don’t want nails done, too?
