January 14 08

the nanny is too soft. and the husband is too laid back about this whole toilet training thing. they wait for her to ask for the bathroom…which works sometimes…but, people, she’s TWO. she needs to be reminded. she needs to be picked up while she’s playing. she needs to be supervised.

gone are the days when we can plunk the child in front of Dora or in front of her new favorite toy for hours.

So, enter MEAN MOMMY and her TOILET TRAINING BOOT CAMP. i spent the entire weekend at HOME with Isabella, reminding her, coaxing her, bribing her…watching her like a hawk, getting her accustomed to this whole new world – the diaper-free zone.

i hated everything about this weekend. i hated having to stay inside for two whole days (and NO, i don’t count our 25 minute tim horton’s breakfast as actually going out). i hated having to take her to the bathroom every 20 minutes. i hated when she peed on my bed ON PURPOSE. i guess that’s what i get for taking 3 minutes to pee myself.

well, it’s not entirely true…i didn’t hate everything. I did get to watch my packers come back to win a great game after a depressing first four minutes

…even if we had to take 45 trips to the bathroom during it.

and we did have a GREAT time watching John & Kate plus 8 (possibly my new favorite show?)…i’m thinking i could maybe learn a toilet training thing from her

and playing this last night

with friends…even though the girls were embarrassingly bad. i’m fairly certain we were just getting the bad clues…and they were getting the easy ones..they were getting the likes of Sixteen Candles, Top Gun, and Dukes of Hazzard (where really all you have to do is pretend you are in a car and you are bound to guess either Dukes or Night Rider, right?) and we had clues like ‘Show Me the Money’ what? how on earth do you even TRY to get that one??

i found my boots! they have been hiding out at ilana’s since last winter.

apparently, i’ve been nominated for FOUR Canadian Blog Awards. Please vote for me! This year you can only vote ONCE per CATEGORY per round…so i’d love it if you could throw at least one my way…

i’m nominated in for Cheaper Than Therapy for:

Best Family Blog

  1. I love Jon and Kate Plus 8! They are so down to earth and funny together and their kids are GORGEOUS. I’ve watched them since their first special and was so excited when they got their own show.

  2. I voted.

And, the “chained to the house” stage of potty training sucks (as you know from two previous experiences), but it doesn’t last forever.

  3. I think Mommy bootcamp is a great plan. It might have been tough at first, but I’m sure she will come around. I can’t believe she pee’d in your bed!

  6. I voted for you in three catergories, but sadly, had to vote for myself in the fourth. >:)
I HAVE to get serious with The Baby about toilet training soon, but I am soooo lazy these days. It’s a good time of year to be housebound, I guess.

  7. I got nominated too! And not for family blog, which I find humourous. 🙂

    I’ll vote for you, baby!

  8. I will go vote for you, even though you like that awful show! LOL

It’s not the kids or the husband – I just think that the wife is a total wench and treats her husband like crap. I can’t imagine how stressful that many kids are, but I would like to think I wouldn’t turn into a psycho beast towards my only ally. 😉

  9. OMG, wasn’t that an AWESOME game?!

  10. Jon and Kate Plus 8 blows my mind. I can’t comprehend how they do it. SIX 3-year-olds? Good lord. Every time I watch it I am amazed.

  11. I am a HUGE fan of Jon and Kate Plus 8. I am one of nine kids myself, so I am always fascinated by how other households run with so many kids. I DVR every episode.

  12. I LOVE John and Kate plus 8! What a great show, it helps to put things in perspective, doesn’t it?

What is that doll house? It looks awesome!

Oh man, that feeling of being tied down is awful, but she’ll be a pro in no time, I’m sure! I guess consistency is key, right?!

  13. Yay you found the boots!! Potty training sucks!!!!

  14. I love, love, LOVE Jon and Kate Plus 8. If it makes you feel any better, she can’t get the boys potty trained. She said she thinks they will be going to kindergarten in diapers!

Comment by Megan on January 14, 2008
  15. My daughter was a breeze to potty train but my son..oy…we barely made it in time for Kindergarten!
Now it never fails, whenever we’re out shopping I seem to always get the “Mommy, I’ve really got to go” when of course we’re as far away from a washroom as possible or in one of those stores that only have staff washrooms that should never be seen by other humans!
Good luck and congrats on the nominations!!

  16. I’m sooo not looking forward to potty training. But I still have at least another 1.5 years to deal with diapers.

Comment by Kristie on January 14, 2008
  17. Like everyone else who has commented before me, I love Jon and Kate too… they are so real rather than sugary sweet make-believe. did I miss the new one tho?

Also, potty-training a kid sounds kind-of like training a dog only you can’t bribe them. Can’t say I’m looking forward to that part.

    GO PACKERS!

  18. I saw J and K plus 8 last night. I thought it was so HORRIBLE! She is a total bitch and treats her husband like crap. It’s a miracle he’s still with her! At one point, she slapped him in the leg and then hit him in the mouth. I would never hit my husband in the face.

I wasn’t amazed by her at all. I thought she was horrible! She micromanages her hubby for everything and she is a total bitch! She was getting 2 kids off the Dumbo ride and made a comment like “I’m so glad your dads here to help” Hello lady, he’s off helping with your 6 other kids! Argh!

Ok. I’ll stop now. Sorry. hehe

  19. We love Jon and Kate at our house too. They have a home in our brand new TiVo (which I love beyond all reasonable amounts) and my 5yo daughter watches every episode ad nauseum.

But it’s better than endless Dora and Barney and Doodlebops!!

  22. If Buns and I were a TV couple, we’d be Jon and Kate. I am that grumpy.

I hate potty training. Think it’s too early to start on my 6 month old? NOT.

  23. 1. Get your NANNY to T/T Bella – I had my daycare do it LOL for M & J – T trained himself, smart kid LOL! (mostly in jest, this part). Good luck!
    2. I voted for ya.
    3. WHERE did you get that dollhouse? It is just the best – we have a FP My First Dollhouse but I would LURRRVE that one for M (and for me LOL).

  26. I feel your pain. We’ve finally reached a state where accidents during conscious hours are few, but naptime and nighttime are diaper dependent. No control.

  27. I’m going to have to start boot camp. Bee and I both need to buckle down and get ‘er done.
And I love Jon & Kate as well – they remind me of me and the huz.

  28. I’m getting up the nerve to potty train my 2.5 year old so I’ve been looking at a lot of blogs and websites! Just read another interesting one at http://askmeanmom.com Lots of good info.

  29. Has anyone read the article where psychologist John Rosemond writes that parents should gate their naked child in the bathroom, and then leave?? Does this strike anyone else as dangerous, and highly irresponsible advice? Has he never heard that kids drown in toilets, or can ingest poisons or scald themselves? Parents sometimes get distracted when the phone rings or the doorbell rings…too many bad things can hapen with a young child gated in the bathroom with no adult in sight! Here’s the article URL:

  31. Hmm that was weird, my comment obtained eaten. Anyway I wanted to say that it is nice to realize that someone else also mentioned this as I experienced trouble finding the exact same info elsewhere. This was the very first location that told me the answer. Many thanks.
